Book excerpt: Unlike foods and non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages containing more than 1.2% alcohol by volume are so far exempt from the obligation to display a list of ingredients and a nutrition declaration on the product label. Business operators may nonetheless provide these on a voluntary basis. In recent years, the alcoholic beverage industry has committed to different degrees of voluntary provision of information on ingredients and nutritional information. The current study characterises the market landscape from the point of view of the consumer, assesses the presence and the extent to which nutritional and ingredients information is provided on-label (i.e. ingredient information only, full nutritional declaration only, energy content only or a combination of those), and the presence of references to off-label (online) information on alcoholic beverages across EU Member States. Its aim is to complement the sector's self-monitoring reports with an additional snapshot of the market situation. The results will inform policy makers and support informed exchanges with stakeholders, in particular in the context of the Revision of the Food Information to Consumers Regulation (Regulation (EU) 1169/2011).

Book excerpt: This comprehensive and authoritative second edition offers food scientists, nutritionists, public health specialists, and those involved in the research and development of new beverages an exhaustive survey of how common beverages impact our health and nutrition, as well as a basis for research designed to produce healthier beverages. Every year brings an improvement in our understanding of how the many types and aspects of what we drink (beverages) impact our health and a desire to understand the current state of affairs for beverage technology. There is still no new single book that provides objective reviews on the wide range of global health issues associated with alcoholic ad non-alcoholic beverages. Beverage Impacts on Nutrition and Health, Second Edition is the single best source of reviews that describe beverage history; coffee, tea, alcohol, wine, cranberry and citrus juice, tea, coffee, dairy milk, soy milks and breast milk. Furthermore the book contains up-to-date reviews that describe beverage effects on satiety and energy balance, recommendations for persons with diabetes and metabolic syndrome, nutritional supplementation for the elderly, performance enhancement by athletes, energy drinks, and bottled water qualities. The final chapters summarize soft drink marketing issues, health effects of sugar and high fructose corn syrup, beverage ingredient functions, beverage labeling regulation and the importance of trends in beverage development. These updated chapters are objectively written to emphasize peer-reviewed references and minimize the anecdotal references often seen in the current literature describing beverages and their impact on our health and nutrition. All chapters are authored by recognized authorities from industry, the health-care system, and universities. This book contains 24 concise and user-friendly chapters intended to enable readers to grasp the message quickly and easily.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HANDBOOK OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES A comprehensive two-volume set that describes the science and technology involved in the production and analysis of alcoholic beverages HANDBOOK OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Technical, Analytical and Nutritional Aspects At the heart of all alcoholic beverages is the process of fermentation, particularly alcoholic fermentation, whereby sugars are converted to ethanol and many other minor products. The Handbook of Alcoholic Beverages tracks the major fermentation process, and the major chemical, physical and technical processes that accompany the production of the world’s most familiar alcoholic drinks. Indigenous beverages and small-scale production are also covered to a significant extent. The overall approach is multidisciplinary, reflecting the true nature of the subject. Thus, aspects of biochemistry, biology (including microbiology), chemistry, health science, nutrition, physics and technology are all necessarily involved, but the emphasis is on chemistry in many areas of the book. Emphasis is also on more recent developments and innovations, but there is sufficient background for less experienced readers. The approach is unified, in that although different beverages are dealt with in different chapters, there is extensive cross-referencing and comparison between the subjects of each chapter. Appropriate for food professionals working in the development and manufacture of alcohol-based drinks, as well as academic and industrial researchers involved in the development of testing methods for the analysis and regulation of alcohol in the drinks industry. Divided into five parts, this comprehensive two-volume work presents: INTRODUCTION, BACKGROUND AND HISTORY: a simple introduction to the history and development of alcohol and some recent trends and developments. FERMENTED BEVERAGES: BEERS, CIDERS, WINES AND RELATED DRINKS: the latest innovations and aspects of the different fermentation processes used in beer, wine, cider, liqueur wines, fruit wines, low-alcohol and related beverages. SPIRITS: covers distillation methods and stills used in the production of whisky, cereal- and cane-based spirits, brandy, fruit spirits and liqueurs. ANALYTICAL METHODS: covering the monitoring of processes in the production of alcoholic beverages, as well as sample preparation, chromatographic, spectroscopic, electrochemical, physical, sensory and organoleptic methods of analysis. NUTRITION AND HEALTH ASPECTS RELATING TO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: includes a discussion on nutritional aspects, both macro- and micro-nutrients, of alcoholic beverages, their ingestion, absorption and catabolism, the health consequences of alcohol, and details of the additives and residues within the various beverages and their raw materials.

This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an expanding market of no- and low-alcohol beverages (NoLos). However, their effects on global ethanol consumption and overall public health are still in question. Concerns have been raised about the impact of NoLos in reducing alcohol consumption and its associated harm and the possible drawbacks and implications, such as misleading minors, pregnant women, abstainers or those seeking to stop drinking about their actual ethanol content. There are also concerns about the impact of NoLo branded products being displayed close to the brand’s main alcoholic beverages and their potential to normalize alcohol consumption. There is a need to monitor their consumption and impact on aggregated alcohol consumption to understand the public health implications of NoLos. The alcohol by volume content of NoLos must be defined, harmonised and clearly labelled.

Current scientific knowledge concerning the metabolism of ethanol and the nutrient contributions of fermented beverages is discussed within the perspective of their long religious andcultural tradition in human society. Beers and wines have been enjoyed for their gustatory as well as pharmacologic value since antiquity. The processing and consumption of indigenous foods containing fermentable sugars is reviewed historically, along with the fermentation of wine and the brewing of beer. A survey of the therapeutic uses of alcoholic beverages and the effects of alcoholic abuse on body systems are described. Alcoholism has profound medical, nutritional and socioeconomic implications on an individual and on society. An appendix identifies the compounds contained in whiskey, wine and beer.

Book excerpt: Nutrition is an essential component of the work of all health and community workers, including those involved in humanitarian assistance, and yet it is often neglected in their basic training. Drawn from the experiences of an international editor team with extensive field experience, Nutrition for Developing Countries brings together the essential basics of nutrition in an easily accessible form which is accurate, up-to-date and practical, and suitable for a wide range of readers at different levels. The book covers the whole life cycle, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, older children, adolescents, adults and the elderly, with an emphasis on the most vulnerable women and children. The fully revised and updated edition addresses both the long standing problems of undernutrition and malnutrition, and the growing epidemic of overnutrition and obesity, which are responsible for the rapid increase in non-communicable diseases of later life. Generously illustrated, Nutrition for Developing Countries explains in clear simple language, and practical detail, how nutrition workers can help families with nutrition problems, including many ideas for exercises for training nutrition workers.
