Book excerpt: While Lana Lee is away at a restaurant convention, her friends at Asia Village do their best to keep things running smoothly in this behind-the-scenes look at the Noodle Shop Mystery world. While Lana is away on a business trip, Megan Riley, best friend and roommate, is on doggie duty. Things between Kikkoman—Lana’s loveable black pug—and Megan go smoothly, except they both have a case of cabin fever, thanks to another treacherous Cleveland winter. When Megan comes up with the idea to take Kikko to Asia Village after a grooming appointment, she never imagined that the wrinkly little dog would disappear right under her nose. Megan enlists the help of Kimmy Tran who is more than willing to help with the task. She even goes as far as naming their recovery efforts: Operation Pu Pu Plunder. Kimmy quickly involves—to Megan’s dismay—many Asia Village shop owners, employees, and even a few regular customers to assist in tracking down clues in search of Lana’s missing dog. And though Megan begrudgingly appreciates the help of Lana’s beloved work community, she has just one rule for all of them: Don’t. Tell. Lana. THE FIRST RULE OF OPERATION PU PU PLUNDER: DON’T TALK ABOUT OPERATION PU PU PLUNDER.

Even though Bud had learned at an early age that family was not a team sport, this last series of events threatened Bud’s relationships with the people he cared the most about, his own family. Book excerpt: Hotpots make the perfect, simple family-style meal. Meat, veggies, seafood and other ingredients burbling inside the pot, together with a flavorful stock makes the perfect get-together meal. As a part of the Asian food tradition, hotpots are quite famous around the area. Taking its roots from Mongolia, the Chinese have since then taken and developed the basics of hotpot cooking, molding and melding it to their own cooking traditions. The Chinese have made the hotpot truly their own by using local ingredients that are indigent in the particular region they are from. For example, the Chongqing version makes use of spicy Sichuan peppers while the Manchurian version often tastes a bit sour with the addition of suan cai or Chinese sauerkraut. Have a taste of classic Chinese hotpot dishes with “Chinese Hotpots: Simple and Delicious Authentic Chinese Hot Pot Recipes!” This book will feature 35 simple and easy-to-follow Chinese hotpot recipes, including tips and a bit of history about this unique Chinese dish.

Book excerpt: A new collection on carnival hokum and magical thinking in post-apocalypse America—brought to you by The Baffler. There's never been a better time to be outside the consensus—and if you don't believe it, then peer into these genre-defining essays from The Baffler, the magazine that's been blunting the cutting edge of American culture and politics for a quarter of a century. Here's Thomas Frank on the upward-falling cult of expertise in Washington, D.C., where belonging means getting the major events of our era wrong. Here's Rick Perlstein on direct mail scams, multilevel marketing, and the roots of right-wing lying. Here's John Summers on the illiberal uses of innovation in liberal Cambridge, Massachusetts. And here's David Graeber sensing our disappointment in new technology. (We expected teleportation pods, antigravity sleds, and immortality drugs. We got LinkedIn, which, as Ann Friedman writes here, is an Escher staircase masquerading as a career ladder.) Packed with hilarious, scabrous, up to-the-minute criticism of the American comedy, No Future for You debunks “positive thinking” bromides and business idols. Susan Faludi debunks Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg's phony feminist handbook, Lean In. Evgeny Morozov wrestles “open source” and “Web 2.0” and other pseudorevolutionary meme-making down to the ground. Chris Lehmann writes the obituary of the Washington Post, Barbara Ehrenreich goes searching for the ungood God in Ridley Scott's film Prometheus, Heather Havrilesky reads Fifty Shades of Grey, and Jim Newell investigates the strange and typical case of Adam Wheeler, the student fraud who fooled Harvard and, unlike the real culprits, went to jail. No Future for You offers the counternarrative you've been missing, proof that dissent is alive and well in America. Please be warned, however. The writing that follows is polemical in nature. It may seek to persuade you of something. Copublished with The Baffler. Contributors Chris Bray, Mark Dancey, Barbara Ehrenreich, Susan Faludi, Thomas Frank, Ann Friedman, James Griffioen, David Graeber, A. S. Book excerpt: When a group of social activists arrives in a small town, the lives and beliefs of residents and outsiders alike are upended, in this wry, embracing novel. Big Burr, Kansas, is the kind of place where everyone seems to know everyone, and everyone shares the same values—or keeps their opinions to themselves. But when a national nonprofit labels Big Burr “the most homophobic town in the US” and sends in a task force of queer volunteers as an experiment—they’ll live and work in the community for two years in an attempt to broaden hearts and minds—no one is truly prepared for what will ensue. Furious at being uprooted from her life in Los Angeles and desperate to fit in at her new high school, Avery fears that it’s only a matter of time before her “gay crusader” mom outs her. Still grieving the death of her son, Linda welcomes the arrivals, who know mercifully little about her past. And for Christine, the newcomers are not only a threat to the comforting rhythms of Big Burr life, but a call to action. As tensions roil the town, cratering relationships and forcing closely guarded secrets into the light, everyone must consider what it really means to belong. Told with warmth and wit, Under the Rainbow is a poignant, hopeful articulation of our complicated humanity that reminds us we are more alike than we’d like to admit.

Book excerpt: A memoir in parts, from one of Australia's best-loved playwrights. Hannie Rayson - writer, mother, daughter, sister, wife, romantic, adventuress, parking-spot optimist - has spent a lifetime giving voice to others in the many roles she has written for stage and television. In her new book, she shines the spotlight on herself. This collection of stories from a dramatic life radiate with the great warmth and humour that has made Hannie one of the best-known playwrights in the country. From a childhood in Brighton to a urinary tract infection in Spain, from a body buried under the house to a play on a tram, Hello, Beautiful! captures a life behind the scenes - a life of tender moments, hilarious encounters and, inevitably, drama. Hannie Rayson is a playwright and screenwriter. Her works - including Hotel Sorrento, Inheritance and Life After George - have been performed around Australia and internationally. She has been awarded two Australian Writers' Guild Awards, four Helpmann Awards, two NSW Premier's Literary Awards and a Victorian Premier's Literary Award. Her play Life After George was the first play to be nominated for the Miles Franklin Literary Award. Hannie lives in Melbourne. ‘So beautifully written, so funny, so insightful and so obviously written by a warm and appealing human being.’ David Williamson ‘Smart, witty, warm, self effacing and hilarious. Each chapter is a shining gem—a passionate view, a formative experience, a mortifying anecdote. Hannie Rayson’s insight, honesty and ear for dialogue as one of Australia’s foremost playwrights is beyond dispute. Here she turns her talents to memoir and those closest to her with results so disarming and entertaining I didn’t want it to end.’ Kat Stewart ‘Hannie paints with vivid colours. Her development as a writer and a woman is richly portrayed, with all the shades of intense feeling and emotion that her dramatic characters share spilling from the page in a riot of evocative memories. Hello, Beautiful! is as nourishing and delicious as home-made soup.’ Noni Hazlehurst ‘Hannie’s writing shows the extraordinary truth of ordinary life—that it is, in fact, anything but ordinary. I was glued to this delightful book.’ Sigrid Thornton ‘Think of this as bottled sunshine....her anecdotes about family, friends and the community she belongs to, are told with perfect comic timing and one of the most acute ears in the business for dialogue.’ Caroline Baum, Booktopia Buzz ‘This is a book that welcomes readers generously into its author’s secure and stimulating private world – and makes us wish, as we reluctantly close the final chapter, that we could be there for real.’ Adelaide Advertiser ‘A book of beautifully crafted, free-flowing vignettes that illuminates with warmth and humour.‘ Australian ‘Every chapter tickles.’ Country Living ‘Rayson’s vignettes are perfectly constructed and she is a virtuoso of self-deprecating humour.’ Sydney Morning Herald ‘With her cooly curious eye and facility for dialogue, Rayson has chronicled key moments in the nation’s social history...Hello, Beautiful! is a scrapbook of Rayson’s family foibles, thoughts and simple dreams.’ Big Issue ‘It was a pleasure to read such a refreshing take on the genre of memoir, written with skill, warmth and optimism. Like every good theatrical experience, you are left wanting more.’ Good Reading ‘Beautifully structured and articulated, not to mention hilarious....Rayson reels you in with her storytelling.’ Australian Book Review ‘An easy, entertaining read, written in a chatty, friendly, open style.’ Starts at Sixty

The members gather together for a relaxing hot pot feast…until Jeffery Vue, president of the group, receives a literal shock to his system and dies. Everyone at the meal is a suspect, but the authorities are homing in on family friend Ai Ho, owner of the restaurant where Jeffery was killed—and Yale’s dad is a close second on their list. It’s up to the detecting duo to figure out what really happened before their friends and family have to close their businesses for good.

Book excerpt: During China's late imperial period (roughly 1400-1900 CE), men gathered by the millions every two or three years outside official examination compounds sprinkled across China. Only one percent of candidates would complete the academic regimen that would earn them a post in the administrative bureaucracy. Civil Examinations assesses the role of education, examination, and China's civil service in fostering the world's first professional class based on demonstrated knowledge and skill. Civil examinations were instituted in China in the seventh century CE, but in the Ming and Qing eras they were at the center of a complex social web that held together the intellectual, political, and economic life of imperial China. Local elites and the court sought to influence how the government regulated the classical curriculum and selected civil officials. As a guarantor of educational merit, examinations tied the dynasty to the privileged gentry and literati classes--both ideologically and institutionally. China eliminated its classical examination system in 1905. But this carefully balanced, constantly contested piece of social engineering, worked out over centuries, was an early harbinger of the meritocratic regime of college boards and other entrance exams that undergirds higher education in much of the world today.
