Book excerpt: The USAF Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Electric Propulsion Group is developing an Advanced pulsed-plasma thruster (PPT) technology demonstration for small satellites. The initial flight opportunity was on MightySat 11.2 - a satellite bus specifically designed to advance AFRL-developed technologies and serve as a risk reduction mission for systems required for TechSat 21. This experiment will demonstrate a high performance PPT, making it a viable thruster for various applications such as orbit raising and initiating and maintaining clusters of small satellites. The experiment will also be the first flight of a new micro-propulsion thruster - a miniaturized version of the PPT, known as the micro-PPT (%-PPT). The u-PPT is ideal for very precise attitude control and pointing, formation flying, and for primary propulsion on microsatellites. A novel on-board diagnostic package will be used to assess the contamination of optical and thermal control surfaces as a result of firing the PPTs. Ground-based observations will also be conducted to assess the on-orbit performance and possible communication impacts of the thruster firings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CubeSats and other small satellites in the 3-25 kg range are increasingly able to conduct meaningful science through advances in technology and miniaturization. However, much of the proposed science requires satellite mobility, which has advanced more slowly due to constraints on CubeSat launches. Pulsed Plasma Thrusters (PPTs) are a potential means of propulsion for these satellites that do not require fluid or gas tanks and feeds and are relatively compact. This makes them an ideal candidate as a low risk propulsion system for secondary payloads capable of passing safety concerns related to launch. Previously, the specific thrust, or thrust output per power input (mN/kW) of PPTs developed for space flight was low for the desired propulsion applications. This work examines the development of a PPT specifically for CubeSat propulsion. It also investigates how several science questions could be answered with these advances, with examples of missions to the asteroid belt and Europa. It is shown that the power, geometry, and propellant are influential factors that can lead to substantial gains in thruster performance. Where Teflon[superscript]TM has been the propellant of choice for previously launched PPTs, the novel use of solid Sulfur propellant is demonstrated with a twofold increase in specific thrust, which is the highest of any material tested in this study. Furthermore, a switch from smooth to serrated coaxial electrodes provides an increase in the specific thrust by up to an additional factor of 2. These changes bring the current test system capabilities to 45 mN/kW with a specific impulse of 1200 sec. This provides the opportunity for CubeSat missions to execute orbital maneuvers with changes in velocity on a range from 50 to 500 m/s. A fully integrated flight model was built and tested to overcome issues arising from the transition from a benchtop system to a CubeSat formfactor and then further tested for launch and space environment compatibility. The miniaturized flight model achieves 25 mN/kW performance and is being tested on the University of Washington built HuskySat-1 3U+ CubeSat, which was launched Nov 2nd 2019 and deployed January 31st 2020.

Book excerpt: There is an increased requirement for microsatellites to support such future missions as formation-flying space-based radar, space control, and on-orbit satellite servicing. Devices that can provide precise impulse bit in the 10 micro Newton range may be enabling for a new fleet of 25-kg class spacecraft supporting these missions. In response to this need the Air Force Research Laboratory is developing a miniaturized propulsion unit: the Micro Pulsed Plasma Thruster (Micro-PPT). Like a standard PPT, The Micro-PPT uses a surface discharge across the face of a solid Teflon(TM) propellant to create and accelerate a combination of plasma and neutral vapor. However the Micro-PPT substantially differs from the standard design by using a self-igniting discharge and eliminating the separate igniter and trigger circuit from the thruster. This simplification enables the order-of- magnitude reductions in the thruster size and operational power level required to meet the microsatellite propulsion requirement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.

Book excerpt: Almost all animals move around frequently in space. Their aim is to walk and fly in search of food or to propagate their species. Thus, changing positions is important for creatures’ survival and maintaining the environment. As such, this book examines movement with a focus on force and propulsion. Chapters cover topics including rocket engines, electric propulsion, mechanisms of force, and more.

Concepts, Applications and Markets for Micro/Nanosatellites in a New Information World". Thus, the Symposium addressed the crucial question: are small satellites the saviour of space programmes around the world It did this from the unique perspective of the International Space today? University - the interdisciplinary, international and intercultural perspective. This Symposium brought together a variety of people working on small satellites - engineers, scientists, planners, providers, operators, policy makers and business executives, together with representatives from regulatory bodies, from national and international organizations, and from the finance sector, and also entrepreneurs. Discussion and debate were encouraged, based on the papers presented and those published here.
