The book is structured to aid students in developing their own personal consultation model as they work through the book. The author provides a culturally sensitive generic application model that students can use to survey various approaches to consultation, examine the organizational context of consultation, and review the numerous ethical and professional challenges that consultants face as they deliver their services. New case studies bring concepts to life and help students learn how to deliver services most effectively. Updated throughout, this edition includes new content aligned with CACREP and other standards, an increased focus on school-based consultation, new material on cultural diversity, advocacy, social justice, prevention, systems theory, and ecological variables as they affect consultation and collaboration in counseling and psychology, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School consultation is a process for providing psychological and educational services in which a specialist (consultant) works cooperatively with a staff member (consultee) to improve the learning and adjustment of a student (client) or a group of students. During face-to-face interactions, the consultant helps the consultee through systematic problem solving, social influence, and professional support. In turn, the consultee helps the client by selecting, implementing, and evaluating school-based interventions. In all cases, school consultation serves a remedial function and has the potential to serve a preventive function. In this volume, the authors offer a systematic approach to school consultation that differs from those that have been published previously. Specifically, the authors combine the most useful and/or empirically validated principles from mental health and behavioral consultation with practices shown to be effective in contemporary consultation research (i.e. behavior analysis, social influence, and implementation support). In so doing, the authors describe for the first-time consultant when and how to apply these principles in response to a wide range of consultee and client needs, and offer a thorough discussion of the realities inherent in providing services within a school organizational context. This second edition also includes expanded coverage on the following topics:-implications of the 1997 IDEA Amendments for school consultation; -empirically validated approaches to the support and development task; -methods for conducting a functional behavioral assessment; -a listing of instructional interventions; -teacher shortage, recruitment and retention issues; -prereferral intervention teams and programs; -strategies to increase teacher skill transfer and maintenance; and -inclusion of new research studies that inform the effective practice of school consultation.

Book excerpt: This guidebook has been developed as a skill-training package to teach psychologists, counselors, social workers, and other applied mental-health professionals a model for the delivery of behavioral interventions through a behavioral consultation approach. This train ing guide is an abridged version of the skills taught as part of a behavioral consultation model. As such it is not intended to be an exhaustive program in behavioral consultation. Usually, consultation skills are taught over a period of several months in university training programs. Also, the most successful use of the guidebook can be accom plished only with prerequisite training in behavioral analysis and assessment as a method of delivering psychological services. Thus, individuals using this guidebook should obtain supervised training in this area. The book is also designed to accompany Bergan and Kratochwill (1990). Some individuals may have a background in behavioral assess ment and intervention. In this case, the use of this guidebook can provide the user who has not been exposed to the specifics of the behavioral consultation approach valuable information regarding in terviewing forms of assessment and intervention. Such activities can be extremely useful when incorporated into regular clinical work in applied settings and supplemented with other assessment and inter vention methods. Given the importance of successful interviewing in applied settings, a major clinical tool should be available after careful study of this guidebook.

Book excerpt: I have spent the best part of the last quarter of a century working on the con sultation service at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Much of my satisfaction has stemmed from working with nonpsychiatric physicians, especially in having them come to realize the value of psychological methods in the treatment of their patients. It has always been my belief that learning to understand the patient's mental life was as much a part of medicine as the taking of vital signs. To treat adequately, certainly to treat well, a physician must know something of his patient's thought processes. Teaching others the value of this knowledge is the first step in educating them to seek ways of learning it themselves. Rarely can this be done in the lecture hall. One can best pique curiosity by demon strating worth, and that is done at the bedside or in whatever setting the con sultation is carried out. Every consultation then carries an implicit imperative to attest its value. It can be covert teaching at its best. I have found the practice of consultation psychiatry satisfying and compelling enough to want to remain in it for at least another quarter of a century .

They detail a logical process for critiquing the evaluation reports of others and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of a case.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two decades, I have been responding to questions about the nature of health psychology and how it differs from medical psychology, behavioral medicine, and clinical psychology. From the beginning, I have taken the position that any applica tion of psychological theory or practice to problems and issues of the health system is health psychology. I have repeatedly used an analogy to Newell and Simon's "General Problem Solver" program of the late 1950s and early 1960s, which had two major functional parts, in addition to the "executive" component. One was the "problem-solving core" (the procedural competence); the other was the representa tion of the "problem environment. " In the analogy, the concepts, knowledge, and techniques of psychology constitute the core competence; the health system in all its complexity is the problem environment. A health psychologist is one whose basic competence in psychology is augmented by a working knowledge of some aspect of the health system. Quite apparently, there are functionally distinct aspects of health psychology to the degree that there are meaningful subdivisions in psychological competence and significantly different microenvironments within the health system. I hesitate to refer to them as areas of specialization, as the man who gave health psychology its formal definition, Joseph Matarazzo, has said that there are no specialties in psychology (cited in the editors' preface to this book).
