This thrilling adventure from bestselling 'Horrible Histories' author Terry Deary brings the Blitz to life. It's 1940 and war is underway. In Sheffield, England, a brother and sister set out to solve a mystery, brazenly believing that the air-raid signals are only false alarms. In Dachau, Germany, two boys come up with a bold plan to bring an end to the war and help a Polish prisoner escape. But when the bombs falling on Sheffield become a reality, and the German boys' plan hurls them unwittingly into the midst of the action, the children's adventures swiftly become a terrifying fight to survive. ____________________ 'Bubbling with wit, language play and robust dialogue....just the right mix of ingredients to trigger young readers' interest in all things historical.' Book excerpt: Civil Defence was a grouping of civilian emergency services that included the National Fire Service, the police and a whole range of support services that were part of Air Raid Precautions (more commonly referred to as the ARP). Collectively they played a vital role in providing a controlled response to the effects of German bombing raids on British cities. The ARP was managed by report and control staff, incident officers and messenger services. Casualties were dealt with by the Medical Officer of Health staff via casualty clearing zones and depots. The ARP services that were actually on the front line down among the exploding bombs and collapsing buildings included the wardens, rescue services, first aid and stretcher parties, gas identification and decontamination services, roof spotters, fire watchers and fire guards.

Her tentacles reach beyond her three wards and draw into their clutches her secretary, Sally Morgan, and the sardonically charming local doctor. Anthea's charms prove fatal to none but her. For, while people set their watches by the light in her bedroom window, Florence Pye reads death in the cards. Her prophecy comes true, silently, violently in the depths of the night. What Miss Pye has not foreseen, though, is that she will be first to find the body . . .

Book Synopsis The Complete A-Z of Dad's Army by : Richard Webber
Download or read book The Complete A-Z of Dad's Army written by Richard Webber and published by Orion Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The success of Dad's Army can be summed up in a line from the first episode when the bumptious Captain Mainwaring says: "The machine-guns could have a clear field of fire from here to Timothy White's ... if it wasn't for that woman in the telephone box."' The Independent Dad's Army is quite simply the most successful British TV sitcom of all time. 80 episodes were made and are constantly repeated. The first black-and-white series, re-shown for the first time in 1999, attracted 4.6m viewers outperforming Have I got News for You and very nearly outstripping Channel Four's most popular programme Friends. When the second series was shown on Saturday nights in 1998 it took 7 million viewers and 40% of the audience. This book will be the last word on the series. There have been other books, but this is first to present the whole story from how the series got made - scripts, locations, filming, the real history of the Home Guard, the background to the actors who played in the series, every episode catalogued and much more. The creators have volunteered to open their archives, which include the original programme research, annotated scripts and location photographs. Now recognised as one of the great shows of this and any TV era, Perry and Croft have decided the programme requires a monument and this book will be it.
