Book excerpt: This month has been an experience, which began with 10 uniforms, 8 surrounding me with guns, a sick dying chicken and I ask myself the question, how do you soar like an eagle? I was then informed by police to 'Step away from the Chicken!' I spent the next 32 days locked up, drugged many times, room was raided four times, was strangled once and experienced an inland Tsunami! During this experience, I was physically beaten, emotionally constipated, spiritually raped and mentally flipped inside out. But I managed to write down everything on Facebook every few days to my family and friends at home and that's how this story was written! Keep fighting the good fight people!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the theory and practice of Biblical interpretation by engaging in an interpretation of Psalm 24 inspired by a particular understanding of Brevard Childs' “canonical approach”: an understanding centred on the concept of “theological substance.” Sumpter shows how the literary, historical, and theological dimensions of Psalm 24 cohere into a single vision by reading the text according to the previously discussed dialectic. An initial “synchronic” analysis of the psalm's poetic structure related to a “diachronic” reconstruction of the tradition history that lead to the final form. The question is then posed concerning the primary forces at work in this history of composition, a question which leads to reflection on the Trinity, first in se and then pro nobis. This latter dimension takes us back to the text, as its “Davidic” nature is further analysed in relation to the books of Samuel, the Psalter, and Isaiah. Finally, Patristic exegesis is turned to for further stimulation concerning the mysterious subject matter of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a literary-critical analysis of the myth of Cain and Abel, masterfully related in Genesis 4 by the Yahwist, probably the greatest storyteller in the Hebrew Bible. The Yahwist narrates the initial slaughter of one human being by another, and strikingly, it is described as fratricidal. The book explores the anthropological, theological, and psychological dimensions of this universal myth and shows the readers such a vivid and intense story that one feels like will never get to the bottom of it. Thus, after a deep reading, this well known story is much more than what could seem at first sight; it can be said to be the portrait of human that is always torn between the innocence of Eden and its denial; between what is considered 'doing well' and 'not doing well'.

Book excerpt: Essential research on the relationship between the Persian empire and the the formation of the book of Psalms In this latest entry in the Ancient Israel and Its Literature series, W. Dennis Tucker, Jr. examines the role of Persian imperial ideology in the creation of psalms in Book 5 of the Psalter and in the shaping of the book of Psalms as a whole. Although much research has been conducted on the relationship between the Persian empire and the creation of biblical texts, the book of Psalms has been largely absent from this discussion. Tucker seeks to rectify this omission by illustrating that Book 5 constructed a subtle anti-imperial ideology in response to the threats imposed from all empires both past and present. Features: Close study of the psalms portrayal of human power to that of Yahweh Comparison of Achaemenid propaganda to the ideology found in the psalms Evidence drawn from Persian iconography and inscriptions

Cheryl's true-life account tells all as she reveals how she was sexually violated as a toddler by her own grandfather. Refusing to honor him with the title of Grand dad, Cheryl refers to this man as "Tom Davis". She takes you on a journey--from a frightened little girl to her becoming a voice for abused children whose voice are not being heard. She writes: With God, a good Christian counselor, and the support of various family members and friends, [this] little girl is almost out of prison. I unlock one closed door at a time and when I have faced that demon and have beaten him, I don't turn around and close the door, I give it a back kick and I don't look back! I start walking toward the next locked door, I take a deep breath, I put the key into the lock, and I step inside. There are a few more doors to walk through. When I kick that last door closed and feel the sun on my face, I will finally be free and I hope to help others find their way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gap between the New Testament and the Imprecatory Psalms is less than we think. When faced with prayers against enemies in the Psalms, we are too quick to assume that these Old Testament authors were ignorant of some basic New Testament ethics. They are self-righteous, thinking they have earned God's favor. They don't know that the wicked can repent and be forgiven. They believe in vengeance and hating their enemies. We assume wrongly. These prayers are far more aware than many modern churchgoers of how deeply our own sin runs, so that even when persecuted, we are not automatically entitled to divine help. Even when we are truly entitled to justice against unrighteous attackers, if God rescues us, that is unmerited grace. Further, the psalms are fully aware that their enemies can repent, and they show mercy to them. The Book of Psalms teaches its readers--individuals and the whole people of God--to desire the repentance, forgiveness, and divine blessing of all nations, even the people's most vicious enemies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study Heather Gorman analyses Luke's portrayal of Jesus' death in light of the ancient rhetorical tradition, particularly the progymnasmata and the rhetorical handbooks. In addition to providing a detailed, up-to-date exegetical study of Luke 22:66-23:49, she argues three things. First, through the strategic placement of rhetorical figures and the use of common topics associated with refutation and confi rmation, Luke structures his passion narrative as a debate about Jesus' innocence, which suggests that one of Luke's primary concerns is to portray Jesus as politically innocent. Second, ancient examples of synkrisis suggest that part of the purpose of Luke's characterisation of Jesus in the passion narrative, especially when set in parallel to Paul and Stephen in Acts, was to set up Jesus as a model for his followers lest they face similar persecution or death. Finally, Luke's special material and his variations from Mark are explicable in terms of ancient compositional techniques, especially paraphrase and narration, and thus recourse to a special Passion Source is unnecessary.
