Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original, high-caliber thriller, in which Chile’s main port is the ashen witness to lives lost before succumbing once again to the flames. Perhaps this time for good. Pyromancy, the new novel by Gonzalo López Pardo Valparaíso always burns. There has been much speculation about the intentionality of those disasters, without pointing the finger at anyone in particular, although arsonists and drug traffickers are named; so far their presence is a ghostly one. In Piromancy, López Pardo delves into the nooks and crannies of that story and, despite the fear, points to the culprits, believe it or not. López Pardo’s writing presents new airs within genre literature, with a special interest in unraveling forgotten stories and the magic of the end of the world. His references include Borges, Rulfo and Coloane. He also declares his admiration for the anime genius Hayao Miyazaki.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Warburg Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities for an outstanding work of literary history This is a study of the representation of witches in early modern English drama, organised around the themes of scepticism and belief. It covers the entire early modern period, including the Restoration, and pays particular attention to three plays in which witchcraft is central: The Witch of Edmonton (1621), The Late Lancashire Witches (1634) and The Lancashire Witches (1681). Always a controversial issue, witchcraft has traditionally been seen in terms of a debate between ‘sceptics’ and ‘believers’. This book argues instead that, while the concepts of scepticism and belief are central to an understanding of early modern witchcraft, they are more fruitfully understood not as static and mutually exclusive positions within the witchcraft debate, but as rhetorical tools used by both sides.

Book excerpt: These papers reflect the long and distinguished career of Professor Jane Roberts in the field of medieval English studies, and especially her pioneering work on A Thesaurus of Old English, which provides novel source material for several of the contributions to the volume. Many of the papers deal with aspects of early lexicology and lexicography, while others focus on linguistic and literary features of Old and Middle English texts and their interpretation. They will thus be of interest to researchers in many areas of early English. A special introductory article describes the interlinked development of A Thesaurus of Old English, The Historical Thesaurus of English, and the proposed Thesaurus of Middle English. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In medieval England, women in labor wrapped birth girdles around their abdomens to protect themselves and their unborn children. These parchment or paper rolls replicated the "girdle relics" of the Virgin Mary and other saints loaned to queens and noblewomen, extending childbirth protection to women of all classes. This book examines the texts and images of nine English birth girdles produced between the reigns of Richard II and Henry VIII. Cultural artifacts of lay devotion within the birthing chamber, the birth girdles offered the solace and promise of faith to the parturient woman and her attendants amid religious dissent, political upheaval, recurring epidemics, and the onset of print.
