Book excerpt: Electronics: Basic, Analog, and Digital with PSpice does more than just make unsubstantiated assertions about electronics. Compared to most current textbooks on the subject, it pays significantly more attention to essential basic electronics and the underlying theory of semiconductors. In discussing electrical conduction in semiconductors, the author addresses the important but often ignored fundamental and unifying concept of electrochemical potential of current carriers, which is also an instructive link between semiconductor and ionic systems at a time when electrical engineering students are increasingly being exposed to biological systems. The text presents the background and tools necessary for at least a qualitative understanding of new and projected advances in microelectronics. The author provides helpful PSpice simulations and associated procedures (based on schematic capture, and using OrCAD® 16.0 Demo software), which are available for download. These simulations are explained in considerable detail and integrated throughout the book. The book also includes practical, real-world examples, problems, and other supplementary material, which helps to demystify concepts and relations that many books usually state as facts without offering at least some plausible explanation. With its focus on fundamental physical concepts and thorough exploration of the behavior of semiconductors, this book enables readers to better understand how electronic devices function and how they are used. The book’s foreword briefly reviews the history of electronics and its impact in today’s world. ***Classroom Presentations are provided on the CRC Press website. Their inclusion eliminates the need for instructors to prepare lecture notes. The files can be modified as may be desired, projected in the classroom or lecture hall, and used as a basis for discussing the course material.***

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PSpice for Circuit Theory and Electronic Devices is one of a series of five PSpice books and introduces the latest Cadence Orcad PSpice version 10.5 by simulating a range of DC and AC exercises. It is aimed primarily at those wishing to get up to speed with this version but will be of use to high school students, undergraduate students, and of course, lecturers. Circuit theorems are applied to a range of circuits and the calculations by hand after analysis are then compared to the simulated results. The Laplace transform and the s-plane are used to analyze CR and LR circuits where transient signals are involved. Here, the Probe output graphs demonstrate what a great learning tool PSpice is by providing the reader with a visual verification of any theoretical calculations. Series and parallel-tuned resonant circuits are investigated where the difficult concepts of dynamic impedance and selectivity are best understood by sweeping different circuit parameters through a range of values. Obtaining semiconductor device characteristics as a laboratory exercise has fallen out of favour of late, but nevertheless, is still a useful exercise for understanding or modelling semiconductor devices. Inverting and non-inverting operational amplifiers characteristics such as gain-bandwidth are investigated and we will see the dependency of bandwidth on the gain using the performance analysis facility. Power amplifiers are examined where PSpice/Probe demonstrates very nicely the problems of cross-over distortion and other problems associated with power transistors. We examine power supplies and the problems of regulation, ground bounce, and power factor correction. Lastly, we look at MOSFET device characteristics and show how these devices are used to form basic CMOS logic gates such as NAND and NOR gates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the European Workshop on Microelectronics Education (EWME). A steady-state regime has now been reached. An international community of university teachers is constituted; they exchange their experience and their pedagogical tools. They discuss the best ways to transfer the rapidly changing techniques to their students, and to introduce them to the new physical and mathematical concepts and models for the innovative techniques, devices, circuits and design methods. The number of abstracts submitted to EWME 2000 (about one hundred) enabled the scientific committee to proceed to a clear selection. EWME is a European meeting. Indeed, authors from 20 different European countries contribute to this volume. Nevertheless, the participation of authors from Brazil, Canada, China, New Zealand, and USA, shows that the workshop gradually attains an international dimension. th The 20 century can be characterized as the "century of electron". The electron, as an elementary particle, was discovered by J.J. Thomson in 1897, and was rapidly used to transfer energy and information. Thanks to electron, universe and micro-cosmos could be explored. Electron became the omnipotent and omnipresent, almost immaterial, angel of our W orId. This was made possible thanks to electronics and, for the last 30 years, to microelectronics. Microelectronics not only modified and even radically transformed the industrial and the every-day landscapes, but it also led to the so-called "information revolution" with which begins the 21 st century.

Book excerpt: In many cases, new designers of electronic circuits blindly search for ways to improve the design itself using a brute-force, hit-and-miss approach. The intention of this book is to avoid this pitfall by teaching readers what not to do with SPICE. This is accomplished by keying each example in this text to those presented in Sedra and Smith's Microelectronic Circuits 3/E, where a complete hand analysis is provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MICROELECTRONIC CIRCUITS: ANALYSIS AND DESIGN combines a breadth-first approach to teaching electronics with a strong emphasis on electronics design and simulation. Professor Rashid first introduces students to the general characteristics of circuits (ICs) to prepare them for the use of circuit design and analysis techniques. He then moves on to a more detailed study of devices and circuits and how they operate within ICs. This approach makes the text easily adaptable to both one- and two-term electronics courses. Student's gain a strong systems perspective, and can readily fill in device-level detail as the course (and their job) requires. In addition, Rashid, author of five successful texts on PSpice and power electronics, directly addresses student's needs for applying theory to real-world design problems by mastering the use of PSpice for testing and verifying their designs. More than 50% of the problems and examples in the text concentrate on design, with PSpice used extensively in the design problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microelectronics is the cornerstone of the information technologies that pervade virtually every aspect of contemporary life. It is difficult to imagine any field of science or technology that has had a more profound impact on the latter half of the 20 century than microelectronics. Microelectronics industry has been able to provide transistors, chips and products that are becoming smaller, faster, cheaper and better every year. As transistors become smaller, they become faster, more and more of such transistors can be packed on a chip, and thus chips are able to store and process more information. Digital circuits are made from analog components. The design must assure that the analog nature of the components doesn't dominate the desired digital behaviour. Digital systems must manage noise and timing margins, parasitic inductances and capacitances, and filter power connections. Bad designs have intermittent problems such as "e;glitches"e;, vanishingly-fast pulses that may trigger some logic but not others, "e;runt pulses"e; that do not reach valid "e;threshold"e; voltages, or unexpected ("e;undecoded"e;) combinations of logic states. A digital circuit is often constructed from small electronic circuits called logic gates that can be used to create combinational logic. Each logic gate represents a function of boolean logic. A logic gate is an arrangement of electrically controlled switches, better known as transistors. Each logic symbol is represented by a different shape. This book is designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students with background knowledge in basic electronics including biasing, modeling, circuit, analysis, and frequency response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appropriate as a supplement for undergraduate Electronic courses such as Operational Amplifiers, Digital, Analog, and Filter Design. Volume 2 picks up where PSpice for Windows, Vol. 1 left off and assumes that students have a working knowledge of basic PSpice techniques. It continues simulation studies with more advanced topics such as operational amplifiers, digital, and filter design. "Comfortable" yet challenging, the text shows students how to use the program to draw circuits directly on the screen, analyze the circuit in seconds using PSpice, and display the results using sophisticated techniques that go far beyond those possible with conventional instruments.
