Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epitaxial indium tin oxide films have been grown on both LaAlO3 and yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates using RF magnetron sputtering. Electrolyte gating causes a large change in the film resistance that occurs immediately after the gate voltage is applied, and shows no hysteresis during the charging/discharging processes. When two devices are patterned next to one another and the first one gated through an electrolyte, the second one shows no changes in conductance, in contrast to what happens in materials (like tungsten oxide) susceptible to ionic electromigration and intercalation. These findings indicate that electrolyte gating in indium tin oxide triggers a pure electronic process (electron depletion or accumulation, depending on the polarity of the gate voltage), with no electrochemical reactions involved. Electron accumulation occurs in a very thin layer near the film surface, which becomes highly conductive. These results contribute to our understanding of the electrolyte gating mechanism in complex oxides and may be relevant for applications of electric double layer transistor devices.

Book excerpt: Badeker in 1907 observed that some materials are optically transparent in the visible light and electrically conducting [1]. Because of the increasing interest in electrically and electronically active materials, the search for materials and the techniques for producing semi-transparent electrically conducting films have gained much importance. In an intrinsic stoichiometric material, it is not possible to have simultaneously high transparency (>80%%) in the visible region and high electrical conductivity (>103 Ω cm-1). Book excerpt: Understanding interfacial charge injection processes is one of the key factors needed for development of efficient organic electronic devices, such as biosensors and energy conversion systems, since these processes control the electrical characteristics of these devices. Spectroelectrochemical characterization of electron transfer processes occurring at the electrode - electroactive thin film interface has been evaluated to improve our understanding of charge transfer kinetics using a novel form of electroreflectance spectroscopy, potential-modulated attenuated total reflectance (PM-ATR), which makes it possible to sensitively monitor spectroscopic changes in thin films as a function of applied potential. PM-ATR was used to evaluate three different redox-active films deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes to investigate: i) the orientation dependence of charge transfer rates of thin films of biomolecules, ii) surface treatment and modification effects on charge transfer kinetics of conducting polymers and, iii) estimation of rates of electron injection and conduction band edge of semiconductor nanocrystalline materials. First, Prussian blue film as a model system was used successfully to examine the PM-ATR technique for determination of the charge transfer rate constant between ITO and a molecular film. Second, an anisotropic and redox active protein film, cytochrome c, was used to probe charge transfer rates with respect to molecular orientation. The electron transfer rate measured using TM polarized light was four-fold greater than that measured using TE polarized light. These data are the first to correlate a distribution of molecular orientations with a distribution of electron transfer rates in a redox-active molecular film. Third, the effects of ITO surface treatment and modification on charge transfer kinetics on a conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene/)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS), were studied. The apparent interfacial charge transfer rate constant for PEDOT/PSS on ITO has been reported for the first time which cannot be measured otherwise with conventional electrochemistry due to high non-Faradaic background of PEDOT/PSS films. Fourth, PM-ATR enabled characterization of reversible redox processes between submonolayer coverages of surface-tethered, CdSe nanocrystals and ITO for the first time. Optically determined onset potentials for electron injection were used for estimation for the conduction band and valance band energies (ECB and EVB, respectively).

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled PREPARATION AND POST-ANNEALING EFFECTS ON THE OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF INDIUM TIN OXIDE THIN FILMS Submitted by WANG Rong Xin for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in April 2005 Many opto-electronic devices, such as III-V compound devices, liquid crystal displays, solar cells, organic and inorganic light emitting devices, and ultraviolet photodetectors, demand transparent electrode materials simultaneously having high electrical conductance. To meet the requirements for particular applications, a great deal of basic research and studies have been carried out on the electrical and optical properties of these materials. As a most promising candidate for such materials, indium tin oxide (ITO) has attracted interest in recent years. Furthermore, ITO has many unique properties such as excellent adhesion on the substrate, thermal stability and ease of patterning. The deposition of high-quality ITO thin films is a key step for successful application of ITO thin films as transparent electrode materials. To obtain optimal electrical and optical properties of ITO films, the growth parameters and conditions must be determined. Moreover, the optical and electrical properties of ITO contact layers, which can either be on the top side or the bottom side of a device, are influenced by various post-deposition treatments. For the present work, ITO thin films were deposited on glass and quartz substrates using e-beam evaporation with different deposition rates. The influence of substrate material, deposition rate, deposition gas environment and post-deposition annealing on the optical properties of the films was investigated in detail. Atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy was employed to obtain information on the chemical state and crystallization of the films. Analysis of these data suggests that the substrate material, deposition rate, deposition gas environment and post-deposition annealing conditions strongly affect the chemical composition and the microstructure of the ITO films and these in turn influence the optical properties of the film. Oxygen incorporation transfers the In O phase to the In O phase and removes metallic In to form both indium oxide 2 3-x 2 3 phases. Both of these reactions are beneficial for the optical transmittance of ITO thin films. Moreover, it was found that the incorporation and decomposition reactions of oxygen can be controlled so as to change the optical properties of the ITO thin films reversibly. Book Synopsis Improved Charge Transfer by Thin Metal Oxide Films by : Irfan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The field of electronics has an immense impact on our day to day life. Efficient charge transfer at the semiconductor and electrode interface is one of the most crucial issues for the performance of any electronic device. A lot of effort has been spent to address this issue. A counter intuitive phenomenon of insertion of a thin metal oxide film at the semiconductor and electrode interface has gained momentum recently. In the current thesis, based on results of several experiments, I will propose a prominent mechanism of performance improvement with such insertions. I will also demonstrate the applicability of such metal oxide thin films in many other systems. First, I will introduce the scope of the thesis in detail. I will also introduce the background to understand the electronic structure of organic semiconductors, along with the interface formation at the semiconductor/metal interface. Then, I will discuss the measurement techniques. I will start the discussion on results with the insertion of a thin layer of MoOx (a transition metal oxide) between indium tin oxide (ITO) and two well studied organic semiconductors. I will also demonstrate that the optimum insertion layer thickness is just a few nanometers. I will illustrate the importance of high vacuum during the deposition of such insertion layers. I will also discuss the method to recover work function of air exposed MoOx ilms. I will further demonstrate that a thin layer of MoOx can be utilized to dope C60 strongly p-type. Then, I will discuss the application of MoOx insertion layer in CdTe based solar cells. I will further show the application of MoOx and organic double-inter-layer in organic devices. At the end, I will discuss an intense oxygen plasma treatment on ITO films and demonstrate a method to achieve high work function ITO films. The mechanism of high work function and application in devices will also be explained in detail. Finally, I will summarize the thesis"--Page ix-x.
