Of all the questions that are asked, however, the one that comes up most frequently and seems to set our program apart from others concerns the ways in which we work with families. To help answer this question we identified what we have found to be the major components in our parent-professional relationships, and we elaborate on these with the most current research informa tion, clinical insights, and community knowledge available through the expertise of our distinguished contributors. Our purpose was to collect the most recent information and to organize the resulting volume along the outlines of the par ent-professional relationship found most important in the TEACCH program. Thus, the four main sections of the book include these four major ways profes sionals work with parents: as their advocates, their trainers, their trainees, and their reciprocal emotional support source. Book excerpt: For several decades, families of children with autism have been of interest to practitioners and researchers, with a growing body of literature focusing specifically on the psychosocial functioning of the healthy siblings in the family. Although there have been mixed findings across existing research studies examining the impact children with autism have on siblings, a number of studies have reported that siblings of children with autism experience greater psychosocial adjustment difficulties, thereby suggesting they are a group at risk for maladjustment. The current study examined the variability in siblings' psychosocial adjustment and prosocial behaviour with factors found to be important in the general population and developmental disability field. Furthermore, factors believed to be more specific to having a brother or sister with autism were explored to help determine those siblings at greater risk for psychosocial adjustment difficulties, in addition to those siblings demonstrating more prosocial behaviours. Participants included 72 siblings of children with autism between ages 7 to 14 years, as well as their parent and classroom teacher. Preliminary analyses confirmed variability in the functioning of siblings of children with autism, although the majority of siblings in the present study appeared to be well-adjusted. A minority of siblings were demonstrating substantial internalizing and/or externalizing behaviour problems, and low levels of prosocial behaviour. An analysis of variables predicting siblings' externalizing behaviour problems revealed different factors emerged as salient for parent versus teacher reports. While siblings were reported by parents to display fewer externalizing behaviour problems in the presence of lower levels of parental distress and higher levels of academic achievement, only siblings' global self-worth emerged as a significant predictor for teacher reports. For autism-specific variables, siblings' perception of the frequency of autistic and related behaviours was an important predictor for both parent and teacher reports of siblings' externalizing behaviour problems. None of the sibling or parent variables examined in the current study predicted parent or teacher reports of siblings' internalizing behaviour problems or prosocial behaviour. These findings are discussed with respect to their clinical implications, and directions for future research are presented.

Book excerpt: The sibling relationship provides a unique context for the development of interpersonal skills and lays the groundwork for extensive social situations with other children. Siblings of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) experience multiple stressors and increased caregiver demands that children with neurotypical siblings do not face. While some siblings do not experience significant adjustment problems, it appears that other children may have greater vulnerability to the development of significant adjustment problems and internalizing disorders. Very few studies have investigated the effect of a support group for children who have a sibling with ASD. The present study evaluated the effects of Project SibSTAR (Straight Talk about Autism Realities), an eight week support group that incorporated didactics, discussion, and role plays while using rigorous research design and psychometrically-sound measures. Twenty siblings of children with ASD were randomized to either the active or delayed intervention group. While the groups received the same intervention, the time-lagged design allowed for the assessment of a multiple baseline design across both groups and skills. In addition, participants reported on measures of psychological and social functioning at baseline, post group, and 6 week follow-up assessments. During these assessment sessions, data were also collected on play-based interactions within the sibling dyad. Outcomes were assessed across a variety of domains, including intervention acceptability, concepts taught during group, play-based behavioral principles, and self-report of internalizing symptoms, self-competence, and perceived social support. Results indicated that participants increased their knowledge of autism, coping and problem solving skills, and their knowledge of behavioral skills. Further, trend level decreases in internalizing symptoms were found from baseline to post group assessment, and significant differences were found on measures of perceived social support and social self-competence. While participants indicated high satisfaction with the intervention package, no significant differences were noted on play-based interactions with their sibling. The implications and future directions of this line of research are discussed.

Book excerpt: As siblings play an important role in one another's cognitive, affective, behavioral, and social development, the sibling relationship is an important subsystem within the family unit. However, in families where one child has an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, the dynamics between family members may be different due to the associated deficits in communication. Therefore, the purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the perceptions of six typically developing children with a sibling with autism and their parents. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used for both parents and the typically developing child, which allowed for an in-depth investigation into the sibling relationship. Identification of major themes followed by focused coding was conducted in order to capture the essence of what was said and to categorize the most frequent themes. Overall, both parents and typically developing children had positive and negative things to say about the relationship. Additionally, typically developing children seem to be at a loss for coping strategies that they consider helpful, perhaps due to their own poor emotional regulation skills. This study emphasizes the need to support typically developing children and their development, as well as parents. Parents also identified other themes beyond the sibling relationship such as the perceived poor quality of public services received, the school experience, and their reactions towards the diagnosis.

This volume will have heuristic value in stimulating researchers to think in new ways about the interactions between heredity, shared and nonshared environment and the challenges in identifying their contributions to sibling differences. These papers should raise new questions about how to examine the contributions of genetic and environmental factors to development, with consideration given to the findings of this study of sibling differences and nonshared environment.
