Book Synopsis 'In the Vaults Beneath' by : Ceri Boston
Download or read book 'In the Vaults Beneath' written by Ceri Boston and published by Oxford Archaeology Monograph. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeological investigations, undertaken as part of a programme to restore St George's Church, Bloomsbury, to its original Hawksmoor splendour, involved the removal of 871 triple lead-lined coffins from within the crypt and monitoring works within the churchyard. The elaborate named coffins of upper middle class parishioners provided a valuable opportunity to greatly develop the new field of post-medieval coffin analysis, and to integrate historical, archaeological and osteological data in order to build a vivid picture of this population. Over 90% of coffins were named, which allowed a rare opportunity to blind test osteological methods on 72 skeletons, whilst analysis of documentary and osteological evidence has challenged some long-held beliefs in post-medieval burial archaeology. Disease patterns in the St George's assemblage were influenced by the longevity and affluence of this population, factors that also underlay the necessity for elaborate and expensive dental treatment, including very early examples of fillings, filing and dentures.

Book Synopsis Wisconsin Medicine by : Ronald L. Numbers
Download or read book Wisconsin Medicine written by Ronald L. Numbers and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The March of medicine through Wisconsin is a fascinating story, full of triumph and failure, heroes and quacks, and -- overriding all -- stuttering steps toward a modern system of health care that has witnessed the doubling of life expectancies among Wisconsin citizens. This is the story of medicine in Wisconsin, told by professional historians, each speaking from his or her area of specialty. Since territorial times, the physician has risen from a position of marginal respectability to one of unparalleled admiration and trust. The hospital, unknown to residents just 150 years ago, has become a symbol of modern science and a source of civic pride. Knowledge of disease has revolutionized health practices. The purpose of this book is not to celebrate the achievements of Wisconsin's physicians, notable as they have been, but to look critically and sympathetically at the state's medical record. The contributors make no exaggerated claims for Wisconsin. Occasionally, the state led the nation in health matters, but more often it followed the example of others. With this book, the reader will come to understand how and why Wisconsin's medical practice evolved. - Jacket flap.

Book Synopsis The Constitution and the Attorneys General by : Jefferson Powell
Download or read book The Constitution and the Attorneys General written by Jefferson Powell and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the Republic, the President's chief advisor in the interpretation of the Constitution has been the Attorney General. The opinions of the Attorneys General on constitutional topics are official statements of the executive branch's views, and in many circumstances where a constitutional question cannot come before a court, their opinions provide the final answer. This book offers the most important constitutional opinions of the Attorneys General and the Department of Justice from Edmund Randolph (President Washington's first Attorney General) to Janet Reno. Powell's commentary provides biographical and historical context to enhance the reader's appreciation of the opinions, which cover such topics as the separation of powers, the authority of Congress and the President over matters of war and peace, the nature of citizenship, and the executive's responsibilities with respect to statutes that the President believes unconstitutional. The opinions are presented in full text and with original pagination, making The Constitution and the Attorneys General a fully independent research tool. A variety of indices and tables give the reader full access to the executive branch's two-century-long tradition of construing and applying the Constitution. "A superb and invaluable source book for graduate students in political science, historians, and legal scholars." -- CHOICE Magazine

This book was released on 1993 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Origins of Chemistry" integrates the histories of Greek, Arabic, and Latin alchemical traditions with philosophy, technology, and the genesis of medical chemistry. Multhauf differs from his predecessors by finding the sources of chemistry not in medieval alchemy, but in the "chemical" science of matter described in antiquity. This landmark study, which concludes with the field's reorganization by Lavoisier and his contemporaries, contains an exceptional bibliography of primary and secondary sources. Robert P. Multhauf is retired from the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., where he was Director of the Museum of History and Technology.
