Book Synopsis Free University, Berlin by : Gabriel Feld
Download or read book Free University, Berlin written by Gabriel Feld and published by Exemplary Projects. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berlin Free University is an imagination of what a building might be - a building designed to function as a piece of the city, adapting to the needs of its users while generating opportunities for social interaction. The university offers a window onto the politicized and optimistic discourse of the Sixties and Seventies, but at the same time illuminates contemporary debates around large projects of infrastructure and public space. This extensive study of the building combines texts with a visual survey containing specifically commissioned photographs as well as archive material, plans and construction details.

Download or read book Roman Bridges written by Colin O'Connor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-12-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romans were the first great builders of bridges in the western world. Professor O'Connor, a civil engineer and expert in bridge construction, has examined a very large number of those bridges that still remain all over the Roman empire. In this book he presents a thorough listing and description of all known bridges, in many cases illustrating the construction of the bridges by his own photographs and sketches. Introductory chapters place the bridges in their geographical and historical contexts, with detailed maps of the empire-wide system of Roman roads and discussion of how these came to be constructed, and an investigation of the technology available to the Romans. Finally, in order to elucidate the principles used by the Romans in designing their bridges Professor O'Connor examines the proportions of the stone arches, and subjects the rules that emerge to modern structural analysis.
Book Synopsis Ordinary Places/Extraordinary Events by : Clara Irazábal
Download or read book Ordinary Places/Extraordinary Events written by Clara Irazábal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clara Irazábal and her contributors explore the urban history of some of Latin America’s great cities through studies of their public spaces and what has taken place there. The avenues and plazas of Mexico City, Havana, Santo Domingo, Caracas, Bogotaì, SaÞo Paulo, Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires have been the backdrop for extraordinary, history-making events. While some argue that public spaces are a prerequisite for the expression, representation and reinforcement of democracy, they can equally be used in the pursuit of totalitarianism. Indeed, public spaces, in both the past and present, have been the site for the contestation by ordinary people of various stances on democracy and citizenship. By exploring the use and meaning of public spaces in Latin American cities, this book sheds light on contemporary definitions of citizenship and democracy in the Americas.

Book Synopsis Fire Design of Concrete Structures - Materials, Structures and Modelling by : fib Fédération internationale du béton
Download or read book Fire Design of Concrete Structures - Materials, Structures and Modelling written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire design of concrete structures has emerged in recent years as a high profile subject of great interest to both experts and the public. This has been largely prompted by severe damage to concrete in a number of recent tunnel fires, as well as a considerable amount of research and development that has taken place world-wide. fib Task Group 4.3, "Fire Design of Concrete Structures", therefore took the initiative to develop this bulletin in order to present the results of this international research to a wider group of concrete professionals. The report presents a general brief outline of the effect of fire on both concrete material and concrete structures, with emphasis placed on the important developments of the past few years, namely: (a) the increasing use of high strength concrete (HSC) in buildings, tunnels and bridges; (b) the growing acceptance of the use of performance based fire engineering calculations for the structural analysis and design against fire; (c) the problem of, and solutions to, explosive spalling; and (d) fires in tunnels. This report is not intended to be an exhaustive review of the effect of fire on concrete and concrete structures, nor to present a database of properties at high temperature. Instead, the main aims of this document are to present recent trends and developments, highlight key influencing factors, bring together the disparate but related issues in one short document, highlight the deficiencies in current practice and point to the future. The basic principles of performance based codes and fire engineering are also presented on the assumption that the reader is not a specialist in this field.

Book Synopsis Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment by : Henri Lefebvre
Download or read book Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment written by Henri Lefebvre and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment is the first publication in any language of the only book devoted to architecture by Henri Lefebvre. Written in 1973 but only recently discovered in a private archive, this work extends Lefebvre’s influential theory of urban space to the question of architecture. Taking the practices and perspective of habitation as his starting place, Lefebvre redefines architecture as a mode of imagination rather than a specialized process or a collection of monuments. He calls for an architecture of jouissance—of pleasure or enjoyment—centered on the body and its rhythms and based on the possibilities of the senses. Examining architectural examples from the Renaissance to the postwar period, Lefebvre investigates the bodily pleasures of moving in and around buildings and monuments, urban spaces, and gardens and landscapes. He argues that areas dedicated to enjoyment, sensuality, and desire are important sites for a society passing beyond industrial modernization. Lefebvre’s theories on space and urbanization fundamentally reshaped the way we understand cities. Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment promises a similar impact on how we think about, and live within, architecture.
Book Synopsis Koch + Partner 1970-2000 by : Norbert Koch
Download or read book Koch + Partner 1970-2000 written by Norbert Koch and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koch + Partner recently made the headlines when they won the competition to design the new Terminal 2 at Munich Airport -- nevertheless the architectural community has long been aware of this office. Their architecture does not consist of singular, extravagant constructions but is characterised by buildings which harmonise with the townscape, expertly serving their purpose. Their forms are clear and calm, blending with the existing structures and simultaneously enhancing them. The present book documents the work of this interdisciplinary team over the previous three decades. The full range of their work is considered -- from extensive urban planning projects to the realisation of multi-storey buildings. It also reveal how a sense of team spirit and partnership can be used to the advantage of not only private and public clients but also the user.

Book Synopsis The New Acropolis Museum by : Dēmētrios Pantermalēs
Download or read book The New Acropolis Museum written by Dēmētrios Pantermalēs and published by Skira Rizzoli. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive look at the eagerly anticipated New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece, and the celebrated collection it houses. Marking the opening of the New Acropolis Museum, this book examines both its architecture and the archaeological treasures it was built to house. The building addresses the dramatic complexities of the collection and the site with minimalist simplicity by using three main materials—glass, stainless steel, and concrete. "There’s no way at the beginning of the twenty-first century you can try to imitate even superficially the art of 2,500 years ago," Tschumi says. The "precision of the concept was really what counted." The book provides an in-depth look at the creation of the building, set only 280 meters from the Parthenon, as well as the restoration, preservation, and housing of its exhibits through over 200 photographs, drawings, and texts.
