Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use 20 Stories From People Who Met Jesus to enliven favorite Bible stories and to introduce children to puppeteering! Lead kids to discover more about Jesus from the people who knew him best--those he met...like one of the shepherds, Zacchaeus, a Roman soldier, and more! You will get: 2 compact discs with audio for each script. You and your puppeteer friends don't have to worry about digging up sound effects or reading the lines as you perform. It's already done for you! Scripture reference in Table of Contents, Directions for creating a stage, Simple Bible costumes for puppets, Reproducible patterns for props, Reproducible scripts with staging instructions, And a Puppet Primer with tips for powerful and imaginative productions. The twenty scripts you'll find in Instant Puppet Skits have something in common: each features a Bible character who met Jesus and shares a personal insight. John the Baptist tells his would-be, disgusted director that he is not the star attraction, that his purpose was to prepare people to follow Jesus, and while Lazarus tries to collect a refund on his burial, he explains eternal life for those who believe. And you'll find that the scripts have other things in common too: Scripts have no more than four puppets on stage at any one time, and you can re-use the same four "actors" with different costumes to limit the costs of the puppets! Four or less puppets per script makes it easy for you to recruit enough puppeteers! Yet the audience is involved. In "Fish and Loaves", the audience acts the part of the crowd, each of them stuffed with food. After each script you'll find group discussion points in the "For Deeper Learning" section.

Need something awesome for all-age worship, sketches for schools or just want to bring a well-known Bible story alive with the smack-between-the-eyes relevance it got from Jesus?Fresh scripts launch God's timeless word like a rocket. "Parables as Jesus would have told them - witty, punchy and thought-provoking." Christmas and Easter? Sorted. Some quiet and meditative, some a-pun-a-minute - there's a script for every occasion. Meet Elijah's ravens on holiday. Meet texting angels. Meet the Big Bad Cat. Then slow down and relive Good Friday through the eyes of one who was there - Jesus, remember me. Using puppets to express our doubts and confusions is a great way to address the unasked questions. A grandma confessed after one puppet show that she had never understood that Bible story, until now - Click!Drama isn't just for kids. We take a sideways look at our grown-up busyness with the gameshow 'Real Christian', and perhaps in the laughter we can find a truth. Limited resources? No problem. Based on many years' experience with drama and puppetry for schools, churches and community groups, these scripts are immensely practical to suit your room, rehearsals and recruits. Each script has suggestions for characters and props, and the hands-on hints for staging make drama a 'can-do' option, so you can concentrate on the message. To complete the package, the final chapters outline methods for working with puppets and give pointers for using drama outdoors. There are lots of ideas for constructing your own puppet theatre, with designs from small, roll-away up versions to folding, semi-permanent ones. This is the first in the 'A Bucketful of Ideas' series. It is based on the international blog of church resources, The Reflectionary, written by Fay Rowland - lecturer, writer and, as it so happens, puppeteer.Ever wondered what you need to be a *Real* Christian?Click the 'Buy' button, and find out ...Reviewers say: "A Bucketful of Ideas - ideas to educate, entertain and evangelise.""The whole book covers a good range of topics, themes, and styles; together a great variety.""The scripts are funny, punny, expository and engaging.""Creativity in this book in not just in the directions and dialogues it's in the accessible pragmatism as well." "Time-Travel TV is my favourite script ... I always enjoying routine time travel and 'wiggling'!""The introductions to each script are the keys to their convenience, it was good to know which props to expect, which items were optional and some scripts even gave clear permission to improvise and paraphrase.""Very thankful for the puppet theatres section at the back." "30 Pieces of Chocolate is a fine pun-run."Remember to click 'Buy'!

Book excerpt: This anthology of essays aims to explore the many types of relationships that exist between puppets, broadly speaking, and the immaterial world. The allure of the puppet goes beyond its material presence as, historically and throughout the globe, many uses of puppets and related objects have expressed and capitalized on their posited connections to other realms or ability to serve as vessels or conduits for immaterial presence. The flip side of the puppet’s troubling uncanniness is precisely the possibilities it represents for connecting to discarnate realities. Where do we see such connections? How do we describe, analyze, and theorize these relationships? The first of two volumes, this book focuses on these questions in relation to long-established, traditional practices using puppets, devotional objects, and related items with sacred aspects to them or that perform ritual roles. Looking at performance traditions and artifacts from China, Indonesia, Korea, Mali, Brazil, Iran, Germany, and elsewhere, the essays from scholars and practitioners provide a range of useful models and critical vocabularies for addressing the ritual and spiritual aspects of puppet performance, further expanding the growing understanding and appreciation of puppetry generally. This book, along with its companion volume, offers, for the first time, robust coverage of this subject from a diversity of voices, examples, and perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early twenty-first century has seen an explosion of animation. Cartoon characters are everywhere—in cinema, television, and video games and as brand logos. There are new technological objects that seem to have lives of their own—from Facebook algorithms that suggest products for us to buy to robots that respond to human facial expressions. The ubiquity of animation is not a trivial side-effect of the development of digital technologies and the globalization of media markets. Rather, it points to a paradigm shift. In the last century, performance became a key term in academic and popular discourse: The idea that we construct identities through our gestures and speech proved extremely useful for thinking about many aspects of social life. The present volume proposes an anthropological concept of animation as a contrast and complement to performance: The idea that we construct social others by projecting parts of ourselves out into the world might prove useful for thinking about such topics as climate crisis, corporate branding, and social media. Like performance, animation can serve as a platform for comparisons of different cultures and historical eras. Teri Silvio presents an anthropology of animation through a detailed ethnographic account of how characters, objects, and abstract concepts are invested with lives, personalities, and powers—and how people interact with them—in contemporary Taiwan. The practices analyzed include the worship of wooden statues of Buddhist and Daoist deities and the recent craze for cute vinyl versions of these deities, as well as a wildly popular video fantasy series performed by puppets. She reveals that animation is, like performance, a concept that works differently in different contexts, and that animation practices are deeply informed by local traditions of thinking about the relationships between body and soul, spiritual power and the material world. The case of Taiwan, where Chinese traditions merge with Japanese and American popular culture, uncovers alternatives to seeing animation as either an expression of animism or as “playing God.” Looking at the contemporary world through the lens of animation will help us rethink relationships between global and local, identity and otherness, human and non-human.

Book excerpt: As the Moons Light Cove saga draws to a close, our hearts are filled with the growth of our beloved family both near and far. The reach of the McClure clan is felt all over the country, and their shared love and devotion to the Lord are front and center in all that they do. The conclusion of this incredible journey leaves us with mixed feelings of joy and sadness. Charles has the honor of giving one of his beautiful daughters away and watching two more develop into incredible young Christian women with love interests of their own. It seems just as Jewel is watching her children grow and leave home, God has a welcome blessing for her and the entire McClure family. A new resident of the cove brings closure to pains of the past and hope for the future. Gods promises are claimed as new hearts are opened to Jesus and rededications bring families back together. The enduring love of God continues to touch the lives of the people of Moons Light Cove, and its members spread far and wide. From the moment she entered the cove, Jewel has been shown overwhelming love and acceptance. As she has raised her family and instilled the Word of God in them, the spirit of love and kindness has spread from her home throughout the cove. As we close this final chapter, we are truly reminded of the love of God and his mercy that has created a jewel of great worth.

Book excerpt: First published in 1977, The Hong Kong Region is a historical reconstruction of long-settled village and township society in Hong Kong's New Territories between 1850 and 1911. The book's central argument is that the gentry and bureaucracy played almost no role in these communities, which were run by local peasants and shopkeepers who had to deal virtually unaided with routine administration and with every form of disaster, natural or man-made. A substantial new introduction reviews the research and its wider implications for our understanding of traditional Chinese society in the light of later scholarly studies.
