Download or read book Materiality and Space written by Nathalie Mitev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-08-09 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materiality and Space focuses on how organizations and managing are bound with the material forms and spaces through which humans act and interact at work. It concentrates on organizational practices and pulls together three separate domains that are rarely looked at together: sociomateriality, sociology of space, and social studies of technology. The contributions draw on and combine several of these domains, and propose analyses of spaces and materiality in a range of organizational practices such as collaborative workspaces, media work, urban management, e-learning environments, managerial control, mobile lives, institutional routines and professional identity. Theoretical insights are also developed by Pickering on the material world, Lyytinen on affordance, Lorino on architexture and Introna on sociomaterial assemblages in order to delve further into conceptualizing materiality in organizations.

Book Synopsis Cross-Cultural Management by : Jean-François Chanlat
Download or read book Cross-Cultural Management written by Jean-François Chanlat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All cultures appear to share the belief that they do things ‘correctly’, while others, until proven otherwise, are assumed to be ignorant or barbaric. When people from different cultures work together and cannot take shared meanings for granted, managers face serious challenges. An individual’s parsing of an experience and its meaning may vary according to several cultural scales – national, professional, industrial and local. Awareness of cultural differences and the willingness to view them as a positive are therefore crucial assets. This edited textbook sets itself apart from existing cross-cultural management texts by highlighting to the reader the need to avoid both ethnocentrism and the belief in the universality of his or her own values and ways of thinking: the success of international negotiations and intercultural management depends on such openness and acceptance of real differences. It encourages the development of ‘nomadic intelligence’ and the creative use of a culture’s resources, according to a symbolic anthropology perspective. Through the essays and case studies in the chapters, readers will become aware of the intercultural dimension of business activities and better understand how they affect work. Cross-Cultural Management will help interested parties – students of business management, international relations and other disciplines, and business managers and other professionals – develop their ability to interact, take action and give direction in an intercultural context.

Book Synopsis Routledge Revivals: Towards a New Theory of Organizations (1994) by : John Hassard
Download or read book Routledge Revivals: Towards a New Theory of Organizations (1994) written by John Hassard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994, the essays collected in this book explore the impact and current status of the ideas put forth in David Silverman’s The Theory of Organizations, and how they relate to future directions in organization theory. After opening with a chapter by Silverman himself, the subsequent chapters investigate key issues in the study of organizations, including structure and agency, the politics of organization theory, and the meanings of post-positivist organizational analysis. Contemporaneous debates on postmodernism, the emotions, gender and structuration are discussed in the context of the development of organizational theory in the preceding twenty-five years — providing insights into the continuities within organizational theory and provoking thought about future directions.
Book Synopsis French and Other Perspectives in Praxiology by : Wojciech W. Gasparski
Download or read book French and Other Perspectives in Praxiology written by Wojciech W. Gasparski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 12 in this distinguished series explores current topics in praxiology as studied in France and elsewhere. As is characteristic of contemporary praxiology, contributors both investigate new topics and use new methods to re-examine older approaches.Part 1 is composed of three sections by French scholars. These deal with humans as a subject of action as well as a subject of knowledge. In respecting the particular domains of psychology and praxiology, they demonstrate how they converge to shed light on the human being as an individual or as part of a group. The first section discusses relations between individual action and collective action, while the second section is concerned with relations between the act, objects, and space, and explores work spaces, production spaces, office spaces, and social spaces. The third section examines relations between action and cognition, a domain considered to be little understood in general. Finally, the role of mathematics in decision-making is discussed as a determinate of the praxiological process. The second part is composed of contributions by scholars from Finland, Great Britain, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the United States. The topics are: how praxiology helps economists understand cooperative actions and related issues of different responsibilities; how and to what an extent university education creates conditions for competitive advantage in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and how problems of corporate governance are approached in the region; how innovation influences competence in the region of established economy in Spain; and how information systems constitute a multi-agent system. Finally, a formal analysis of praxiological dimensions in light of the fuzzy logic approach is discussed.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Environmental Psychology and Quality of Life Research by : Ghozlane Fleury-Bahi
Download or read book Handbook of Environmental Psychology and Quality of Life Research written by Ghozlane Fleury-Bahi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook presents a broad overview of the current research carried out in environmental psychology which puts into perspective quality of life and relationships with living spaces, and shows how this original analytical framework can be used to understand different environmental and societal issues. Adopting an original approach, this Handbook focuses on the links with other specialties in psychology, especially social and health psychology, together with other disciplines such as geography, architecture, sociology, anthropology, urbanism and engineering. Faced with the problems of society which involve the quality of life of individuals and communities, it is fundamental to consider the relationships an individual has with his different living spaces. This issue of the links between quality of life and environment is becoming increasingly significant with, at a local level, problems resulting from different types of annoyances, such as pollution and noise, while, at a global level, there is the central question of climate change with its harmful consequences for humans and the planet. How can the impact on well-being of environmental nuisances and threats (for example, natural risks, pollution, and noise) be reduced? How can the quality of life within daily living spaces (home, cities, work environments) be improved? Why is it important to understand the psychological issues of our relationship with the global environment (climatic warming, ecological behaviours)? This Handbook is intended not only for students of various disciplines (geography, architecture, psychology, town planning, etc.) but also for social decision-makers and players who will find in it both theoretical and methodological perspectives, so that psychological and environmental dimensions can be better taken into account in their working practices.

This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES AND HUMAN RESOURCES SET Coordinated by Patrick Gilbert The accelerating pace of technological change (AI, cobots, immersive reality, connected objects, etc.) calls for a profound reexamination of how we conduct business. This requires new ways of thinking, acting, organizing and collaborating in our work. Faced with these challenges, the Human and Social Sciences have a leading role to play, alongside others, in designing, supporting and implementing these digital transformation projects. Their ambition is to participate in the development of innovative and empowering devices, that is to say, systems that are truly at the service of human beings and their activity, that empower these professionals to take action and that also provide occupational health services. This book takes a multidisciplinary look at the challenges of these digital transformations, making use of occupational psychology, ergonomics, sociology of uses, and management sciences. This viewpoint also helps provide epistemological, methodological and empirical insights to better understand and support the changes at work.

Download or read book Global Ergonomics written by P.A. Scott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 971 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jointly hosted by the Ergonomics Society of South Africa (ESSA) and the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), this conference was attended by over 300 delegates and represented the largest and most prestigious gathering of eminent international ergonomists in the history of Africa. It also marked the beginning of a revival in concern for the well-being and productivity of people at work in South Africa. The conference aimed to juxtapose two great ergonomic themes – the under-developed ethos of the affluent societies and the technologically advanced ethos of the most affluent societies. The structure of the proceedings reflects this with the first section addressing the priorities of countries in transition and the last section addressing the priorities of the most industrially-developed countries, who have, by and large, long since solved the sorts of ergonomics problems currently of concern in the under-developed world. In between these, in a roughly hierarchical arrangement from micro- to macro- levels of analysis, are sections which collectively help span the whole field of ergonomics. Section overviews are provided to outline the topics included in each section.
