Book excerpt: During two and three week periods in each of the last seven late-summers, I have wandered about southwest Wyoming's highways and two-track trails...learning much about the geographies of Great Divide Basin and many interesting sites immediately surrounding that awesome, fascinating, wind-blown and sun-burnished stretch of high desert, making too short, pleasurable journeys into nostalgia. During these seductive and productive travels, my eyes, ears, nose, hands and feet have researched, catalogued and accessioned much new material. Memories will lure me back for more.
Download or read book Honest Horses written by Paula Morin and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2006-02-13 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horses have been part of the American West since the first Spanish explorers brought their European-bred steeds onto the new continent. Soon thereafter, some of these animals, lost or abandoned by their owners or captured by indigenous peoples, became the foundation of the great herds of mustangs (from the Spanish mesteño, stray) that still roam the West. These feral horses are inextricably intertwined with the culture, economy, and mythology of the West. The current situation of the mustangs as vigorous competitors for the scanty resources of the West’s drought-parched rangelands has put them at the center of passionate controversies about their purpose, place, and future on the open range. Photographer/oral historian Paula Morin has interviewed sixty-two people who know these horses best: ranchers, horse breeders and trainers, Native Americans, veterinarians, wild horse advocates, mustangers, range scientists, cowboy poets, western historians, wildlife experts, animal behaviorists, and agents of the federal Bureau of Land Management. The result is the most comprehensive, impartial examination yet of the history and impact of wild mustangs in the Great Basin. Morin elicits from her interviewees a range of expertise, insight, and candid opinion about the nature of horses, ranching, and the western environment. Honest Horses brings us the voices of authentic westerners, people who live intimately with horses and the land, who share their experiences and love of the mustangs, and who understand how precariously all life exists in Great Basin.

Book Synopsis America's Last Wild Horses by : Hope Ryden
Download or read book America's Last Wild Horses written by Hope Ryden and published by Lyons Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No wild animal captures the spirit of North America quite so powerfully as the wild horse -- nor does any face so many diverse and potent enemies. In this thoughtful, provocative study, Ryden combs the history of these proud and noble horses, from their origins among the Spanish mustangs of the conquistadors. Updating their story to the present day, when -- destroyed as varmints and buffeted by misguided federal programs -- the wild horse faces an ever more threatened future, Ryden champions their cause. Distinguished by sixty vivid photographs, "America's Last Wild Horses" is a compelling testament to the life of a uniquely American symbol of grace and wildness. Now with stunning new color photographs.

Book Synopsis The Size of the Risk by : Leisl Carr Childers
Download or read book The Size of the Risk written by Leisl Carr Childers and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-10-09 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Basin, a stark and beautiful desert filled with sagebrush deserts and mountain ranges, is the epicenter for public lands conflicts. Arising out of the multiple, often incompatible uses created throughout the twentieth century, these struggles reveal the tension inherent within the multiple use concept, a management philosophy that promises equitable access to the region’s resources and economic gain to those who live there. Multiple use was originally conceived as a way to legitimize the historical use of public lands for grazing without precluding future uses, such as outdoor recreation, weapons development, and wildlife management. It was applied to the Great Basin to bring the region, once seen as worthless, into the national economic fold. Land managers, ranchers, mining interests, wilderness and wildlife advocates, outdoor recreationists, and even the military adopted this ideology to accommodate, promote, and sanction a multitude of activities on public lands, particularly those overseen by the Bureau of Land Management. Some of these uses are locally driven and others are nationally mandated, but all have exacted a cost from the region’s human and natural environment. In The Size of the Risk, Leisl Carr Childers shows how different constituencies worked to fill the presumed “empty space” of the Great Basin with a variety of land-use regimes that overlapped, conflicted, and ultimately harmed the environment and the people who depended on the region for their livelihoods. She looks at the conflicts that arose from the intersection of an ever-increasing number of activities, such as nuclear testing and wild horse preservation, and how Great Basin residents have navigated these conflicts. Carr Childers’s study of multiple use in the Great Basin highlights the complex interplay between the state, society, and the environment, allowing us to better understand the ongoing reality of living in the American West.
