Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pumping by Compressed Air In preparing this book, I have endeavored to place in the hands of the student a comprehensive theoretical study of the subject, and at the same time instruct the Operating engineer in the practical economy essentials of the actual installation. To realize the first, I have quoted from the works of Professors Elmo G. Harris, George Jacob Davis and Carl R. Weidner, and to realize the last, I have incorporated an article by Mr. Arthur H. Diamant together with my own data Obtained as before stated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air: Theory and Computations After five years trying-out of the first edition the second has been prepared with the view to eliminate all errors and ambiguities and to add matter of value where possible without burdening the text with illustrations and descriptions of matter of only temporary value, such as machines and devices that are in use today but may be succeeded by better ones in a few years. It is the author's opinion that current practice, in the general form of machines and their details, can best be studied in trade circulars, of which there are many very creditable productions illustrating and describing a greater variety of machines than can possibly be shown in a text-book. A new chapter has been added on centrifugal fans and turbine compressors. The author has found a need for a clear, concise presentation of the theory underlying such machines, and believes that a more general knowledge of the technicalities of the subject will lead to material betterment of the cheaper forms of fans that make up the greater portion of the total in use. Appendix B, on design of Logarithmic charts, should be welcome to most students since such matter has not appeared in textbooks in common use. Compressed air has long held the Held for rock drilling underground, though electricity has several times attempted to get into that business. At one time it seemed that compressed air would prove the best motive power for underground pumps, but in more recent years the improvements in centrifugal pumps seem to give electricity the advantage. In general, it may be assumed that where rotation is desired electricity will have the advantage, while where rapid reciprocating motion is desired air will have the advantage. In the latter class are all kinds of pneumatic hammers, which have revolutionized several industries since they have been introduced. It is not the intention to enumerate here the applications of compressed air. It is a very versatile, willing and good-natured servant. It offers a fascinating field for the inventor and its usefulness and already numerous applications will surely increase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Progress in Pumps and Pumping Engines Where little power is required, hot air engines are quite in place for powers up to about I horse-power, they are very economical and require but moderate attention. Such motors would often prove the best in country man sions, in farms and under Similar conditions. Compressed air is a valuable source of motor power. It can be carried in pipes for considerable distances with out appreciable loss of pressure, always provided that the air compressor is of the right design and construction; otherwise the loss of power and the cost of compression are apt to be very heavy. Electric motors are coming more and more to the front for pumping purposes, but an essential condition for the use of such power is this, that current is available at a reasonable cost. The advantages under suitable condi tions of electricity are obvious. It is always ready no time is lost in starting there is no condensation of steam. No doubt users of electric power have their own troubles. If the diameter of the cable be too small, or if there are too few strands, there will be a very sensible loss of power, while with too large a cable the first cost will be excessive. But if a cable of suitable diameter be selected, the waste of power will be trifling. Where an electric motor is used three-throw single-acting pumps are the best, as these give a more even distribution of power, which is essential in electric driving. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air: Its Production, Uses, and Applications To limit the consideration of the properties of air when sim ply compressed above the ordinary pressure of the atmosphere was believed to be wanting in scope to make the treatment of the subject complete; this work includes, therefore, a consider ation of the properties of air below atmospheric pressure, for the reason that we are surrounded by an atmosphere compressed by gravity, but it is used in the arts in many ways much below atmospheric pressure, even approaching the zero condition of a vacuum, so that, remote as the connection appears, this subject of partial pressures below the atmosphere properly belongs to a treatise on compressed air. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Magazine, Vol. 26: September, 1921 Pressure may be applied from agencies at the surface through the medium of air or natural gas, or the subterranean pressure may, in effect. Be augmented by a reversal of the compressor, i. E., inducing a partial vacuum. In some districts this latter procedure has answered quite successfully, but there are oil bearing areas where the subterranean condi tions do not lend themselves to a satisfactory operation of this system. To meet the latter circumstances a subsurface pressure must be built up by mechanical means to replace the pressure originally exerted by the pent-up gas. In certain fields gas is tapped from the sand a few feet above the oil-producing formation, and this gas is compressed and forced below to again promote the desired movement of the petroleum. This practice has its drawbacks because it not only tends to waste gas but it subsequently lessens the chance of recover ing much of the oil which finds its way into the gas sand and not toward the shot holes of the wells. The yield of a well may be increased considerably by recourse to gas pumping. As just described. The benefits are as a rule but temporary; and this method of stimulation would not be at all profitable if it were not for the greater measure of gasoline that can be obtained from the gas that is thus enriched by contact with the oil. This gas returns to the surface and is drawn off at the casing head for treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air: A Treatise on the Production, Transmission and Use of Compressed Air In preparing a second edition of this book, its character as an elementary treatise on the principles of Compressed Air has been maintained throughout. To bring the subject up-to-date, however, the greater portion of the chapter on Transmission has been re-written. Modern formulas were introduced with examples of their application. The important effect of altitude differences on Compressed Air installations has been illustrated by reference to new equations in Article 4 and by the example under Article 97. A new Table VIII, containing the principal Compressed Air formulas was substituted for the old table that has become superfluous. The obsolete Hurricane valve in Article 147 has been replaced by a description of the modern Ingersoll-Rogler valve. Altogether, a general revision of the original text and the addition of new material brings the second edition of the book abreast of modern theory and practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Practice in Mining Compressed air has proved itself in very many ways an exceedingly useful agent in coal and metalliferous mining; for transmitting energy into the working-face for drilling and cutting, and for tunnelling Operations, haulage, pumping, and other purposes. The introduction of electricity for mining threatened for a time to supersede compressed air, but experience has proved that electricity 18, under certain condi tions, a source of grave danger, so much so that stringent legislative restrictions have been found necessary. Compressed air, in regard to safety, convenience, and general suitability, has many advantages over electricity and other modes of transmitting power, and should in no wise suffer in comparisons of efficiency if more attention is given to the proper application of the system. Mining engineers in Britain and her colonies do not appear to have given the attention to this subject which it deserves, and possibly the absence of a textbook dealing with it may partly account for this. An endeavour is here made to supply this need, in the first place for students in mining schools and colleges, but it is also hoped the book may prove serviceable to those in practice. It is based upon lectures given to students, and whilst in the first chapter a knowledge of elemen tary mathematics is assumed, and in the second the calculus is used as far as thought necessary, the remainder is for the most part descriptive. A thorough understanding of the principles underlying the generation and use of compressed air in mining practice is most important, and to help students to test their knowledge numerous examples of fully worked out calculations are included In the book. In spite of it all the use of compressed air is rapidly spreading, and every where with satisfaction to the users. I would gladly do What I can to extend the field of its usefulness, and I have so much faith in its powers that I believe that the best'of all ways to advertise it is simply to tell the straight truth about it, and that I have tried to do.
