Book excerpt: Plant Pathology presents information and advances in plant pathology including disease induction and development and disease resistance and control. This book is organized into two major parts encompassing 14 chapters that focus on diseases, pathogenicity, and pathogen variability. The first part of the book deals with general considerations of disease, the disease cycle, parasitism and pathogenicity, and the variability in pathogens. This is followed by a presentation of the mechanisms by which pathogens cause disease and plants resist disease. Core chapters focus on the effects of pathogen-produced enzymes, toxins, growth regulators, and polysaccharides on the structural organization and on the basic physiological processes of photosynthesis, translocation, and respiration. The chapters also discuss the defense mechanisms of the plant. Moreover, this book explains the genetics of host-parasite interaction, effects of environment on disease development, and control. The second part of the book deals with the infectious diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, parasitic higher plants, viruses, and nematodes. This part also looks into the noninfectious diseases caused by environmental factors. The diseases caused by each type of pathogen are discussed comprehensively as a group and are subsequently discussed individually in detail. This book includes diagrams of cycles for each disease to create visual images for better understanding of the disease and message retention. This book is ideal for students with introductory course in plant pathology.

Book excerpt: One of the most important subfields of agriculture and horticulture, plant pathology, has grown and taken on new dimensions during the last three decades. Fulfilling the long-felt need of pathologists and students for comprehensive book on fundamentals of plant pathology is a source of great joy and happiness for us. This book will undoubtedly be useful for the young, asporing, budding plant pathology imaginations to take up subject with confidence because it presents the fundamentals of fungi, bacteria, viruses, classifications, and principles of the plant pathology in a condensed form that is easily understood by undergradure students. Plant pathology is study of the living things and environmental factors that cause disease in plants, mechanisms through which these factors cause disease in plants, interactions between the disease-causing agents and diseased plant, and the methods for preventing disease, mitigating its effects, or controlling disease either before it develops in a plant. Most plant diseases are caused by biotic organisms. The most prevalent plant diseases include those caused by fungus, bacteria, phytoplasmas, viruses, viroids, nematodes, and parasitic higher plants. Abiotic disorders are triggered by factors other than infectious ones. Disorders may be caused by a wide variety of factors, including but not limited to: temperature and moisture extremes, light and nutrition extremes, bad soil, pesticide and pollution exposure, severe winds and hail, and poor cultural practises. The damage produced by insect assaults and competition from noxious plants (weeds) are other problems they face. Plant pathology studies often do not include plant damage from humans, other animals, or insects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mushrooms magically spew forth from the earth in the hours that follow a summer rain. Fuzzy brown molds mischievously turn forgotten peaches to slime in the kitchen fruit bowl. And in thousands of other ways, members of the kingdom Fungi do their part to make life on Earth the miracle that it is. In this lively book, George Hudler leads us on a tour of an often-overlooked group of organisms, which differ radically from both animals and plants. Along the way the author stops to ponder the marvels of nature and the impact of mere microbes on the evolution of civilization. Nature's ultimate recyclers not only save us from drowning in a sea of organic waste, but also provide us with food, drink, and a wide array of valuable medicines and industrial chemicals. Some fungi make deadly poisons and psychedelic drugs that have interesting histories in and of themselves, and Hudler weaves tales of those into his scientific account of the nature of the fungi. The role of fungi in the Irish potato famine, in the Salem Witch Trials, in the philosophical writings of Greek scholars, and in the creation of ginger snaps are just a few of the many great moments in history to grace these pages. Hudler moves so easily from discussing human history to exploring scientific knowledge, all with a sense of humor and enthusiasm, that one can well understand why he is an award-winning teacher both at Cornell University as well as nationally. Few, for instance, who read his invitation to "get out of your chair and take a short walk" will ever again look without curiosity and admiration at the "rotten" part of the world around them. Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds is full of information that will satisfy history buffs, science enthusiasts, and anyone interested in nature's miracles. Everyone in Hudler's audience will develop a new appreciation of the debt they owe to the molds for such common products as penicillin, wine, and bread.
