Book excerpt: Students of Scripture love to compare how translators have understood the ancient Hebrew and Greek texts to see if they can discover deeper meanings, or simply ask more pertinent questions. Four of the most popular versions have been placed in parallel columns--KJV, NKJV, NIV, and NLT--so all can take copious notes. Preachers, Bible study leaders and participants, students of the Scriptures, and general readers who are curious about how different translations render their favorite verses will delight in this volume. The same set of verses for all four translations is located on facing pages two translations to a page making text comparison a snap. King James Version The dignified, poetic language of this word-for-word translation has made it the favorite of countless readers for over four centuries. New King James Version A completely updated translation that's faithful to the accuracy and beauty of the KJV, while using contemporary and readable language. New International Version (2011 Update Text) Scholarly accuracy and easy readability combine to help readers understand and apply the intended meaning of the biblical text. New Living Translation (Second Edition) Includes marginal notes that explain word choices, plus a more consistent rendition of ancient terms into their modern English equivalents.

His Small Catechism as well as several pieces on prayer, including his Personal Prayer Book and A Simple Way to Pray, show his engagement in the basic task of teaching the faith. Luther’s prefaces to his own writings contain personal reflections on his reforming work. Also in this volume are his commentary on The Magnificat, selected letters, and shorter pieces that display his pastoral responses to particular situations: Sermon on Preparing to Die, Whether One May Flee from a Deadly Plague, and Comfort for Women Who Have Had a Miscarriage. Each volume in The Annotated Luther series contains new introductions, annotations, illustrations, and notes to help shed light on Luther’s context and interpret his writings for today. The translations of Luther’s writings include updates of Luther’s Works, American Edition or entirely new translations of Luther’s German or Latin writings.

Book Synopsis Calvin for the Third Millennium by : Hans Mol
Download or read book Calvin for the Third Millennium written by Hans Mol and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a series of sermons produced by Emeritus Professor Hans Mol, and based on Biblical texts, the Commentaries of John Calvin on these texts, and on Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion. Mol is Australia's pre-eminent scholar in the sociology of religion, particularly in Australia. His 1971 volume, Religion in Australia, was the first attempt at statistical analysis of religion in Australia, which was also internationally significant. Parallel to Mol's interest in the sociology of religion has been his interest in Calvin. Indeed the theological basis of his life has been as a Calvinist. Here in this volume he brings both of these interests together. His sermons, preached over the years in Canberra, seek to apply the teachings of Calvin to a world-view in which the scientific study of religion, and indeed the wider study of sociology, are of central significance. In these sermons, he succeeds considerably in this. The volume is a substantial contribution to scholarship, in that the combination of these two factors has only rarely been attempted. Thus, the volume has originality and will have enduring value. It is especially appropriate that it should be published at this time, in preparation for the 500th Anniversary of Calvin's birth (1509-2009).
