Book excerpt: About the Book Grandpa Speaks: A Time Lapse Diary was written by an elder, first-time Grandpa. In time lapse form, this diary relates facts, feelings, and often emotions in a way that one might hear from a close friend or relative over the phone, in a letter, or on a postcard. It may have multiple entries in a day, days in a row, or a week or two with nothing. Then, like with a best friend for life, the entries just pick up as though no span of time in the conversation has passed. It looks back, paints the present, and hints at the future through imagination. About the Author J.M. Loyd is just a guy from Arkansas who grew up in a small town in the central part of the state. A town with three colleges and a fine ditch. I split my young time between them. I was fortunate to attend school at the teacher’s college from nursery school through the fifth grade. It was quite an experience to be the guinea pig for the aspiring teachers standing in the hall behind the two-way mirrors. I swam on championship teams for high school and two of the colleges. Achieved first chair trumpet in the school band, was a member of three rock bands, lead singer in two. Stage actor, set designer and finder. I met my wife and put all of that away for our family. We worked together daily and raised our son. We married for keeps. We had stores in the footwear and fashion industry and helped her family run the summer camp for children at our homeplace. I was named “Captain”. The name stuck. I led adventures groups, was the camp deejay, announcer, song leader and counsellor. I am a licensed pilot, HAM, scuba diver, sailor, boater, builder, biker, herpetologist, gardener, fisherman, weatherman, salesman, locksmith, musician and lifeguard, mostly retired. But, most importantly, a late in life Grandpa, with a lot to share.

Book excerpt: A former firearms executive pulls back the curtain on America's multibillion-dollar gun industry, exposing how it fostered extremism and racism, radicalizing the nation and bringing cultural division to a boiling point. As an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and conservationist–all things that the firearms industry was built on–Ryan Busse chased a childhood dream and built a successful career selling millions of firearms for one of America’s most popular gun companies. But blinded by the promise of massive profits, the gun industry abandoned its self-imposed decency in favor of hardline conservatism and McCarthyesque internal policing, sowing irreparable division in our politics and society. That drove Busse to do something few other gun executives have done: he's ending his 30-year career in the industry to show us how and why we got here. Gunfight is an insider’s call-out of a wild, secretive, and critically important industry. It shows us how America's gun industry shifted from prioritizing safety and ethics to one that is addicted to fear, conspiracy, intolerance, and secrecy. It recounts Busse's personal transformation and shows how authoritarianism spreads in the guise of freedom, how voicing one's conscience becomes an act of treason in a culture that demands sameness and loyalty. Gunfight offers a valuable perspective as the nation struggles to choose between armed violence or healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hero–or Nazi? Silvia Foti was raised on reverent stories about her hero grandfather, a martyr for Lithuanian independence and an unblemished patriot. Jonas Noreika, remembered as “General Storm,” had resisted his country’s German and Soviet occupiers in World War II, surviving two years in a Nazi concentration camp only to be executed in 1947 by the KGB. His granddaughter, growing up in Chicago, was treated like royalty in her tightly knit Lithuanian community. But in 2000, when Silvia traveled to Lithuania for a ceremony honoring her grandfather, she heard a very different story—a “rumor” that her grandfather had been a “Jew-killer.” The Nazi’s Granddaughter is Silvia’s account of her wrenching twenty-year quest for the truth, from a beautiful house confiscated from its Jewish owners, to familial confessions and the Holocaust tour guide who believed that her grandfather had murdered members of his family. A heartbreaking and dramatic story based on exhaustive documentary research and soul-baring interviews, The Nazi’s Granddaughter is an unforgettable journey into World War II history, intensely personal but filled with universal lessons about courage, faith, memory, and justice.

Book excerpt: “It is admirable to be a man among men, eager to listen, calculated in speech, proudly developing broad shoulders, thick skin, a robust spine, and a love of God, country, and women as complementary equals. It’s okay to be strong, courageous, faithful, chivalrous, and full of virility, and it’s okay to develop one’s position of leadership and authority. With all my vices, weaknesses, and shortcomings, this is who I strive to be. It’s who we want our daughters to marry and our sons to become. Such is the man most capable of complementing his wife and encouraging her to become the woman she has every right to be. The man you are becoming need not cower at the altar of groupthink and popular decadence.” This book is a great read — often funny, sometimes tragic, always earnest, always honest. It demonstrates that idealism is not dead. Follow on Spencer’s ride from boyhood to mid-life, and you will encounter characters you wish you would have met in your own life, people who either challenged or mentored Spencer, or both, and who helped mold him into the man he is today. – Andrea Brackett Spencer Geswein is a son of God before all else. He is a devoted husband to one beautiful woman and a proud father engaged in the lives of their three great kids. Spencer is also a grateful son and brother beholden to his father, mother, siblings, and other treasured mentors who have helped him along. Christian country kid from rural Indiana turned racecar driver, real estate investor, author, and trainer of young men – Spencer is an outspoken advocate for hard work, homespun biblical values, and durable manhood. Spencer calls it like he sees it and is “standing in the arena”, ready to take on whatever exciting new chapter the good Lord has in store for him. Spencer and his family enjoy life at their home and farm in northwest Indiana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old-timer physician, Stephen L. DeFelice, with no holds barred, describes to his grandchildren, Olivia and Stephen Carlos, how they are rapidly crossing the bridge from the traditional world into the cold, controlling world of technology. As a result, we are all surrendering our privacy and freedom to others while, puzzlingly, there are few effective leaders to guide and protect us. This book analyzes what people and governments are really like, the dark side of technology and such subjects as our educational system, the media, our hate epidemic, the sexual revolution, evolution and the anti-God movements as well as ways to adjust to this new, unsettling world of technology. He coined an interesting term, The Internet Democracy, as a major cause behind the dynamics fueling our chaotic technological-based cultural explosion. Dr. DeFelice was born of Italian immigrant parents in 1936 in a home without a television or telephone and has had, firsthand, the unique privilege of personally observing and analyzing the power of increasing technology and its impact on our changing cultural values over four generations, an opportunity that future historians will not have. In 1976 he founded FIM, the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, whose mission is to accelerate medical discovery, www.fimdefelice.org.

Book excerpt: The life of Rachael Webster is suddenly turned upside down, when her mother breaks the news to her that she will be leaving her home in Chicago and going to live with her maternal grandparents in Tennessee. Her grandparents are two devout Christians, but Rachael feels out of place around them.Filled with rage and resentment over the decision her parents have made, Rachael sets out to destroy all her chances for happiness by rebelling against authority. Rachael admires her grandparent’s faith and has grown to respect their prayer life. She listens to Grandmother as she talks to Jesus about her in the wee hours of the night. She wonders if Jesus really cares about her the way grandma says. God’s conviction weighs heavily upon her mind as she ponders what to do next. Finally in desperation, she goes to the bathroom at the school and calls out to Jesus for her souls Salvation. She laid down her load of guilt and shame and Jesus washed her as white as the snow. Shortly thereafter, Principal prater sends a note home to her grandparents telling of a school board meeting that has been scheduled to review Rachael’s absentees at the school. The note said that they also wanted to address the subject of Rachael’s negative attitude with the other students. At the meeting, Rachael is told that she must finish the school year at The Bentley School for Wayward Girls. Rachael’s stay at the school is very unpleasant at the start. However God opens so many doors at Bentley as he demonstrates his power and love for all. Upon graduation, Rachael goes to Africa to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a missionary. Her long awaited dream of helping the unfortunates was finally going to be realized, or so she thought. Upon entering the village, however, she had serious doubts. The streets were lined with sick and dying people. It was a death camp, not a mission field, especially for the children and elderly. Burying the dead was a daily matter and weighed heavily upon Rachael. Finally in desperation she decides to go back to America and ask for help for the Kenyan people. After many failed efforts she decides to go visit her parents before going back to Africa.. Who do you suppose she runs into there. You're right, it was her old boyfriend George Fulton..After hearing about the people of Africa and their state, he quits his Chief of Staff position at the local hospital and goes back to Africa with Rachael. Many years later after a world of success, they come back home to America and settle in the little town of Townsend, Tennessee. They opened a medical clinic on their property and minister to the needs of the people who live in that area.

Book excerpt: Janet Duffy, a spunky, seventeen-year-old Irish girl, is eager to start college—but instability between her alcoholic father and self-absorbed mother jeopardize her dream, so she sets up her own apartment with her younger sister in Jamaica, Queens, and treks to City College in Manhattan, New York. The routine is deadening, but she finds purpose in the black community, working for a mural painter and volunteering for a civil rights activist. After turning eighteen, Janet marches with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and falls for a young black saxophone player, Carmen. Her father, a policeman, explodes over their relationship, so Janet rebels—runs away with the jazz musician, and then winds up in the East Village in the Summer of Love. In the ensuing months she deals with heartbreak, sexual harassment, poverty, and danger—but eventually, she asks for the help she needs in order to pick up the pieces of her life and return to her dream.
