Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Roosevelt the antiquarian, the anecdotalist, the collector of books, the gentleman farmer, the affable host . . . and important part of Roosevelt and one which has not been so well documented before."—Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. "As a personal picture of Roosevelt's lighter moments during the war, Hassett's diary is unsurpassed."—The Christian Science Monitor "It is Hassett's ability to observe . . . that gives the reader the sense of knowing the real Roosevelt during those years."—San Francisco Chronicle William D. Hassett was an assistant secretary to Franklin D. Roosevelt. He left a revelatory account of his three years of daily interaction with the President accompanying him on many train trips to and from Hyde Park that remained entirely hidden to the press and most outsiders. Hassett was a newspaperman and public relations executive who had a close relationship with FDR, who admired his profound erudition and talent as a writer. At times the secretary, who scrupulously recorded the comings and goings of innumerable visitors and dignitaries, secret and not, added some of his own observations and evaluations of one person or another. Many of the slow train rides from a railroad siding kept secret to most people to Hyde Park were the occasion for visitors to come on board along the way or for FDR to stop and spend some time in conference off the train. These recorded chronicles are quoted in most historical works about Franklin D. Roosevelt particularly during the war years as an unmatched treasure trove that enhances the historical record.

Book excerpt: The book that launched environmental history, William Cronon's Changes in the Land, now revised and updated. Winner of the Francis Parkman Prize In this landmark work of environmental history, William Cronon offers an original and profound explanation of the effects European colonists' sense of property and their pursuit of capitalism had upon the ecosystems of New England. Reissued here with an updated afterword by the author and a new preface by the distinguished colonialist John Demos, Changes in the Land, provides a brilliant inter-disciplinary interpretation of how land and people influence one another. With its chilling closing line, "The people of plenty were a people of waste," Cronon's enduring and thought-provoking book is ethno-ecological history at its best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of both sets of Arab-Israeli negotiations in 2000 led not only to recrimination and bloodshed, with the outbreak of the second intifada, but to the creation of a new myth. Syrian and Palestinian intransigence was blamed for the current disastrous state of affairs, as both parties rejected a "generous" peace offering from the Israelis that would have brought peace to the region. The Truth About Camp David shatters that myth. Based on the riveting, eyewitness accounts of more than forty direct participants involved in the latest rounds of Arab-Israeli negotiations, including the Camp David 2000 summit, former federal investigator-turned-investigative journalist Clayton E. Swisher provides a compelling counter-narrative to the commonly accepted history. The Truth About Camp David details the tragic inner workings of the Clinton Administration's negotiating mayhem, their eleventh hour blunders and miscalculations, and their concluding decision to end the Oslo process with blame and disengagement. It is not only a fascinating historical look at Middle East politics on the brink of disaster, but a revelatory portrait of how all-too-human American political considerations helped facilitate the present crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BETWEEN 1933 and 1942, nearly 200,000 young African-Americans participated in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), one of Franklin D. Roosevelt's most successful New Deal agencies. In an effort to correct the lack of historical attention paid to the African-American contribution to the CCC, Olen Cole, Jr., examines their participation in the Corps as well as its impact on them. Though federal legislation establishing the CCC held that no bias of "race, color, or creed" was to be tolerated, Cole demonstrates that the very presence of African-Americans in the CCC, as well as the placement of the segregated CCC work camps in predominantly white California communities, became significant sources of controversy. Cole assesses community resistance to all-black camps, as well as the conditions of the state park camps, national forest camps, and national park camps where African-American work companies in California were stationed. He also evaluates the educational and recreational experiences of African-American CCC participants, their efforts to combat racism, and their contributions to the protection and maintenance of California's national forests and parks. Perhaps most important, Cole's use of oral histories gives voice to individual experiences: former Corps members discuss the benefits of employment, vocational training, and character development as well as their experiences of community reaction to all-black CCC camps. An important and much neglected chapter in American history, Cole's study should interest students of New Deal politics, state and national park history, and the African-American experience in the twentieth century.
