Svůj nejlepší román Pýcha a předsudek (Pride and Prejudice) se pokoušela vydat už v roce 1797 pod názvem První dojmy (First Impressions).

Book excerpt: Elizabeth Bennet is Austen’s most liberated and unambiguously appealing heroine, and Pride and Prejudice has remained over most of the past two centuries Austen’s most popular novel. The story turns on the marriage prospects of the five daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet: Elizabeth forms a prejudice against the proud and distant Mr. Darcy; Darcy’s charming friend Charles Bingley falls in love with her sister Jane; and the handsome officer George Wickham forms attachments successively to Elizabeth and to her sister Lydia. Irvine’s extensive introduction sets the novel in the context of the literary and intellectual history of the period, and deals with such crucial background issues as early-nineteenth century class relations in Britain, and female exclusion from property and power. The appendices present an unrivaled selection of background contextual documents.

Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read Few have failed to be charmed by the witty and independent spirit of Elizabeth Bennet in Austen's beloved classic Pride and Prejudice. When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows us the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life. Book excerpt: The five Bennet sisters will be left without a home or income when their father dies, and their mother is very anxious to get them well married, eyeing up any single man with that in mind. Of the sisters, Jane is the most beautiful and good-natured, Elizabeth is witty and spirited, Mary is plain, Kitty silly and Lydia, barely sixteen, is wild, sexually precocious and self-willed. Their parents are ill-matched, Mrs Bennet being embarrassingly foolish, and Mr Bennet sardonic, shutting himself in his study and fond only of his two eldest daughters. Two rich young men come into the neighbourhood, Mr Bingley, who appears to fall in love with Jane, and his haughty friend Mr Darcy, who first scorns but then finds himself drawn to Elizabeth. Elizabeth has taken against him, however, a prejudice confirmed when a new friend, George Wickham, spreads stories about Darcy's double dealing. Elizabeth now receives an unwelcome proposal from her pompous cousin, Mr Collins, and is horrified when three days later he is accepted by her unromantic friend, Charlotte Lucas, who fears being left an 'old maid'. Darcy and Bingley leave the neighbourhood, leaving an unhappy Jane behind them, and Elizabeth feels her faith in human nature undermined.

Book excerpt: The narrative, which Austen initially titled "First Impressions," describes the clash between Elizabeth Bennet, the daughter of a country gentleman, and Fitzwilliam Darcy, a rich and aristocratic landowner. Although Austen shows them intrigued by each other, she reverses the convention of first impressions: "pride" of rank and fortune and "prejudice" against Elizabeth's inferiority of family hold Darcy aloof, while Elizabeth is equally fired both by the pride of self-respect and by prejudice against Darcy's snobbery. Ultimately, they come together in love and self-understanding.
