Download or read book Human Shields written by Dr. Neve Gordon and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chilling global history of the human shield phenomenon. From Syrian civilians locked in iron cages to veterans joining peaceful indigenous water protectors at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, from Sri Lanka to Iraq and from Yemen to the United States, human beings have been used as shields for protection, coercion, or deterrence. Over the past decade, human shields have also appeared with increasing frequency in antinuclear struggles, civil and environmental protests, and even computer games. The phenomenon, however, is by no means a new one. Describing the use of human shields in key historical and contemporary moments across the globe, Neve Gordon and Nicola Perugini demonstrate how the increasing weaponization of human beings has made the position of civilians trapped in theaters of violence more precarious and their lives more expendable. They show how the law facilitates the use of lethal violence against vulnerable people while portraying it as humane, but they also reveal how people can and do use their own vulnerability to resist violence and denounce forms of dehumanization. Ultimately, Human Shields unsettles our common ethical assumptions about violence and the law and urges us to imagine entirely new forms of humane politics.

In Georgia, police uncover a package they expect to contain drugs, but what they find baffles even the most seasoned investigators. McClellan is plunged onto a bizarre and twisted trail of international terrorism and murder as he tracks an ex-Russian military intelligence operative, turned freelance terrorist, on a path of almost certain pyrotechnic devastation of an unknown target. Complicating the investigation, McClellan is partnered with a female detective with whom his personal life begins to involve. Department politics and bureaucratic self-preservation threaten to derail his investigation just as McClellan closes in on his quarry in a heart-stopping game of cat-and-mouse, matching his analytical abilities and street-wise perceptions, with the Russian’s meticulous cunning and capability for staying one step ahead.

Book Synopsis Electromagnetic Shielding by : Salvatore Celozzi
Download or read book Electromagnetic Shielding written by Salvatore Celozzi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive Resource for Understanding Electromagnetic Shielding Concepts and Recent Developments in the Field This book describes the fundamental, theoretical, and practical aspects to approach electromagnetic shielding with a problem-solving mind, either at a design stage or in the context of an issue-fixing analysis of an existing configuration. It examines the main shielding mechanisms and how to analyze any shielding configuration, taking into account all the involved aspects. A detailed discussion on the possible choices of parameters suitable to ascertain the performance of a given shielding structure is also presented by considering either a continuous wave EM field source or a transient one. To aid in reader comprehension, both a theoretical and a practical engineering point of view are presented with several examples and applications included at the end of main chapters. Sample topics discussed in the book include: Concepts in transient shielding including performance parameters and canonical configurations Time domain performance of shielding structures, thin shields, and overall performance of shielding enclosures (cavities) How to install adequate barriers around the most sensitive components/systems to reduce or eliminate interference Details on solving core fundamental issues for electronic and telecommunications systems via electromagnetic shielding For industrial researchers, telecommunications/electrical engineers, and academics studying the design of EM shielding structures, this book serves as an important resource for understanding both the logistics and practical applications of electromagnetic shielding. It also includes all recent developments in the field to help professionals stay ahead of the curve in their respective disciplines.

Book Synopsis Van der Waals Forces and Shielding Effects by : Frans H.A. Rummens
Download or read book Van der Waals Forces and Shielding Effects written by Frans H.A. Rummens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usefulness of solvent effect studies on NMR chemical shifts need not be elabo rated here; many applications of solvent effects continue to be published in great profusion. Quite a few intermolecular phenomenae may contribute to solvent shifts, but there is always the ubiquitous Van der Waals effect ow. Contrary to such other effects as neighbour anisotropy 0a, reaction field contribution 0E or complexation effects 0e, no major direct use has yet been found for the Van der Waals effect. So far the role of the Van der Waals effect has been that of a nasty, disturbing phenom enon, something to be eliminated at all costs. But it is precisely in this latter respect where almost all solvent effect studies fall short. Not only is Ow usually large (larger than 0a and 0E even in 1 H NMR and probably the dominating term with heavier nuclei), but it is strongly variable from one solute to another and even from one nu clear site to another in the same solute molecule. No referencing technique, however cleverly devised, will be capable of eliminating the Ow contribution from the other, presumedly more interesting contributions. It appeared quite recently that mathematical trickery by the name of "factor analysis" could achieve the sought-for separation of contribuants.
