Book excerpt: Abstract: Precise theory predictions for scattering processes are an important input for the physics program at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva. Notably the complex collider signatures of an electroweak vector boson and many jets that originate in either light partons (light jets) or bottom quarks (b jets) are relevant for both measurements of Standard Model processes as well as searches for new physics. In this thesis, we present new next-to-leading order QCD predictions for two related high-multiplicity processes at the LHC $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. We show predictions for $Wb\bar{b}$ production in association with two and three light jets that we computed for the first time. In order to obtain the required one-loop amplitudes, we implement the numerical unitarity approach for massive particles in a new version of the BlackHat library. To this end, we devise and apply a new algorithm for the evaluation of D-dimensional unitarity cuts. It builds on a consistent embedding of external fermions states in dimensional regularization and reduces the computational complexity of our calculations. Furthermore, we present next-to-leading order QCD predictions for $V+n$-jet production in association with up to $n = 5$ light jets for $V = W^\pm$ and with up to $n = 4$ light jets for $V = Z$, which we extend to the higher center-of-mass energy of the Large Hadron Collider Run-II. For these processes we compare results obtained with fixed-order scales such as $\hat{H}_T^'/2$ with the MiNLO reweighting procedure

Book excerpt: It is known that the LHC has a considerable discovery potential because of its large centre-of-mass energy (vs =14 TeV) and the high design luminosity. In addition, the two experiments ATLAS and CMS perform precision measurements for numerous models in physics. The increasing experimental precision demands an even higher level of accuracy on the theoretical side. For a more precise prediction of outcomes, one has to consider the corrections obtained typically from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The calculation of these corrections in the high energy regime is described by perturbation theory. In the present study, multi-loop calculations in QCD, including in particular two-loop corrections for single top quark production, are considered. There are several phenomenological motivations to study single top quark production: Firstly, the process is sensitive to the electroweak Wtb-vertex; moreover, non-standard couplings can hint at physics beyond the Standard Model. Secondly, the t-channel cross section measurement provides information on the b-quark Parton Distribution Functions (PDF). Finally, single top quark production enables us to directly measure the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa(CKM) matrix element Vtb. The next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) calculation of the single top quark production has many building blocks. In this study, two blocks will be presented: one-loop corrections squared and two-loop corrections interfered with Born. Initially, the one-loop squared contribution at NNLO for single top quark production will be calculated. Before we begin with the calculation of the two-loop corrections to single top quark production, we calculate the QCD form factors of heavy quarks at NNLO, along with the axial vector coupling as a first independent check. A comparison with the relevant literature suggests that this approach is in line with generally accepted procedure. This consistency check provides a proof of the validity of our setup. In the next step, the two-loop corrections to single top quark production will be calculated. After reducing all occurring tensor integrals to scalar integrals, we apply the integration by parts method (IBP) to find the master integrals. This step is a major challenge compared to all similar calculations because of the number of variables in the problem (two Mandelstam variables s and t, the dimension d and the mass of the top quark mt as well as the mass of the W boson mw). Finally, the calculation of the three kinds of topologies – vertex corrections, double boxes and non-planar double boxes – in the two-loop contribution at NNLO calculation will be presented.

Book excerpt: Measurements from HERMES, SMC, and Jlab show a significant single-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive pion leptoproduction [gamma]*(q)p 2![pi]X when the proton is polarized normal to the photon-to-pion production plane. Hwang, Schmidt, and I [1] have shown that final-state interactions from gluon exchange between the outgoing quark and the target spectator system lead to such single-spin asymmetries at leading twist in perturbative QCD; i.e., the rescattering corrections are not power-law suppressed at large photon virtuality Q2 at fixed x{sub bj}. The existence of such single-spin asymmetries (the Sivers effect) requires a phase difference between two amplitudes coupling the proton target with J{sub p}{sup z} = ± 1/2 to the same final-state, the same amplitudes which are necessary to produce a nonzero proton anomalous magnetic moment. The single-spin asymmetry which arises from such final-state interactions is in addition to the Collins effect which measures the transversity distribution [delta]q(x, Q). The Sivers effect also leads to a leading-twist target single-spin asymmetry for jet production in electroproduction where the thrust axis is used to define the production plane. More generally, Hoyer, Marchal, Peigne, Sannino, and I [2] have shown that one cannot neglect the interactions which occur between the times of the currents in the current correlator even in light-cone gauge. For example, the final-state interactions lead to the Bjorken-scaling diffractive component [gamma]*p 2!pX of deep inelastic scattering. Since the gluons exchanged in the final state carry negligible k, the Pomeron structure function closely resembles that of the primary gluon. The diffractive scattering of the fast outgoing quarks on spectators in the target in turn causes shadowing in the DIS cross section. These effects highlight the unexpected importance of final- and initial-state interactions in QCD observables, they lead to leading-twist single-spin asymmetries, diffraction, and nuclear shadowing, phenomena not included in the light-front wavefunctions of the target computed in isolation. Alternatively, as discussed by Belitsky, Ji, and Yuan [3], one can augment the light-front wavefunctions by including the phases induced by initial and final state interactions. Such wave-functions correspond to solving the light-front bound state equation in an external field. Similar initial and final state interactions also lead to Sivers-type single-spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes and inclusive hadron reactions such as pp 1! [pi]X, and heavy quark production, processes which will be important to study in polarized proton experiments at RHIC.

Book excerpt: The primary goal of the Large Hadron Collider is to investigate the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking and the search for new physics at the energy scale of Tera electron Volt. For a successful analysis of the vast amount of data, precise predictions for the processes within the Standard Model of elementary particles and its possible extensions are crucial. One of the main tools in collider physics to make rigorous quantitative predictions is perturbation theory, an expansion of the hard scattering matrix elements in the coupling constants of the quantum fields. Traditionally, observables in perturbation theory are computed evaluating Feynman diagrams. While the available techniques for tree-level diagrams are very well developed and to a large extent automated, the inclusionof quantum corrections at one-loop order represents a severe bottleneck for processes with many particles in the final state: One the one hand, this is due to the very large number of Feynman diagrams for high multiplicity processes. On the other hand, the computation of an individual one-loop Feynman diagram on its own is a non-trivial task due to the complicated integration over the virtual degrees of freedom. In this book, alternative methods based on unitarity and integrand reduction to calculate one-loop amplitudes in massless Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are presented. The basic ingredient is to construct the entire one-loop integrand from products of on-shell tree-level amplitudes. With algebraic techniques at the integrand level the full one-loop amplitude can then be constructed. This approach circumvents the explicit evaluation of individual one-loop Feynman diagrams. The described algorithm is carefully investigated with respect to numerical accuracy and runtime performance. As a proof of concept for the new methods, the phenomenologically interesting process of four-jet production at the Large Hadron Collider is computed.

Book excerpt: We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). A significant non-zero $\sin2\phi$ single spin asymmetry was also observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton. The azimuthal modulations of single spin asymmetries have been measured over a wide kinematic range.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One unresolved question in hadronic physics is the origin of large transverse single-spin asymmetries, AN, observed in hadron production from high-energy polarized-proton collisions. Collinear perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) predicts that AN should scale with the quark mass, however, experiments have since reported large AN for inclusive hadron production. Recent measurements from RHIC experiments show examples of these asymmetries at forward angles in a kinematic region where pQCD cross-section calculations reasonably agree with measured cross-sections. Disentangling dynamical contributions to AN from hadro-production requires moving beyond inclusive measurements. One possibility is to investigate asymmetries in two-particle correlations due to Interference Fragmentation Functions (IFF) and the Sivers effect. In 2008, RHIC dedicated a portion of the run to transversely polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. STAR was equipped with a Foward Meson Spectrometer (FMS) and a Forward Time Projection Chamber (FTPC), overlapping in the pseudorapidity range of 2.5 eta & lt; 4. By analyzing neutral pions with the FMS correlated with charged particles from the FTPC, correlation asymmetries can be measured at kinematics where large inclusive asymmetries have been measured. Correlations are measured for pi^0's with 2 & lt; pT, pi^0 & lt; 5 GeV/c and associated charged particles in two ranges of transverse momentum: 1 & lt; pT, ch & lt; 2 GeV/c and 0.5 & lt; pT, ch & lt; 1 GeV/c. IFF and Sivers asymmetries manifest themselves through the correlation of two particles from the same jet. These events are selected through a cut on the pair radius, delta R. Gain non-uniformities and electronics failures have resulted in large holes in trigger acceptance and associated particle acceptance, respectively. This non-uniform acceptance allows the Sivers and IFF effects to mix and distort the raw asymmetries. Techniques are developed to measure this leak-through by means of unpolarized yields and event weighting. They result in small corrections to the asymmetries. IFF and Sivers asymmetries both for xF 0 and for xF & lt; 0 are reported for forward-angle pi^0-charged particle correlations from polarized-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. Asymmetries are shown corrected for full underlying-event and pileup backgrounds, as well as corrected only for pile-up contributions. It appears the asymmetries are less sensitive to delta R when corrected for the full underlying-event background. Unfortunately, statistics limitations preclude a firm conclusion.

Book excerpt: A fully differential calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of Z-boson pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and LHC is presented. This process is an important background for Higgs particle and new physics searches at hadron colliders. We find sizable corrections for cross sections and differential distributions, particularly at the LHC. Residual scale uncertainties are typically at the 10% level and can be further reduced by applying a veto against the emission of a second hard jet. Our results confirm that NLO corrections do not simply rescale LO predictions.
