Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of State Librarian: 1900 In line with progressive library work, and with a View to rendering more efficient service in my department, I have adopted the card system of cataloguing, and find it more convenient, more economical, and in every way pref erable to the usual printed catalogue required by law. This involves the saving of about $100 each year, (which would be the cost of a printed catalogue), while for utility and serviceableness the card system is incomparably superior. By this arrangement new books are catalogued as they arrive, thus showing in convenient classification the latest editions of text-books and other works of refer ence, and bringing the list right up to date. Since my last report I have collected and brought together in the Historical Room of the Library, for more convenient reference, the Colonial and Revolutionary records of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Con necticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Penn sylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina, making altogether a mass of exceedingly interesting historical matter. It will be noted that all of the original thirteen States, except South Carolina and Georgia, are represented in this collection. I am informed that South Carolina has 'a commission at work now collecting data and pre paring material for a similar publication, having only a short time since paid for a transcript of the C010 nial Records of that State on file in the British Public Records Office in London. Thus it will be seen that, of the entire colonial sisterhood, Georgia is the only State that has not either printed these valuable records, or is pre paring to do so. A book is simply a man with one thing to say. When books were scarce no one could afford to own all he wanted. Now they have become so numerous that no one, not even a millionaire, can afford to get all he wants. Even the Astor Library is not complete in any given field. One is now satisfied if he knows the men who knew the facts, without knowing the facts himself. The library of the educated man should consist of as many working tools as possible - the clas sics, the various books, and as many en'cyclopaedias, dictionaries, and circulars as possible. The Catalogue of the Brooklyn Library was a model of literary work, and, as has been well said, almost a perfect realization of an impossibility. For his own part he thought more of the Catalogue than he did of any other volume in the entire Library. To a reading man the Catalogue was invaluable, and he would consider no library - no private library of any considerable extent - perfect without it. Without it the library would be a mockery to the mass of readers. As a student he wished to express his gratitude to the Brooklyn Library. All his thinking and active life was associated with it. Brooklyn is a City of homes and has only a few things to unite it as a people, among which may be mentioned the Park, the Bridge, Ridgewood, and this Library. The distinguished merit of the Catalogue had not escaped the notice of the compilers of the elaborate article upon Libraries in the latest edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Eighth Annual Report, 1889 As to the relation of the Library to the public schools, your committee suggest to the Trustees that the School Committee be requested to furnish to the Library, free of charge, a complete set of all the books and publications provided by them for the use of scholars in the public schools. Any report which the committee could make on the Patent-room Department Of the Library for 1889 would be but a repetition of the very full one printed last year; and as the suggestions made at that time, although approved by the Trustees, cannot be carried out for want of funds, we think it advisable to report merely, that the department is being developed slowly, according to the lines laid out at that time. The new acquisitions made on the recommendation of Mr. Heard are few, and form part Of the Librarian's gen eral statement.
