Book excerpt: John Brown's purpose for writing this preachers' gem is to help ministers gain some practical guidance and spiritual stimulus as fervent preachers, by going back with him into the past to visit with Puritan Preaching and Preachers. He surveys those preachers who have laid more stress upon Scripture than upon ecclesiastical institutions. Such men there were even before the days of that Protestantism out of which Puritanism came. He follows the Preaching Friars of the Middle Ages, and such men as John Wickliffe and John Colet, who made Protestantism possible, before reaching Puritanism proper. He also gives some examples of more recent preachers (just before his own day) of those that carried the Puritan persuasion of experimental preaching into their own generations.

Book excerpt: This book is taken from a series of lectures in the late nineteenth century at Yale University by English Congregational minister, John Brown. He gives a background by surveying the preaching of the friars and subsequently the preaching of the Reformation. He then delves into a lecture of the prominent preachers of the Puritan period and finally, preachers of the nineteenth century who are considered heirs to the Puritans. His closing remarks contain sage advice to young ministers of the gospel. This makes a fine gift for the divinity school graduate or any lover of religious history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Puritan Preaching in England: A Study of Past and Present At the beginning of the thirteenth century we come to one of the most interesting periods in the history of Latin Christianity, previous to the Reformation - the time of the rise of the Mendicant Orders of Preaching Friars, Dominican and Franciscan. Among the regular clergy actual preaching had fallen into disuse. In theory it had come to be regarded as the special privilege of the bishops, and there were but few of these who had either the gift, the inclination, or the leisure to preach even in the cathedral cities. In the rest of their dioceses their presence was but occasional; and then only in the shape of a progress or visitation of pomp and form rather than for any purpose of popular instruction. For the people the services of the Church took the form of ceremonial and the only general teaching was the ritual. Book excerpt: A fine introduction to Puritan preaching, this little book also recalls on of the great turning points I English Christianity-for these sermons were preached on 'the Farewell Sunday' in August, 1662, when two thousand ministers left the national Church for conscience' sake. Much has been written on the Great Ejection, but nothing is more important than to hear the ejected speak for themselves. Their watchword was: " I preach as never sure to preach again, and as a dying man to dying men.

Just as Moses asked the Lord on the summit of Sinai, we can approach God's Word with the ultimate request: "Show me Your glory." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, scholars have attempted to understand the powerful hold that the sermon had upon the imagination of New England Puritans. In this book Emory Elliott puts forth a complex and striking thesis: that Puritan religious literature provided the myths and metaphors that helped the people to express their deepest doubts and fears, feelings created by their particular cultural situation and aroused by the crucial social events of seventeenth-century America. In his early chapters, the author defines the psychological needs of the second- and third-generation Puritans, arguing that these needs arose from the generational conflict between the founders and their children and from the methods of child rearing and religious education employed in Puritan New England. In the later chapters, he reveals how the ministers responded to the crisis in their society by reshaping theology and constructing in their sermons a religious language that helped to fulfill the most urgent psychological needs of the people. Book excerpt: Before the outbreak of hostilities between Charles I and the Long Parliament, the King had authorized a regular monthly fast for the realm which members of parliament later adopted as a program of national humiliation. At the invitation of individual members of parliament, two preachers, generally leading puritan clerics connected with the Westminster Assembly, which had been convened for the purpose of reforming the Church of England, were invited to speak. Drawing from some 240 published sermons, Professor Wilson presents a survey of the program, giving detailed scrutiny to the form and contents of the sermons. His aim throughout is to clarify the puritans' conceptions of the relationship between their religious movement and the political events of the period, and to assess the importance of these sermons for the interpretation of Puritanism. Madden Master of Berkeley College and Jonathan Edwards Professor of American Christianity Yale University and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986-09-04 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the colonial era, New England's only real public spokesmen were the Congregational ministers. One result is that the ideological origins of the American Revolution are nowhere more clearly seen than in the sermons they preached. The New England Soul is the first comprehensive analysis of preaching in New England from the founding of the Puritan colonies to the outbreak of the Revolution. Using a multi-disciplinary approach--including analysis of rhetorical style and concept of identity and community--Stout examines more than two thousand sermons spanning five generations of ministers, including such giants of the pulpit as John Cotton, Thomas Shepard, Increase and Cotton Mather, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, Jonathan Mayhew, and Charles Chauncy. Equally important, however, are the manuscript sermons of many lesser known ministers, which never appeared in print. By integrating the sermons of ordinary ministers with the printed sermons of their more illustrious contemporaries, Stout reconstructs the full import of the colonial sermon as a multi-faceted institution that served both religious and political purposes, and explicated history and society to the New England Puritans for one and a half centuries.
