Download or read book Spot the Difference Puzzles for Language Learning Fun written by David DeRocco and published by Full Blast Productions. This book was released on 1997 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spot the differences puzzles are the ones where you are given nearly identical drawings and you must spot the eight differences. This book consists of 50 spot the differences puzzles. But it is more than just a puzzle book. Each of the 50 drawings is on a subject that students must know about: things like giving directions, taking a driver's test, going to see a doctor, going to a job interview or asking a question in class. Each unit is a self-contained lesson on one of these subjects. To begin with each unit is four pages long. Students are first given a single, error free copy of the drawing, with which they identify objects in the drawing and brainstorm vocabulary. Next your students read a paragraph which tells the story of the drawing. Now your students come up with a title for the unit. Page two has the two copies of the drawing, with and without missing items, and space to write down what they are. Following this are a variety of vocabulary exercises and word puzzles. There is a close dictation and each unit provides a couple of personal interpretation questions, as well. There is a complete answer key.

Book Synopsis Restoring Students' Innate Power by : Louise El Yaafouri
Download or read book Restoring Students' Innate Power written by Louise El Yaafouri and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the effects of trauma on newcomer students and presents stress-mitigating strategies that empower these multilingual students as they transition to a new environment. Diverse insights and experiences bring high-powered learning spaces to life. However, the cultural backgrounds of newcomer students and their families can be very different from the dominant norms of the new community, resulting in misalignments that constitute a persistent challenge. In addition, the process of arriving can exacerbate stress. Entering a new school or classroom means situating oneself within a new context of language, culture, community, and shifting personal identities. This transition shock contributes to a sense of diminished power. In serving these students, we can't afford to leave transition shock out of our conversations about trauma. We must not only stitch together pieces of culturally responsive practice and trauma-informed care but also become practitioners of stress-mitigating strategies that empower newcomer students. We must focus instruction on our students' unique identities. We must restore their power. In Restoring Students' Innate Power, newcomer educator and cultural competency expert Louise El Yaafouri presents * An understanding of transition shock and how stress and trauma affect recent arrivers. * The four pillars of transition shock and how they affect learning. * How students see themselves and how the cultural aspects of their identities inform teachers' work in mitigating transition shock. * How social-emotional learning links to trauma-informed practice. This book isn't exclusively about trauma; it's about restoring power. The distinction is critical. Focusing on the trauma or traumatic event roots us in the past. Restoration of power moves us forward.
Book Synopsis The Power of Change by : Patrick Middleton, Ph.D.
Download or read book The Power of Change written by Patrick Middleton, Ph.D. and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Power of Change, Patrick Middleton shows with clear and convincing evidence that the antidote to self destructive behavior is discovering and cultivating self awareness, which leads to self understanding, ego control and the gradual end to impulsive decision-making. To help readers better understand the concept of self awareness, he provides simple, but profound insight into the workings of the "unaware" mind, drawing on personal experiences and vignettes collected over his 49 years of incarceration. A refreshing aspect of The Power of Change is Middleton's ability to empower and inspire the reader without placating, sugar coating or using psychological jargon that only a therapist would understand. With both humility and optimism, he readily acknowledges that life ⎯ especially life in prison ⎯ is difficult, demanding and often an uphill challenge. And he does so neither in a condescending nor self aggrandizing manner. Nor does he claim the suggestions in his book will make all problems go away, but, he writes, "once you become aware that you are aware, you will have the confidence to know that the power of change is in your hands." Each of the book's 28 chapters presents a different life situation that is designed to connect readers to practical ways to discover and cultivate self awareness, and to learn to Be in the present. Chapter titles reflect the wealth of wisdom and practicality of this well-written book; for example, "Be Honest with Yourself," "Become Aware of What You're Thinking," "Resolve Your Bitterness," "Here's What You Have to Feel if You're Truly Sorry," "Discover the Present and Be in It," "Raise Your Self Standards," "Practice Empathy," "Develop a Support Team," "Acknowledge Your Success," "Live Every Day With a Purpose." Included in each chapter are carefully crafted exercises for incorporating the chapter lessons into one's everyday life. The Power of Change is a must-read for every prisoner who desires the mental tools and knowledge to bring about responsible, lasting change in their lives. An inspiration, this book is a gift to humankind, easily read and one that will be dog-eared, underlined, and revisited by readers time and again. Every friend and family member of an incarcerated person will want their loved one to have this book. About the Author: Patrick Middleton has been incarcerated in Pennsylvania since 1975. From 1978 to 1990, he was a full-time student in the University of Pittsburgh's in-house college program at Western Penitentiary on the North Side of Pittsburgh, achieving scholarship status throughout his 12 year student tenure. In 1990, he earned his Ph.D. in Instruction and Learning, becoming the first and only prisoner in America to earn a Ph.D. in a classroom setting. He has taught undergraduate and graduate students in both the University of Pittsburgh and Villanova University's in-house prison college programs. He is the author of two instructor's manuals in psychology; a memoir, Incorrigible; and a literary novel, Eureka Man.

Book Synopsis Language and Power in Post-Colonial Schooling by : Carolyn McKinney
Download or read book Language and Power in Post-Colonial Schooling written by Carolyn McKinney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critiquing the positioning of children from non-dominant groups as linguistically deficient, this book aims to bridge the gap between theorizing of language in critical sociolinguistics and approaches to language in education. Carolyn McKinney uses the lens of linguistic ideologies—teachers’ and students’ beliefs about language—to shed light on the continuing problem of reproduction of linguistic inequality. Framed within global debates in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, she examines the case of historically white schools in South Africa, a post-colonial context where political power has shifted but where the power of whiteness continues, to provide new insights into the complex relationships between language and power, and language and subjectivity. Implications for language curricula and policy in contexts of linguistic diversity are foregrounded. Providing an accessible overview of the scholarly literature on language ideologies and language as social practice and resource in multilingual contexts, Language and Power in Post-Colonial Schooling uses the conceptual tools it presents to analyze classroom interaction and ethnographic observations from the day-to-day life in case study schools and explores implications of both the research literature and the analyses of students’ and teachers’ discourses and practices for language in education policy and curriculum.
