Download or read book Map Framework written by Mark McKenney and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of a map as a fundamental data type. It defines maps at three levels. The first is an abstract level, in which mathematic concepts are leveraged to precisely explain maps and operational semantics. The second is at a discrete level, in which graph theory is used to create a data model with the goal of implementation in computer systems. Finally, maps are examined at an implementation level, in which the authors discuss the implementation of a fundamental map data type in database systems. The map data type presented in this book creates new mechanisms for the storage, analysis, and computation of map data objects in any field that represents data in a map form. The authors develop a model that includes a map data type capable of representing thematic and geometric attributes in a single data object. The book provides a complete example of mathematically defining a data type, ensuring closure properties of those operations, and then translating that type into a state that is suited for implementation in a particular context. The book is designed for researchers and professionals working in geography or computer science in a range of fields including navigation, reasoning, robotics, geospatial analysis, data management, and information retrieval.

Book excerpt: "The National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) has the role of collecting, managing, and disseminating the great mass of information produced by the scientific observation of interplanetary space and the physical world. Data activities in seismology , gravity, geomagnetism, marine geology and geophysics, geothermics, and solar-terrestrial physics are directed by NESDIS' National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) in Boulder, Colo. NGDC also operates World Data Centers (WDC-A) f o r Marine Geology and Geophysics, for Solar-Terrestrial Physics, for Solid Earth Geophysics, and for Glaciology under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences. This catalog briefly describes the products and services in seismology"--Introduction.
Book Synopsis A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources by : Eva H. Dodsworth
Download or read book A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources written by Eva H. Dodsworth and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary uses of traditional cartographic resources and modern GIS tools allow for the analysis and discovery of information across a wide spectrum of fields. A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources navigates the numerous American and Canadian cartographic resources available in print and online, offering researchers, academics and students with information on how to locate and access the large variety of resources, new and old. Dozens of different cartographic materials are highlighted and summarized, along with lists of map libraries and geospatial centers, and related professional associations. A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources consists of 18 chapters, two appendices, and a detailed index that includes place names, and libraries, structured in a manner consistent with most reference guides, including cartographic categories such as atlases, dictionaries, gazetteers, handbooks, maps, plans, GIS data and other related material. Almost all of the resources listed in this guide are categorized by geography down to the county level, making efficient work of the type of material required to meet the information needs of those interested in researching place-specific cartographic-related resources. Additionally, this guide will help those interested in not only developing a comprehensive collection in these subject areas, but get an understanding of what materials are being collected and housed in specific map libraries, geospatial centers and their related websites. Of particular value are the sections that offer directories of cartographic and GIS libraries, as well as comprehensive lists of geospatial datasets down to the county level. This volume combines the traditional and historical collections of cartography with the modern applications of GIS-based maps and geospatial datasets.
