Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an account of the present state of the art in pseudoperiodic topology--a young branch of mathematics, born at the boundary between the ergodic theory of dynamical systems, topology, and number theory. Related topics include the theory of algorithms, convex integer polyhedra, Morse inequalities, real algebraic geometry, statistical physics, and algebraic number theory. The book contains many new results. Most of the articles contain brief surveys on the topics, making the volume accessible to a broad audience. From the Preface by V.I. Arnold: "The authors ... have done much to show how modern mathematics begets, from this sea of pathological counterexamples, remarkable general and universal laws, whose discovery would be unthinkable and whose formulation would be impossible in the naive set-theoretical setting."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an introduction to the fascinating field of the topology, geometry and dynamics of closed one-forms. The subject was initiated by S. P. Novikov in 1981 as a study of Morse type zeros of closed one-forms. The first two chapters of the book, written in textbook style, give a detailed exposition of Novikov theory, which plays a fundamental role in geometry and topology. Subsequent chapters of the book present a variety of topics where closed one-forms play a central role. The most significant results are the following: the solution of the problem of exactness of the Novikov inequalities for manifolds with the infinite cyclic fundamental group; the solution of a problem raised by E. Calabi about intrinsically harmonic closed one-forms and their Morse numbers; and, the construction of a universal chain complex which bridges the topology of the underlying manifold with information about zeros of closed one-forms.This complex implies many interesting inequalities including Bott-type inequalities, equivariant inequalities, and inequalities involving von Neumann Betti numbers. The construction of a novel Lusternik-Schnirelman-type theory for dynamical systems. Closed one-forms appear in dynamics through the concept of a Lyapunov one-form of a flow. As is shown in the book, homotopy theory may be used to predict the existence of homoclinic orbits and homoclinic cycles in dynamical systems ('focusing effect').

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vladimir Arnold, an eminent mathematician of our time, is known both for his mathematical results, which are many and prominent, and for his strong opinions, often expressed in an uncompromising and provoking manner. His dictum that "Mathematics is a part of physics where experiments are cheap" is well known. This book consists of two parts: selected articles by and an interview with Vladimir Arnold, and a collection of articles about him written by his friends, colleagues, and students. The book is generously illustrated by a large collection of photographs, some never before published. The book presents many a facet of this extraordinary mathematician and man, from his mathematical discoveries to his daredevil outdoor adventures.

Rokhlin (1919-1984). It is a collection of research papers written by his former students and followers, who are now experts in their fields. The topics in this volume include topology (the Morse-Novikov theory, spin bordisms in dimension 6, and skein modules of links), real algebraic geometry (real algebraic curves, plane algebraic surfaces, algebraic links, and complex orientations), dynamics (ergodicity, amenability, and random bundle transformations), geometry of Riemannian manifolds, theory of Teichmuller spaces, measure theory, etc. The book also includes a biography of Rokhlin by Vershik and two articles which should prove of historical interest.

Book excerpt: Mark Vishik's Partial Differential Equations seminar held at Moscow State University was one of the world's leading seminars in PDEs for over 40 years. This book celebrates Vishik's eightieth birthday. It comprises new results and survey papers written by many renowned specialists who actively participated over the years in Vishik's seminars. Contributions include original developments and methods in PDEs and related fields, such as mathematical physics, tomography, and symplecticgeometry. Papers discuss linear and nonlinear equations, particularly linear elliptic problems in angles and general unbounded domains, linear elliptic problems with a parameter for mixed order systems, infinite-dimensional Schrodinger equations, Navier-Stokes equations, and nonlinear Maxwellequations. The book ends on a historical note with a paper about Vishik's seminar as a whole and a list of selected talks given from 1964 through 1989. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical physics.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of the book is to acquaint mathematicians, physicists and engineers with classical mechanics as a whole, in both its traditional and its contemporary aspects. As such, it describes the fundamental principles, problems, and methods of classical mechanics, with the emphasis firmly laid on the working apparatus, rather than the physical foundations or applications. Chapters cover the n-body problem, symmetry groups of mechanical systems and the corresponding conservation laws, the problem of the integrability of the equations of motion, the theory of oscillations and perturbation theory.
