Book excerpt: This book has been written on the basis of the research done between 2008 and 2010 as part of the European Commission funded FREIGHTVISION project. The “FREIGHTVISION - Freight Transport 2050 Foresight” project was funded by the Directorate General MOVE to design a long term vision for European freight transport in 2050 and to identify actions and research to progress appropriate freight transport measures in Europe. The project was carried out as a foresight process encompassing four conferences in which the project team identified and developed with the aid of more than 100 experts an action plan for securing long term freight transport in Europe. The book provides insights into the freight transport visions and Backcasts identified for 2035 and 2050, issues which need to be addressed and measures which were assessed to be part of future paths to assure an economical, environmental, and social freight transport system.

Book Synopsis Environmental and Energy Law by : Karen Makuch
Download or read book Environmental and Energy Law written by Karen Makuch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite bringing prosperity, industrialisation generally leads to increasing levels of pollution which has a detrimental impact on the environment. In response, legislation which seeks to control or prevent such impact has become common. Similarly, climate change and energy security have become major drivers for the regulatory regimes that have emerged in the energy field. Given the global or regional scope of many environmental problems, international cooperation is often necessary to ensure such legislation is effective. The EU and the UK have contributed to the development of the environmental and energy law regimes currently in force, spanning across international, transnational and national levels. At the same time, practical responses to environmental and energy problems have largely been the focus of engineers, scientists and other technical experts. Environmental & Energy Law attempts to bridge the knowledge gap between legal developments designed to achieve environmental and/or energy-related objectives and the practical, scientific and technical considerations applicable to the same environmental problems. In particular, it attempts to convey a broad range of topical issues in environmental and energy law, from climate and energy regulation, technology innovation and transfer, to pollution control, environmental governance and enforcement. In addition the book outlines key sector specific legal regimes (including water, waste and air quality management), focusing on issues or topics that are particularly relevant to both environmental and energy lawyers, and engineering, science and technology-oriented professionals and students. In this vein, the book guides the reader on some basic practical applications of the law within scientific, engineering and other practical settings. The book will be useful to all those working or studying in the environmental or energy arena, including law students, legal professionals, engineering and science students and professionals. By adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to environmental and energy law, the book embraces all readerships and helps to address the often thorny problem of communication between scientists, engineers, lawyers and policy-makers.

Book Synopsis The conclusions of the European Council and the Council of Ministers by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: European Scrutiny Committee
Download or read book The conclusions of the European Council and the Council of Ministers written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: European Scrutiny Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conclusions of the European Council are politically binding on the Member States of the European Union and have a major influence on the direction of EC and EU business. The process of preparing the Conclusions is secretive with Parliament having no opportunity to scrutinise the Conclusions before the Prime Minister commits the UK to them. Whilst the Council of Ministers sometimes has conclusions and sometimes does not ( there are different Council of Ministers, each dealing with a separate policy area), the European Scrutiny Committee believes that a clarification of the Conclusions-process is needed and the objective of this report is to inquire into the arrangements for the preparation, consideration and approval of the Conclusions of the European Council and the Council of Ministers. The Committee has set out a number of conclusions and recommendations, including: that the Government should discuss with other Member States the options of improving the process and removing present inefficiencies and eccentricities of the proceedings of the European Council; that the Government should deposit within the scrutiny process in Parliament the draft Conclusions of the European Council; that the Government presses the case with other Member States for establishing criteria to determine when Conclusions of the Council of Ministers are required.
