Book excerpt: The May 1926 coup d’état in Poland inaugurated what has become known as the period of sanacja or “cleansing.” The event has been explored in terms of the impact that it had on state structures and political styles. But for both supporters and opponents of the post-May regime, the sanacja was a catalyst for debate about Polish national identity, about citizenship and responsibility to the nation, and about postwar sexual morality and modern gender identities. The Clash of Moral Nations is a study of the political culture of interwar Poland, as reflected in and by the coup. Eva Plach shifts the focus from strictly political contexts and examines instead the sanacja’s open-ended and malleable language of purification, rebirth, and moral regeneration. In tracking the diverse appropriations and manipulations of the sanacja concept, Plach relies on a wide variety of texts, including the press of the period, the personal and professional papers of notable interwar women activists, and the official records of pro-sanacja organizations, such as the Women’s Union for Citizenship Work. The Clash of Moral Nations introduces an important cultural and gendered dimension to understandings of national and political identity in interwar Poland.

Ultimately, the US attempts to discipline and moderate Cuban policies led to an actual political coexistence between the two countries, establishing a long-term dynamics of the US attitude toward Cuba for the following decades. The work covers nearly fifty years of this debate between the publication of two pivotal works in 1947 and 1994. Anna Sosnowska provides an insightful interpretation of how local and generational experience shaped the notions of post-1945 Polish historians about Eastern European backwardness, and how their debate influenced Western historical sociology, social theories of development and dependency in peripheral areas, and the image of Eastern Europe in Western, Marxist-inspired social science. Although created under the adverse conditions of state socialism and censorship, this body of scholarship had an important repercussion in international social science of the post-war period, contributing an emphasis on international comparisons, as well as a stress on social theory and explanations. Sosnowska's analysis also helps to understand current differences that lead to conflicts between Europe’s richest and economically most developed core and its southern and eastern peripheries. The historians she studies also investigated analogies between paths in Eastern Europe and regions of West Africa, Latin America and East Asia.

Ostatecznym celem Rewolucji nie było zniesienie władzy religijnej, a osłabienie politycznej. III. Dlaczego Rewolucja francuska, będąc rewolucją polityczną, przypominała przewroty religijne? IV. Cała niemal Europa miała jednakowe instytucje i one wszędzie upadły. V. Jaki był rezultat Rewolucji? KSIĘGA DRUGA I. Dlaczego prawa feudalne zostały znienawidzone przez lud francuski więcej, niż gdzie indziej? II. Centralizacja administracyjna jest dziełem dawnych rządów, nie zaś Rewolucji lub cesarstwa. III. Tak zwana opieka rządowa jest wytworem dawnych rządów. IV. Sprawiedliwość administracyjna i wyjęcie urzędników z pod sądu były instytucjami przedrewolucyjnymi. V. Jak mogła centralizacja ogarnąć dawne władze i zastąpić je nie burząc ich. VI. O zwyczajach administracyjnych za dawnych rządów. VII. Już przed Rewolucją Paryż miał przewagę nad prowincjami i wchłaniał całość państwa, jak nigdzie w Europie. VIII. Francja stała się krajem, którego mieszkańcy byli najbardziej podobnymi do siebie. IX. Ludzie, tak do siebie podobni, dzielili się na drobne gromadki obce i obojętne dla siebie. X. Jakim sposobem zniesienie wolności politycznej i rozdział klas wytworzyły prawie wszystkie choroby społeczne, które zburzyły dawny ustrój. XI. O wolności szczególnej, która spotykała się za dawnych rządów i o jej wpływie na Rewolucję. XII. Nie zważając na postęp cywilizacji, położenie włościanina we Francji gorsze było w XVIII w. niż w XIII. KSIĘGA TRZECIA I. Około połowy XVIII w. literaci stali się głównymi mężami stanu we Francji i jakie stąd wynikły następstwa. II. Jakim sposobem niewiara mogła stać się ogólną i przeważną namiętnością Francuzów w XVIII w. i jaki wpływ wywarło to na Rewolucję? III. Francuzi dążyli do reform wprzód niż do swobód. IV. O tym, że panowanie Ludwika XIV należało do najszczęśliwszych okresów dawnej monarchii i w jaki sposób okoliczność ta przyśpieszyła Rewolucję? V. Jak doprowadzono lud do powstania, chcąc ulżyć jego położeniu? VI. O pewnych sposobach, którymi rząd zakończył wychowanie rewolucyjne ludu. VII. Rewolucję polityczną poprzedził doniosły przewrót administracyjny i jakie to miało następstwa. VIII. Wszystko poprzednie doprowadziło samo z siebie do Rewolucji.
