Besonders gut erinnere ich mich heute noch an eine depressive Mutter, die in einer Wohngemeinschaft für psychisch Kranke betreut wurde. Sie ließ sich damals von ihrem Ehemann, der mit den drei jugendlichen Kindern zusammen lebte, scheiden. Eines Tages brachte die Mutter ihre zwölf jährige Tochter mit zum Gruppentreffen. Die Tochter fiel dadurch auf, dass sie kaum sprach und durch ihre Köperhaltung starkes Unbehagen signalisierte. Ihr Verhalten war Anlass zu meiner Überlegung, wie es wäre eine psychisch kranke Mutter zu haben. Als ich mich in ihre Lage versetzte fragte ich mich, ob ihr Verhalten in erster Linie durch Angst, Scham, Verwirrung, Schüchternheit oder Langeweile verursacht war. Bei diesem Gedanken wurde mir bewusst, dass ich die Situation der Kinder von psychisch kranken Elternteilen bisher kaum wahrgenommen hatte. Ich fragte mich, wie viele Kinder mit einem psychisch kranken Elternteil aufwachsen und was das für die betroffenen Kinder bedeutet. Deshalb ist das Erkenntnisinteresse dieser Arbeit auf die Situation der Kinder mit psychisch kranken Elternteilen im Raum Coburg bezogen. Die Relevanz der Themenstellung „die Situation der Kinder von psychisch kranken Eltern“ wird u.a. im Bereich der Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie deutlich. Remschmidt schreibt, dass rund 33% der Kinder, die sich in stationärer kinder- und jugendpsychiatrischer Behandlung befinden, einen psychisch kranken Elternteil haben und rund 12% einen psychotischen Elternteil. Derartige Veröffentlichungen werfen die Vermutung auf psychische Erkrankungen, insbesondere Psychosen, würden von Generation zu Generation weitergeben. Zum Beginn der Arbeit wird deshalb anhand eines Erklärungsmodells für Psychosen untersucht, wodurch der Ausbruch einer Psychose bedingt ist und in welcher Weise die Wahrscheinlichkeit an einer Psychose zu erkranken durch die Genetik festgelegt ist. Insbesondere rückt die Frage ins Forschungsinteresse, ob eine gestörte Eltern-Kind-Beziehung einen Einfluss auf den Ausbruch einer Psychose hat. Dabei ist die Situation der Kinder, die mit psychisch kranken Elternteilen leben, erst neuerdings vermehrt Bestandteil der Fachdiskussion von Sozialpsychiatrie und Jugendhilfe.

Psychosis is a symptom of a disordered brain. Approximately 1 percent of the population worldwide develops schizophrenia during their lifetime. People with schizophrenia often suffer symptoms such as hearing internal voices not heard by others, or believing that other people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them. The current evidence concerning the causes of schizophrenia is a mosaic. It is quite clear that multiple factors are involved. These include changes in the chemistry of the brain, changes in the structure of the brain, and genetic factors. Viral infections and head injuries may also play a role. New molecular tools and modern statistical analyses are allow focusing in on particular genes that might make people more susceptible to schizophrenia by affecting, for example, brain development or neurotransmitter systems governing brain functioning. State-of-the-art imaging techniques are being used to study the living brain. They have recently revealed specific, subtle abnormalities in the structure and function of the brains of patients with schizophrenia. In other imaging studies, early biochemical changes that may precede the onset of disease symptoms have been noted, prompting examination of the neural circuits that are most likely to be involved in producing those symptoms.
