Book excerpt: Jones (history, Canisius College, Buffalo, NY) introduces "crossing borders" as a metaphor for challenging racial, geo-political, and disciplinary divides. In 13 papers originally delivered at a namesake 1998 U. of Buffalo conference honoring German-Jewish refugee historian G. Iggers, US and German academics explore the leitmotifs of migration, ethnicity, and minorities in public policy in Germany and the US; the struggle for civil rights in both countries; new perspectives on the experiences of Jewish refugees from Germany; and reflections on difference and equality in historiography, with a contribution by Iggers. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of texts and documents selected from and illustrating the history of Artpool, a non-profit artist run institution in Budapest, established in 1979 by György Galántai and Júlia Klaniczay and operating since 1992 under the name of Artpool Art Research Center. The book focuses on Artpool’s direct antecedents (among them the events at György Galántai's Chapel Studio in Balatonboglár, 1970–1973), on the foundation, development, art projects and events, as well as the preferences and issues pertaining to art research (not independent of the historical and social environment they were conceived in) that had formed throughout the course of many years and decades. "The occasion of the publication of ARTPOOL The Experimental Art Archive of East-Central Europe is a milestone in the history of art for its documentation of a remarkable period in the chronicles of conceptual, performance, installation, and video art, as well ephemeral mediums such as mail art and artists’ stamp sheets, postcards, rubber stamp imprints, artists’ writings and samizdat publications. The work represented in the Artpool archive is astonishing in its scope and quantity, quality of imagination, intellectual force, and the courage of the artists who created it. This volume presents an opportunity to reflect on the events that brought Artpool into being, to acknowledge that while originating in the context of East-Central Europe, Artpool’s community has always been international, and to evaluate its broad contributions to world culture and society." (Kristine Stiles)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, more than 300 violent deaths have occurred in or near school campuses. The killers, their motivations and backgrounds, and levels of damage inflicted vary, but our response and our goal remains singular: to protect our schools and keep those within them safe. This handbook seeks to help administrators, school boards, contractors, teachers_anyone connected with the design, construction, or administration of schools_achieve this goal by providing easy-to-follow guidelines for building safer school environments. Drawing from various government resources, including the Centers for Disease Control, Department of Education, Department of Defense, and Department of Health and Human Services, this one-of-a-kind handbook takes a two-part approach to protecting schools from threats. The first part addresses how to design and build a safe school. It provides a basic security overview and discusses how to identify critical assets and conduct risk-threat assessments. The second part of the book shifts from infrastructure to inhabitants. Here, you'll learn how to produce a detailed crisis management plan to help your facility prevent incidents from happening and to deal with them swiftly and effectively should one occur. You'll also learn various 'people' policies and practices you can implement to reduce drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, vandalism, and other violence and crime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tribute to 40 years of contributions by Professor Mo Jamshidi who is a well known and respected scholar, researcher, and educator. Mo Jamshidi has spent his professional career formalizing and extending the field of large-scale complex systems (LSS) engineering resulting in educating numerous graduates specifically, ethnic minorities. He has made significant contributions in modeling, optimization, CAD, control and applications of large-scale systems leading to his current global role in formalizing system of systems engineering (SoSE), as a new field. His books on complex LSS and SoSE have filled a vacuum in cyber-physical systems literature for the 21st Century. His contributions to ethnic minority engineering education commenced with his work at the University of New Mexico (UNM, Tier-I Hispanic Serving Institution) in 1980 through a NASA JPL grant. Followed by several more major federal grants, he formalized a model for educating minorities, called VI-P Pyramid where K-12 students(bottom of pyramid) to doctoral (top of pyramid) students form a seamless group working on one project. Upper level students mentor lower ones on a sequential basis. Since 1980, he has graduated over 114 minority students consisting of 62 Hispanics, 34 African Americans., 15 Native Americans, and 3 Pacific Islanders. This book contains contributed chapters from colleagues, and former and current students of Professor Jamshidi. Areas of focus are: control systems, energy and system of systems, robotics and soft computing.
