Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IRVING E. SIGEL This volume of essays is a broad-gauged effort directed at reflections on the applicability of Piagetian theory to education. Identification and de termination of the relevance of Piagetian theory to education is of course not new. The bibliographies in this volume do attest to that assertion. Then why the persistent interest and why still another volume? Rather than deal with the relevance of each article to these issues, let us deal with the basic question of why such continued interest in application of Piagetian theory to education, and further raise the problem of the feasi bility of such a task. Three questions come immediately to mind: Why the interest in applicability? What are some of the problems that arise in application? Is Piagetian theory applicable to education? Why the continued interest in application of Piagetian theory in education? The answer to this question resides in the sociological and educational issues that arose twenty years ago and still persist in American education-namely, the need to upgrade the quality of education by providing a coherent conceptual system with a developmental em phasis. People gravitated to Pia get because it was the only major system sufficiently comprehensive, as well as substantive. While learning theories abound, they do not tie together general cognitive development with specific relevant content areas, e. g. , development of such knowl edge domains as number, time, space, geometry, etc. Thus, Piaget offers a development framework within which content areas are embedded.

It is a tribute to those two authors as well as to the entire Geneva school that pioneered the genetic study of cognitive structures in children. Dealing with the process of the child's construction of the notion of number -- a very important subject for the child as well as for the teacher, the researcher, and the practicing psychologist -- it summarizes the progress that has been made and outlines new research directions in this area. The book is a compilation of the work of the foremost international researchers in this area and includes a wide spectrum of viewpoints and schools of thought. It also introduces several new authors from Europe, including students of Piaget, to the American academic community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the tumultuous and even passionate relationship between New Education and Educational Sciences, which are regarded as an inseparable «couple», intrinsically linked and surprisingly fruitful. Yet they remain irreconcilable and are mutually contradictory in a number of their elements and characteristics. Do Educational Sciences offer a scientific base or ideological support for New Education? Do the numerous new educational initiatives and reforms provide a «laboratory» for Educational Sciences or alternatives to the new scientific paradigms? Is this at the risk of their merging? And what is the price of these tensions? Specialists in the history of Educational Sciences and New Education from various geographical, cultural and disciplinary horizons explore the complex links between this powerful reforming movement and the nascent disciplinary field that emerged during the first half of the 20th century.

Book excerpt: The contributions in this volume reflect the high level of research currently under way in many parts of the world in the area of developmental psychology, with ten countries from five continents represented in the book. The volume shows the extent to which theorizing and research is currently focused on different portions of the life span. The 40 chapters in this book provide a broad and complementary coverage of many domains of contemporary psychological development from infancy to senescence. Results of several major longitudinal studies complement the cross-sectional ones. Consistent with the field, much of the book pertains to social, cognitive and emotional development during the beginning of the life span. The remaining chapters demonstrate that development continues well beyond childhood where Havighurst's notion of life tasks provides cohesion on such topics as: Adolescent identity, inter-generational relations, options in early adulthood concerning career and family development, cognitive ageing and its interface with everyday functioning. Life span themes of the contextual, multidimensional, multidirectional and plastic nature of development are pervasive.

This volume provides an interpretation of the Chicago school through constructive critique of its doctrines. It is an inquiry into the nature, role, and significance of the school and its doctrines within both the economics profession and the larger world of ideas and action. This volume offers a deeper understanding of the school, of its strengths and weaknesses, and of the tasks of any body of thought that hopes to comprise an alternative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improve your confidence in the validity of your test results! Detection of Response Bias in Forensic Neuropsychology examines strategies and procedures for determining the validity of results and the patient's motivation during neuropsychological testing. The book discusses procedures to help a clinician assess factors that can affect test accuracy. Developers and researchers present unique insights into each strategy's utility in clinical practice and each procedure's performance in light of factors defined by the United States Supreme Court. Detection of Response Bias in Forensic Neuropsychology examines the increasing need for practicing clinical neuropsychologists to identify response bias in their evaluations of a patient's neuropsychological impairment. The book presents major response bias detection strategies, addressing in each: whether the theory or technique has been tested; if it has been subjected to peer review and publication; the known or potential rate of error in applying the method; and to what extent the method has been accepted by the relevant scientific community. Each strategy represents a logical, scientific approach in forensic settings that can be applied in neuropsychological assessments. Detection of Response Bias in Forensic Neuropsychology includes comprehensive reviews of current procedures in wide usage to evaluate the validity of test results. Procedures covered include: Portland Digit Recognition Test Computerized Assessment of Response Bias (CARB) Warrington Recognition Memory Test Halstead-Reitan Battery Rey's strategies for detecting malingering validity scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) Victoria Symptom Validity Test (VSVT) Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) Word Memory Test (WMT) Category Test validity indicators much more! Detection of Response Bias in Forensic Neuropsychology is an essential resource for forensic professionals in determining patient compliance and motivation during testing.
