Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Raman effect is a most useful tool for the study of molecular vibrations and molecular structure. Information about the structure and symmetry of molecules, as well as about their vibrational energies can be obtained to a reasonable degree of satisfaction from their infrared and Raman vibrational spectra. The body of knowl edqe of the vibrational infrared and Raman spectra of molecules is immense and is now so well organized and understood that it is found to be represented in any stan dard upper level undergraduate curriculum in chemistry. The rotational energies of a molecule and quantitative details about its structure can only be obtained through the techniques of microwave, and high-resolution infrared and Raman spectroscopy of low pressure gases and vapors. The results of such investigations are of interest . not only to the academic scientists, but also to scientists and engineers who are active in applied fields of chemistry and physics, as well as the atmospheric sciences. This book deals with basic investigations of the Raman scattering of light by gases, with some attention also being given to liquid substances. After a brief in troductory chapter that delineates the historical development of Raman spectroscopy of gases, high-resolution rotation-vibrational and pure rotational Raman spectros copy is described in Chapters 2 and 3. The all-important intensity parameter, the Raman scattering cross section, is treated in Chapter 4, while the broadening of Raman lines due to the effects of intermolecular forces is taken up in Chapter 5.

Book excerpt: This paper indicates that infrared and Raman rotational and fundamental vibrational-rotational spectra of dense systems (high pressure gases, liquids and solids) are essentially classical, in that they can be computed and understood from a basically classical mechanical viewpoint, with some caveats for features in which anharmonicity is important, such as the detailed shape of Q branches. It is demonstrated here, using the diatomic case as an example, that ordinary, i.e. nonresonant, Raman band contours can be computed from classical mechanics plus simple quantum corrections. Classical versions of molecular dynamics, linear response theory and ensemble averaging, followed by straightforward quantum corrections, are used to compute the pure rotational and fundamental vibrational-rotational Raman band contours of N2 for the gas phase and for solutions of N2 in different densities of gas phase Ar and in liquid Ar. The evolution is seen from multiple peaked line shapes characteristic of free rotation in the gas phase to single peaks characteristic of hindered rotation in the liquid phase. Comparison is made with quantum and correspondence principle classical gas phase spectral calculations and with experimental measurements for pure N2 and N2 in liquid Ar. Three advantages are pointed out for a classical approach to infrared and Raman spectra.

Book excerpt: ...Diatomic Molecules provides a systematic approach to quantitative analysis of molecular spectra of diatomic molecules, in particular infrared and Raman spectra. This analysis is used to extract precise information about not only molecular structure but also its associated electric and magnetic properties. This book is unique in its methodical treatment of the subject, and in the included collection of results and extensive bibliography. The first three chapters provide a thorough explanation of an empirical basis of infrared and Raman spectra, together with the theory behind techniques employed in their analysis. Succeeding chapters outline, among other topics, wave functions and matrix elements in relation to radial functions for potential energy, dipolar moment etc., and applications of lasers. Various methods are applied in analysis of frequency data and spectral intensities, and to effects of spin and intermolecular interaction. The many subjects are discussed in depth, with reviews of topics important in future progress of experiment and theory in molecular spectroscopy. Senior undergraduate and postgraduate students in chemistry and physics will find ..Diatomic Molecules a useful adjunct to their course texts, and it will prove invaluable to all researchers in spectroscopy.

Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: A high-resolution study of the rotational Raman spectra of cyclopropane and cyclopropane-d6 yielded the values 0.6696 = 0.0002 reciprocal cm and 0.4607 = 0.0001 reciprocal cm for their ground-state rotational constants. From these values the C-C internuclear distance was determined to be 1.514 = 0.002 A. (Author).
