Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rare indeed for one book to be both a first-rate classroom text and a major contribution to scholarship. The Pathway for Oxygen is such a book, offering a new approach to respiratory physiology and morphology that quantitatively links the two. Professionalism in science has led to a compartmentalization of biology. Function is the domain of the physiologist, structure that of the morphologist, and they often operate with vastly disparate concepts and procedures. Yet the performance of the respiratory system depends both on structural and on functional properties that cannot be separated. The first chapter of The Pathway for Oxygen engages the student with the design and function of the vertebrate respiratory organs from a comparative viewpoint. The second chapter adds to that foundation the link between cell energetics and oxygen needs of the whole animal. With Chapter 3 the excitement begins--new ideas, fresh attacks on old problems, and a fuller account of the power of the quantitative approach Dr. Weibel has pioneered. The Pathway for Oxygen will be read eagerly by medical students, graduate students, advanced undergraduates in zoology--and by their professors.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of FORTE 2008, 28th IFIP WG6.1 - ternational Conference on Formal Techniques for Networked and Distributed Systems. FORTE 2008 was held at the Campus Innovation Center in Tokyo, Japan during June 10–13, 2008. FORTE denotes a series of international wo- ing conferences on formal description techniques applied to computer networks and distributed systems. The conference series started in 1981 under the name PSTV. In 1988 a second series under the name FORTE was set up. Both - ries were united to FORTE/PSTV in 1996. In 2001 the conference changed the name to its current form. Recent conferences of this long series were held in Berlin (2003), Madrid(2004), Taipei(2005), Paris(2006), and Tallinn(2007). As in the previous year, FORTE 2008 was collocated with TESTCOM/ FATES 2008: the 20th IFIP International Conference on Testing of Com- nicating Systems (TESTCOM) and the 8th International Workshop on Formal Approaches to Testing of Software (FATES). The co-location of FORTE and TESTCOM/FATES fostered the collaboration between their communities. The commonspiritofboth conferenceswasunderpinnedby jointopening andclosing sessions, invited talks, as well as joint social events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical fibre communication is fast extending the boundaries of research laboratories and attaining the threshold of real-life applicability. The book attempts to provide a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of optical fibre communication. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with a discussion of planar dielectric waveguide and proceeds to discuss optical fibre and the propagation of light through it. It also covers Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifier (EDFA), semiconductor optical sources and detectors, fibre optic communication systems, and fibre optic measurements. In the Second Edition, lucid presentation of the text has been maintained without compromising on the comprehension of the subject. Two new chapters on “advanced modulation formats for fibre optic communication systems” and “surface plasmon polaritons and photonic crystals” have been included which discuss topics such as fibre optic coupler, coherent optical communication, BER performance of coherent optical communication systems, differential phase modulation schemes with direct detection, surface plasmon polariton and photonic crystal. Besides, a number of chapters have been significantly revised. This book is primarily intended as a text for undergraduate students of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Telecommunication Engineering. The book would also prove to be of immense benefit to postgraduate students of Physics and those preparing for AMIE and AMIETE exams. Key features • Lucid discussion of concepts, ensuring easy comprehensibility of even advanced topics to undergraduate students. • Numerical problems forming an integral part of the book, making it application-oriented. • Solutions to chapter-end numerical problems provided at the end of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The powers of seeing, hearing, re membering, distinguishing, judging, reason ing, are speculative powers; the power of ex ecuting any work of art or labour is active power. Thomas Reid I Some causal efficacy is due to persons. And, some of the causal efficacy due to persons is imparted by, not merely to, them. Further, some of the causal efficacy due to persons and imparted by them is imparted by and not merely to their physical, active bodies. Otherwise there is no agency. I will assume, with everyone at the outset, that the world contains agency of the kind found in some of a person's comings and goings, movings and changing of things. Agency is exhibited in more and in less sophisticated forms, that is, in any sophisticated, artful activity and in less complex, non-articulate physical activities. In both there appears to be more than mere causal efficacy imparted to the environment by a person. In sophisticated agen cy activities are organized, guided, purposive and purposeful comings and goings, movings and changes. And purpose is not absent in less soph isticated purposive activities of active creatures. So I shall argue in what follows. Now is the time for introducing the themes, topics, and issues to be considered, and the plan and purpose in them.

This unique book on statistical physics offers an advanced approach with numerous applications to the modern problems students are confronted with. Therefore the text contains more concepts and methods in statistics than the student would need for statistical mechanics alone. Methods from mathematical statistics and stochastics for the analysis of data are discussed as well. The book is divided into two parts, focusing first on the modeling of statistical systems and then on the analysis of these systems. Problems with hints for solution help the students to deepen their knowledge. The third edition has been updated and enlarged with new sections deepening the knowledge about data analysis. Moreover, a customized set of problems with solutions is accessible on the Web at extras.springer.com.

The content will be valid as well for those interested in linguistic, philosophy and many other areas of research both in humane and technical branches of science as logic permeates all genuine realms of science. The book contains a substantial part of classical results in logic like those by Gödel, Tarski, Church and Rosser as well as later developments like many-valued logics, logics for knowledge engineering, first-order logics plus inductive definitions. The exposition is rigorous yet without unnecessary abstractionism, so it should be accessible to readers from many disciplines of science. Each chapter contains a problem section, and problems are borrowed from research publications which allows for passing additional information, and it allows readers to test their skills. Extensive bibliography of 270 positions directs readers to research works of importance.

It presents a wide-ranging overview of some of the most active areas of contemporary research in arithmetic algebraic geometry, with special emphasis on the geometric applications of the p-adic analytic techniques originating in Dwork's work, their connection to various recent cohomology theories and to modular forms. The two volumes contain both important new research and illuminating survey articles written by leading experts in the field. The book will provide an indispensable resource for all those wishing to approach the frontiers of research in arithmetic algebraic geometry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics of strongly interacting many-body systems known as nuclear physics is a mature discipline which has achieved a remarkably quantitative success. It has explained with an impressive accuracy the properties of nuclei from the deuteron to heavy nuclei containing several hundreds of nucleons. This is the more remarkable when one realizes that in no way did the success depend on the existence of, or knowledge derived from, the fundamental theory of strong interactions now believed to be quantum chromodynamics (QCD).This monograph is a first, albeit embryonic, attempt to explain how a nucleus can be understood without invoking the explicit degrees of freedom of quarks and gluons while still staying within the basic premise of QCD and furthermore why do quark-gluon signatures not show up prominently in nuclear processes, including those processes involving short-distance encounters within nuclei. Such an understanding is largely based on the modern concepts of broken chiral symmetry and is believed to be essential in uncovering new physics expected to figure in the hadronic environment under extreme conditions of high temperature and/or high density.
