Book excerpt: Sport as it is largely understood today was invented during the long eighteenth century when the modern rules of sport were codified; sport emerged as a business, a spectacle, and a performance; and gaming organized itself around sporting culture. Examining the underexplored intersection of sport, literature, and culture, this collection situates sport within multiple contexts, including religion, labor, leisure time, politics, nationalism, gender, play, and science. A poetics, literature, and culture of sport swelled during the era, influencing artists such as John Collett and writers including Lord Byron, Jonathan Swift, and Henry Fielding. This volume brings together literary scholars and historians of sport to demonstrate the ubiquity of sport to eighteenth-century life, the variety of literary and cultural representations of sporting experiences, and the evolution of sport from rural pastimes to organized, regular events of national and international importance. Each essay offers in-depth readings of both material practices and representations of sport as they relate to, among other subjects, recreational sports, the Cotswold games, clothing, women archers, tennis, celebrity athletes, and the theatricality of boxing. Taken together, the essays in this collection offer valuable multiple perspectives on reading sport during the century when sport became modern.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rev. Charles Kingsley, one of the Victorian age's most prolific authors, wrote poetry, novels, historical works, sermons, religious tracts, and scientific treatises, as well as political, social, and literary criticism. Among his most famous literary works are the condition-of-England novels Yeast and Alton Locke, and his historical romances Westward Ho! and Hereward the Wake. He also wrote books for children, including The Heroes, Madam How and Lady Why, and perhaps his most well known work, The Water-Babies. A parish priest for much of his life, Kingsley was a particularly prominent social reformer and worked hard to improve the frequently appalling physical, social, and economic conditions of his parishioners. He was also an active educationist and, in addition to promoting ardently a state educational system, conducted penny readings in his parish, campaigned for women's medical education, and held the chairs of English Literature and Composition at the women's Queen's College, London and of Modern History at Cambridge. Not surprisingly, the abundant writings of this multifaceted individual have been the subject of much commentary. Throughout the twentieth century and beyond, scholars of literature, religion, history, and other disciplines have found in Kingsley and his works copious topics for their research. The primary focus of Brendan Rapple's book is to present annotated bibliographies of selected secondary works on the life, activities, and abundant writings of Kingsley published since 1900. Another enhancement is the variety of subject headings assigned to each bibliographic entry, which define major themes in each of Kingsley's work. For scholars in a broad range of disciplines, The Rev. Charles Kingsley: An Annotated Bibliography of Secondary Criticism (1900-2006) will prove to be an invaluable resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of men left their families for the bustling cities of nineteenth-century America, where many of them found work as clerks. The Clerk's Tale recounts their remarkable story, describing the struggle of aspiring businessmen to come of age at the dawn of the modern era. How did these young men understand the volatile world of American capitalism and make sense of their place within it? Thomas Augst follows clerks as they made their way through the boarding houses, parlors, and offices of the big city. Tracing the course of their everyday lives, Augst shows how these young men used acts of reading and writing to navigate the anonymous world of market culture and claim identities for themselves within it. Clerks, he reveals, calculated their prospects in diaries, composed detailed letters to friends and family, attended lectures by key thinkers of the day, joined libraries where they consumed fiction, all while wrestling with the boredom of their work. What results, then, is a poignant look at the literary practices of ordinary people and an affecting meditation on the moral lives of men in antebellum America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Théodore Géricault’s images of black men, women and children who suffered slavery’s trans-Atlantic passage in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, including his 1819 painting The Raft of the Medusa. The book focuses on Géricault’s depiction of black people, his approach towards slavery, and the voices that advanced or denigrated them. By turning to documents, essays and critiques, both before and after Waterloo (1815), and, most importantly, Géricault’s own oeuvre, this study explores the fetters of slavery that Gericault challenged—alongside a growing number of abolitionists—overtly or covertly. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, race and ethnic studies and students of modernism.

The Victorians were divided between multiple views of the political, religious and social issues that motivated their changing aspirations. Such debates are a fundamental aspect of the literature of the period and these essays propose new ways of understanding their significance.
