Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology of Education This book is a systematic treatise neither on psychology nor on education. It endeavours to set forth the rela tion between them. This relation must be found in the actual lives Of individual children, and it is to help people engaged in education to study those lives that I have written. I have endeavoured to keep as free as possible from technicalities, and throughout to deal with life as a developing whole. Though the treat ment is psychological, the selection of topics has been determined by educational considerations. The end sought is a presentation of the general form in which efficiency of life develops through ever-extending pur poses. The various human faculties are regarded as factors inter - mingled, in an indefinitely large variety of ways, in every piece Of life, and are, therefore, not considered apart and in themselves. Similarly, little or nothing is said of elements of experience which are merely constituent of fuller forms Of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Learning: An Advance d104 in Educational Psychology In this book I have tried to state every thing that is known about learning. All the experimental work that throws any light on the nature of learning has been carefully examined, and in the light of the experimental results I have endeavored to give the present impartial verdict of educational psychology. Throughout, I have tried to keep within the facts. When the evidence does not warrant a definite conclusion, I say so. The few cases of theory and speculation are plainly labeled as such. The practical significance to the teacher of the facts discussed is pointed out. The successful use of this book will depend upon two things: first, experimentation; and second, application. Educational psychology is an experimental science. All its facts come from experimentation and careful observation. These facts, whenever possible, should be demonstrated or illustrated by class room demonstrations and experiments, or by experiments and observations outside the class room. Directions for demonstrations will be found throughout the book, but the teacher must use his own ingenuity in adapting the experiments to his needs and in devising others. And always, the facts must be carried over to their practical application. The students must see the source of the facts and the use of the facts in teaching. The book contains many tables and figures. The mastery of the book will depend upon an understanding of the meaning and significance of the tables and graphs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach The art of teaching is based primarily upon the science of psychology. In this book the authors have sought to make clear the principles of psychology which are involved in teaching, and to show definitely their application in the work of the classroom. The book has been written in language as free from technical terms as is possible. In a discussion of the methods of teaching it is necessary to consider the ends or aims involved, as well as the process. The authors have, on this account, included a chapter on the work of the teacher, in which is discussed the aims of education. The success or failure of the work of a teacher is determined by the changes which are brought to pass in the children who are being taught. This book, therefore, includes a chapter on the measurement of the achievements of children. Throughout the book the discussion of the art of teaching is always modified by an acceptance upon the part of the writers of the social purpose of education. The treatment of each topic will be found to be based upon investigations and researches in the fields of psychology and education which involve the measurement of the achievements of children and of adults under varying conditions. Wherever possible, the relation between the principle of teaching laid down and the scientific inquiry upon which it is based is indicated. Any careful study of the mental life and development of children reveals at the same time the unity and the diversity of the process involved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind and Its Education This book is intended as an introduction to psychology for teachers, both in their private study and their Reading Circle classes, for students in secondary schools, normal schools or colleges, and for general readers. Its appearance is an immediate outgrowth of various courses of lectures on psychology and education given to teachers and elementary students in education. More remotely, it owes its origin to a suggestion received from Prof. John Dewey when the writer was a student in his classes. Said Professor Dewey: "The teacher is equally under the necessity of knowing each of the two factors in the educational process - culture and the child; that is, subject-matter and psychology - not the technicalities and controversial points of psychology, but its broad and fundamental truths, upon which practically all are agreed, and which, fortunately, are simple and easily understood." This statement furnishes the standpoint, in the following pages, for both subject-matter and method of treatment. First, the attempt has been made to present only fundamental truths, which, let us be thankful, are but little subject to controversy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Psychology of Education The same kind of remark falls to be made with respect to the attitude taken up by some Of the American behaviour ists with regard to all psychologists who refuse to sub scribe to the View that experimental and Objective study Of behaviour - mental testing and the like - is the only basis for a psychology Of education. Again the immense services rendered to psychology by these workers in America is undeniable, but Let rival schools of philosophy fling stones at one another as they choose. Workers in different fields of science can find a better use for their time and energy. In two respects the present work marks some advance in the author's position from that represented in I nstz'nct in Man. On the one hand, the attitude towards behaviourism has become somewhat more sympathetic, though without surrendering what appear to be the key positions. On the other hand, his views regarding the nature of suggestion have become more clearly defined. He is very sensible of the defects of the work, but the life of a teacher of psychology in a British university is at the moment a very busy one, and he might plead this fact as some excuse for the defects, unless they are too grave to be covered by such an excuse. He has at least attempted to work out a general point of view from which it is possible to see the different develop ments of a psychology of education in their mutual relations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychological Principles of Education: A Study in the Science of Education Progress in every art dates from the application of science. Chemistry widens industry, physics perfects means of communication, bacteriology advances medicine, sociology humanizes jurisprudence, economics elevates business, scholarship revivifies Biblical truth. The old professions of law, theology, and medicine grounded themselves in science during the mediaeval period. Business and teaching, though arts as old as man, have not yet struck into the sure path of science. There are many indications, however, that these arts also are now in the act of transition from the empirical to the scientific. The period of transition has already lasted a generation; it is likely to last several more. This volume attempts to lay scientific foundations for the art of teaching, so far as those foundations are concerned with psychology. Though the art of education is founded in all the sciences of man, probably no science has quite so much to contribute as psychology. The wonderful progress in all departments of psychology during recent years makes an outline map of consciousness now possible.
