Book excerpt: An emotional tale of identity, sexuality and suicide derived from personal experience about three teenage boys who struggle to come to terms with their homosexuality in a small Western Australian town. On the surface, nerd Zeke, punk Charlie and footy wannabe Hammer look like they have nothing in common. But scratch that surface and you'd find three boys in the throes of coming to terms with their homosexuality in a town where it is invisible. Invisible Boys is a raw, confronting YA novel that explores the complexities and trauma of rural gay identity with painful honesty, devastating consequences and, ultimately, hope.

Book excerpt: This book follows the local boardriding culture through a period of decadence and high times. It is the first book of a trilogy about the challenges that faced the subterranean surfing culture as it began losing its heritage to the yuppies who took advantage of negative gearing in the late 80s and started buying up Bondi. As property values and rates climbed, school enrollments fell and so started the decline of the working class folk of 'Scum Valley'. Us surfers used to call the beach 'Scum Valley' because of the old stink pipe at north that used to pump raw sewerage out into the ocean for us to surf in. We valued street credibility above all else and the community was very tight considering it's close location to such underworld locations as Kings Cross, Darlinghurst and the CBD in general. Being a city beach meant that a colourful cross-section of characters graced our town with the millions of other tourists and beach goers. The story has a David and Goliath twist to it as a rich kid waltzes into town and sets up a surf shop and begins winning friends and influencing people. A staunch local named Dan has a run in with him and so starts a feud that lasts for a decade (Span of the 3 books). Dan eventually opens his own shop and the fallout between rival surf shop clubs sends ripples through the beach. It divides opinions and sets a precedent for ongoing battles that are fought in the streets and in the water.

Book excerpt: An outrageously funny, heartbreaking read – when Ruby finds out she has cancer on the brink of her 50th birthday, she decides to start living instead of complying... Ruby has always been the generous mediator among her friends, family and colleagues, which is why they've all turned up to celebrate her 50th birthday. But after too many glasses of champers, Ruby takes her moment in the spotlight to reveal what she really thinks of every one of them. She accuses her husband of having an affair and lambasts her mother for a lifetime of playing her three daughters against each other – it's blisteringly brutal. As the stunned gathering gawks at Ruby, the birthday girl reveals that she has terminal cancer, and has cashed in her life savings to take her two estranged sisters cruising into the sunset for a dose of HRT – Husband Replacement Therapy. But is Ruby being courageous or ruthlessly selfish? Praise for Kathy Lette: 'Fabulous, fast-paced, funny & unapologetically female. Nobody does it better.' DEBORAH FRANCES-WHITE, THE GUILTY FEMINIST 'Deliciously rude and darkly funny, but with compassion and humanity at its heart. Read with relish.' NICOLE KIDMAN 'Kathy Lette can turn from raunchy farce to the most tender emotion in a trice.' STEPHEN FRY

Book excerpt: Having just finished school, the summer of 2009 presents endless possibilities for 17-year-old goth Jez. Living with her alcoholic mother in a government rental in Canberra's outer-suburbs, with little money or future prospects, her time is spent with emo Lukey trying to conjure quick fixes for their boredom - tatts, piercings, drinking, Xbox, weed and pills. Alienated and intimidated when Lukey becomes sexually involved with the effervescent Melbournite Laura, Jez renews a friendship with her neighbour, Casey, who's working as a stripper and raking the money in. When Casey's bikie punk brother Cash enters the picture, Jez is besotted, though also terrified with good reason. At the same time, Jez's mum hooks up with a local bartender placing a strain on their already fragile relationship. Over the summer, Jez runs a gauntlet of new experiences and discovers she is not quite ready for the world outside her neighbourhood. Filled with humour, brilliant observations and shocking revelations, Snake Bite is a contemporary Puberty Blues.

In this no-holds-barred account Bruce Beresford takes us through the highs and lows of the screen trade from deals at dinner tables to dressing downs in backlots, from far-flung locations, to the centres of power, with a cast of characters that includes Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Jodie Foster, Jeffrey Archer, Morgan Freeman and many others. Delightfully literate and sharply observed, this is a candid look at the world of film-making from one of its most accomplished practitioners.

Book excerpt: 'Finding Ecstasy' is the sobering debut novel by Norman Fox. It's about growing up as an intensely closeted teenager and engaging in high-risk activities. It's about the double-lives of a group of A-grade high school students who discover the underground Sydney dance party scene of the late 1980s. It's about mental health, drug addiction and taking one too many pills. Finding Ecstasy is 'Puberty Blues' meets 'Brokeback Mountain' set against the backdrop of the emerging Sydney rave scene. It's about the real-life consequences of experiencing too much, too young. This novel is dedicated to a childhood friend of Norman who passed away as a consequence of drug addiction. It was written to help educate teens going through similar issues today and, hopefully, the people in power who think they know what's best in terms of public policy on such taboo topics.
