Book excerpt: When a modern girl dates an ancient vampire, it’s a good idea to have her pulse points covered. This matching wrist- and neck-warmer set helps give her just enough protection when she’s alone with her boyfriend, so he’s not as tempted to take a sip. Suggested materials include 4/medium (worsted) yarn, US size 6 (4mm) straight needles, and a cable needle. One size fits most; wrist warmers to fit 6" (15 cm) wrist, cowl approximately 21" (53 cm) in circumference.

Book excerpt: If you are looking for a guide to discover the principles behind electromagnetic pulses, then keep reading... Electromagnetic pulses are created by nuclear explosions. North Korea is actively threatening to test nuclear bombs and releasing radiation into the environment. If North Korea tested a nuclear bomb near the US, the electromagnetic pulses could potentially stop all the electrical devices in the United States. The electromagnetic pulse produces a burst of radiation. Scientists strongly feel that if North Korea fires off a nuclear weapon, it will cause an electromagnetic pulse. The electromagnetic pulse could not only destroy electronic devices but could also wipe out a significant portion of the population in the United States in one blow. We need to be proactive and protect our homes with survival techniques, so we can survive the very real likelihood of these attacks. A sign that an area, region, or country is affected by EMP is when all electronic devices shut down at once. When there are many electromagnetic pulses occur at the same time, they can physically destroy a large number of computer devices, cell phones, and other devices due to the sudden buildup of magnetism. Power transformers would be impacted as well causing blackouts throughout the country, even in areas that weren't directly affected by the blast as they will be taken down because they are connected to the same grid. The severity of the nuclear explosion will depend on the height of where the bomb was dropped. The electromagnetic pulse can be of low frequency and can be of high ultraviolet wavelengths. The US military considers a detonated warhead of this type extremely hazardous. North Korea has threatened numerous times to detonate this type of warhead near the US. When detonated, this warhead could kill millions of people if done in the right place. It is known as HEMP or high-altitude electromagnetic pulse. In addition, the effects of HEMP on the earth could interact with the Earth's magnetic field, causing unknown damage in the long run. This book covers the following topics: What is Electromagnetic Pulses? Nuclear EMP, CME and RF Weapons History of Electromagnetic Pulse Ground Zero of an EMP Effects of an EMP Preparing for an EMP attack Preparation at Home What are the uses of a Faraday Cage? Construct a Simple Faraday Cage Is EMP a Real Threat? How to survive an EMP attack? Shielded Cables, Cabinets and Accessories What defense is there from EMP? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is one of the most prevalent threats to electronic components. In an ESD event, a finite amount of charge is transferred from one object (i.e., human body) to another (i.e., microchip). This process can result in a very high current passing through the microchip within a very short period of time. Thus, more than 35 percent of single-event chip damages can be attributed to ESD events, and designing ESD structures to protect integrated circuits against the ESD stresses is a high priority in the semiconductor industry. Electrostatic Discharge Protection: Advances and Applications delivers timely coverage of component- and system-level ESD protection for semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. Bringing together contributions from internationally respected researchers and engineers with expertise in ESD design, optimization, modeling, simulation, and characterization, this book bridges the gap between theory and practice to offer valuable insight into the state of the art of ESD protection. Amply illustrated with tables, figures, and case studies, the text: Instills a deeper understanding of ESD events and ESD protection design principles Examines vital processes including Si CMOS, Si BCD, Si SOI, and GaN technologies Addresses important aspects pertinent to the modeling and simulation of ESD protection solutions Electrostatic Discharge Protection: Advances and Applications provides a single source for cutting-edge information vital to the research and development of effective, robust ESD protection solutions for semiconductor devices and integrated circuits.

Book excerpt: A practical and comprehensive reference that explores Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) in semiconductor components and electronic systems The ESD Handbook offers a comprehensive reference that explores topics relevant to ESD design in semiconductor components and explores ESD in various systems. Electrostatic discharge is a common problem in the semiconductor environment and this reference fills a gap in the literature by discussing ESD protection. Written by a noted expert on the topic, the text offers a topic-by-topic reference that includes illustrative figures, discussions, and drawings. The handbook covers a wide-range of topics including ESD in manufacturing (garments, wrist straps, and shoes); ESD Testing; ESD device physics; ESD semiconductor process effects; ESD failure mechanisms; ESD circuits in different technologies (CMOS, Bipolar, etc.); ESD circuit types (Pin, Power, Pin-to-Pin, etc.); and much more. In addition, the text includes a glossary, index, tables, illustrations, and a variety of case studies. Contains a well-organized reference that provides a quick review on a range of ESD topics Fills the gap in the current literature by providing information from purely scientific and physical aspects to practical applications Offers information in clear and accessible terms Written by the accomplished author of the popular ESD book series Written for technicians, operators, engineers, circuit designers, and failure analysis engineers, The ESD Handbook contains an accessible reference to ESD design and ESD systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past decade, humanitarian actors have increasingly sought not only to assist people affected by conflicts and natural disasters, but also to protect them. At the same time, protection of civilians has become central to UN peacekeeping operations, and the UN General Assembly has endorsed the principle that the international community has the "responsibility to protect" people when their governments cannot or will not do so. Elizabeth Ferris explores the evolution of the international community's understandings of protection, with a particular emphasis on the humanitarian community. "Protection" is a noble word, with positive connotations, but what does it actually mean in practice? Does providing assistance to vulnerable people protect them, for example? Does monitoring the number of rapes protect women? Does increased engagement in protection activities by humanitarian agencies jeopardize the cornerstone humanitarian principles of neutrality and impartiality? In The Politics of Protection, Ferris examines inconsistent ways in which protection is defined and applied. For example, why do certain groups receive international protection while other equally needy groups do not? Her case studies, ranging from Iraq to Katrina, illustrate the challenges—and limitations—of protecting vulnerable populations from the ravages of war and natural disasters. Ferris argues that the protection paradigms currently in use are inadequate to meet the challenges of the future, such as climate change, protracted displacement, and the changing nature of warfare.

Book excerpt: The papers published in this volume were presented at the Second International Conference on Ultra-WidebandiShort-Pulse (UWB/SP) Electromagnetics, ApriIS-7, 1994. To place this second international conference in proper perspective with respect to the first conference held during October 8-10, 1992, at Polytechnic University, some background information is necessary. As we had hoped, the first conference struck a responsive cord, both in timeliness and relevance, among the electromagnetic community 1. Participants at the first conference already inquired whether and when a follow-up meeting was under consideration. The first concrete proposal in this direction was made a few months after the first conference by Prof. A. Terzuoli of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Dayton, Ohio, who has been a strong advocate of time-domain methods and technologies. He initially proposed a follow-up time-domain workshop under AFIT auspices. Realizing that interest in this subject is lodged also at other Air Force installations, we suggested to enlarge the scope, and received in this endeavor the support of Dr. A. Nachman of AFOSR (Air Force Office of Scientific Research), Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C.
