Book excerpt: Whatever your interest may be, this month-by-month guide to the key natural events in Central and Eastern Ontario will let you know exactly what’s happening — and it’s often in your own backyard. Nature’s Year is an almanac of key events in nature occurring in Central and Eastern Ontario, a region that extends from the Bruce Peninsula and Georgian Bay in the west to Ottawa and Cornwall in the east. The book is a chronicle of the passing seasons designed to inform cottagers, gardeners, photographers, suburban backyard birders, and nature enthusiasts alike as to what events in nature to expect each month of the year. Whatever your interest may be — birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, invertebrates, plants, fungi, weather, or the night sky — just turn to a given month and you’ll find a list of what’s happening, often right in your own backyard. This book will also provide a reassuring measure of order and predictability to nature and help the reader become more attentive to and appreciative of the many wonders of the natural world that surround us in this exceptional region of Ontario.

Book Synopsis Byways and Bylines by : Harvey Currell
Download or read book Byways and Bylines written by Harvey Currell and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08-10 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides holding down a full-time editor's job on a big city daily newspaper, Harvey Currell used his spare time for 49 years at the work he loved best-combing the byways and backwoods of Ontario-and infrequently even England and the eastern U.S.-in search of fascinating destinations never discovered by travelers who stick to the superhighways. Every week he distilled his adventures into a Trips column-from 1958 to 1971 for The Toronto Telegram and from 1971 to 2007 for The Toronto Sun. On many of his early expeditions he had two eager passengers, his young daughter and son. They would listen carefully as Harvey interviewed foresters, naturalists, archaeologists, farmers, conservation officers, potters, woodcarvers, trappers, glass blowers, gliders, cabinet makers and dozens of other specialists in many fields. At the conclusion of Harvey's interview, the kids would take over and ask their own questions. Often they would make notes to share their information at school the following week, sometimes before Dad's story had appeared in the paper. Newspaper readers clipped and saved the columns, sometimes for years, before going on the trips. In Byways and Bylines, Harvey recreates 32 memorable trips while sharing his own life story.
