Book Synopsis The Sport and Prey of Capitalists by : Linda McQuaig
Download or read book The Sport and Prey of Capitalists written by Linda McQuaig and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2019-08-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are we selling off the impressive public enterprises we often battled as a nation to create? In the early 1900s, thousands of Canadians battled wealthy interests, winning control of Niagara Falls and creating a public power company. Another popular movement succeeded in creating Canada’s public broadcasting system to counter American dominance of the airwaves. And a Canadian doctor established a publicly owned laboratory that saved countless lives by producing affordable medications, contributing to medical breakthroughs and helping to eradicate smallpox throughout the world. But in recent decades, we have allowed our inspiring public enterprises to be privatized and our vital public programs downsized, leaving us increasingly dominated by the forces of private greed that rule the marketplace. In The Sport and Prey of Capitalists, Linda McQuaig challenges the dogma of privatization, which has defined our political era. She argues that now more than ever, as we grapple with climate change and income inequality, we need to expand, not shrink, our public sphere.
Book Synopsis Government, Limited by : John Calvert
Download or read book Government, Limited written by John Calvert and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: Government Limited challenges the view that big government is responsible for Canada's economic crisis. The fundamental problem with government, according to authro John Calvert, has been its subordination to business interests. This has resulted in the adoption of regressive social and economic policies which have sacrificed the interests of ordinary Canadians to placate the insatiable demands of the corporate sector. Calvert is no apologist for existing governments. He holds that the mismanagement of the public sector by the pro-business governments has resulted in widespread alienation among citizens towards public programs....The solution to Canada's economic crisis and to the deteriorating financial situation of governments lies in the adoption of a fundamentally different approaclh to economic policy. Calvert puts forward a controversial 10-point Alternative Economic Strategy which he believes can form the basis of this approach.
Book Synopsis Governance and Public Policy in Canada by : Michael M. Atkinson
Download or read book Governance and Public Policy in Canada written by Michael M. Atkinson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governance and Public Policy in Canada lays the foundation for a systematic analysis of policy developments, shaped as they are by multiple players, institutional tensions, and governance legacies. Arguing that provinces are now the most central site of governance and policy innovation, the book assesses the role of the provinces and places the provincial state in its broader economic, institutional, social, and territorial context. The aim throughout is to highlight the crucial role of provinces in policy changes that directly affect the lives of citizens. Three key themes unify this book. First, it addresses the role of policy convergence and divergence among provinces. Although the analysis acknowledges enduring differences in political culture and institutions, it also points to patterns of policy diffusion and convergence in specific areas in a number of provinces. Second, the book explores the push and pull between centralization and decentralization in Canada as it affects intergovernmental relations. Third, it underscores that although the provinces play a greater role in policy development than ever before, they now face a growing tension between their expanding policy ambitions and their capacity to develop, fund, implement, manage, and evaluate policy programs. Governance and Public Policy in Canada describes how the provincial state has adapted in the context of these changing circumstances to transcend its limited capacity while engaging with a growing number of civil society actors, policy networks, and intergovernmental bodies.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: The Mixed Ownership Corporation (MOC) inhabits the murky area between the public and private sectors. It is a commercial operation - ususally a joint stock company - in which equity and/or representation on the board of directors is shared by private investors and the national or a provincial government. Current popularity of the privatization concept and the allure of revenue from equity sales obscure consideration of the less immediate issue: what happens when the preferences of management and the state shareholder conflict? To answer that question, and to discover the possibilities and limitations of MOC as a public policy instrument, Stephen Brooks examines three different organizational structures - Canada Development Corporation, Telesat Canada, and Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec (its private sector investments).

Book Synopsis Profiting the Crown by : Matthew J. Bellamy
Download or read book Profiting the Crown written by Matthew J. Bellamy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crown corporations are widely regarded as a Canadian invention. Since 1841 they have been dexterously implemented and hotly debated as instruments of public policy. However the failures of a number of state-run enterprises in the twentieth century have led a majority of Canadians to conclude that government has no place in the boardrooms of the nation. Matthew Bellamy's comprehensive account of Polymer's rise and evolution contradicts this widely held position and brings to light the accomplishments of one of Canada's pioneering crown corporations.
