Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of the Salem Witchcraft Excitement of 1692: And Its Practical Application to Our Own Time A few years since, I was walking the streets of Salem, in company with a friend who showed me the relics of witchcraft days in 1692, and pointed out the spot where - as is believed - the innocent victims were executed - in the name of religion and under the forms of law - for the protection of society. It was while studying these bloody object lessons of history that I formed a resolution to search out and solve, if might be, the psychological problems that were the basis of that delusion; and to present the solution in such a way that it should be at once an original contribution to science and a practical guide for the present and the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century was a time of extraordinary scientific innovation, but with the rise of psychiatry, faiths and popular beliefs were often seen as signs of a diseased mind. By exploring the beliefs of asylum patients, we see the nineteenth century in a new light, with science, faith, and the supernatural deeply entangled in a fast-changing world. The birth of psychiatry in the early nineteenth-century fundamentally changed how madness was categorised and understood. A century on, their conceptions of mental illness continue to influence our views today. Beliefs and behaviour were divided up into the pathological and the healthy. The influence of religion and the supernatural became significant measures of insanity in individuals, countries, and cultures. Psychiatrists not only thought they could transform society in the industrial age but also explain the many strange beliefs expressed in the distant past. Troubled by Faith explores these ideas about the supernatural across society through the prism of medical history. It is a story of how people continued to make sense of the world in supernatural terms, and how belief came to be a medical issue. This cannot be done without exploring the lives of those who found themselves in asylums because of their belief in ghosts, witches, angels, devils, and fairies, or because they though themselves in divine communication, or were haunted by modern technology. The beliefs expressed by asylum patients were not just an expression of their individual mental health, but also provide a unique reflection of society at the time - a world still steeped in the ideas and imagery of folklore and faith in a fast-changing world.

Book Synopsis Witchcraft Myths in American Culture by : Marion Gibson
Download or read book Witchcraft Myths in American Culture written by Marion Gibson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating examination of how Americans think about and write about witches, from the 'real' witches tried and sometimes executed in early New England to modern re-imaginings of witches as pagan priestesses, comic-strip heroines and feminist icons. The first half of the book is a thorough re-reading of the original documents describing witchcraft prosecutions from 1640-1700 and a re-thinking of these sources as far less coherent and trustworthy than most historians have considered them to be. The second half of the book examines how these historical narratives have transformed into myths of witchcraft still current in American society, writing and visual culture. The discussion includes references to everything from Increase Mather and Edgar Allan Poe to Joss Whedon (the writer/director of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which includes a Wiccan character) and The Blair Witch Project.
