Le contact sans cesse grandissant avec les populations des régions plus au sud a amené les Inuits à changer leurs habitudes de vie en adoptant, entre autres, un mode de vie plus sédentaire, des conditions de vie modernes et de nouvelles habitudes alimentaires. L'enquête menée par Santé Québec en 1992 révélait que ces changements avaient aussi leurs effets sur l'état de santé de cette population. Dix ans plus tard, la Régie régionale de la santé et des services sociaux du Nunavik (RRSSSN) jugea nécessaire d'organiser une nouvelle enquête sur son territoire en vue de suivre l?évolution de l'état de santé et de bien-être de sa population. Dix-sept fascicules thématiques, un rapport sur la nutrition ainsi qu'un rapport méthodologique ont été produits dans le cadre de l'enquête grâce à la collaboration de différents professionnels du réseau de la santé et du milieu universitaire. Les informations recueillies permettent de dresser, à un moment précis, l'état de santé et de bien-être des Inuits du Nunavik, en plus de fournir des données sur divers déterminants de la santé. Ce document présente les principaux résultats de l'Enquête de santé auprès des Inuits du Nunavik menée en 2004 par l'Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) à bord de l'Amundsen, navire de la Garde côtière canadienne.

Book excerpt: The Nunavik Inuit Women's Manifesto (2006) states that, "Child sexual abuse is absolutely intolerable and must end. All types of violence? against women and children must cease to occur." Sexual violence has been denounced by Inuit communities and by many other communities, given that significant mental health and physical health problems are related to exposure to sexual abuse that occurs while growing up and during adulthood (Briere & Elliott, 1993, 1994; Campbell & Soeken, 1999; Coker et al., 2002; Curtis et al., 2002; Golding, 1999; Koss et al., 1991; Wright et al., 2004). Victims of all ages may also develop a negative self-image, feelings of lack of control because they were unable to protect themselves from the abuse, and a negative image of the world ? perceiving others as potential threats instead of possible protectors (Macmillan, 2001). Violence is thus a great burden on individual victims and their families. Moreover, studies also demonstrate the potential significant consequences of violence on secondary victims (neighbours, co-workers and friends), which have important repercussions on society as a whole (Ruback & Thompson, 2001). A report by the Pauktuutit Inuit Women's Association in 2003 emphasized the lack of awareness of child sexual abuse in Inuit communities and a lack of resources adapted to the Inuit (Kuptana, 1991; Pauktuutit, 2003). Despite these concerns, virtually no study has been conducted to determine the rate and nature of sexual abuse in Canadian Inuit communities.

Book excerpt: "Following the onset of intensive colonial intervention and rapid social change in the lives of the Inuit of Nunavik since the 1950's, rates of mental health problems such as suicide have been very high, particularly among youth. Inuit cite a broad range of social influences on mental wellness based on their lived experience, but epidemiological studies have focused on individual-level psychological and behavioural risk factors and negative outcomes. This study aimed to broadly assess of the social determinants of mental health among Inuit youth in Nunavik. Using data from the 2004 Nunavik Inuit Health Survey, associations between self-esteem, suicidal ideation, and a range of locally meaningful risk and protective factors at the individual, household, and community levels were estimated among Inuit youth. Estimation procedures involved multilevel linear and logistic regression modeling with multiple imputation. Early guidance was sought from key informants and results were interpreted in collaboration with community representatives in Nunavik. Epidemiologically speaking, novel findings include the protective effects of cultural pride, of traditional activities, and of community social capital; and harmful effects of barriers to participating in traditional activities, of household crowding, and of community rates of violence. These findings confirm Inuit perspectives, expand the scope of epidemiological analysis of Inuit mental health, and reinforce the need for locally informed, community-wide approaches to mental health promotion for Inuit youth." --
