Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic growers are limited in crop protection techniques for cucumber beetle management. Spotted (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi) and striped (Acalymma vitatta) cucumber beetles are significant pests of cucurbits in the U.S. Feeding results in aesthetic damage and reduction in marketable yields as well as transmission of bacterial wilt that can result in plant mortality. Biopesticides are products formulated from naturally occurring organisms such as fungi and bacteria that are pathogenic or toxic to insect pests. Advantages to these products are that they have low environmental risk, low risk to non-target organisms including mammals and beneficial insects, and can help reduce resistance to pesticides when used in an integrated pest management program. The overall goal of this dissertation was to examine the potential of microbial products to reduce mortality and feeding by cucumber beetles for the benefit of organic producers. Chapter one is a review of the biopesticide industry, biology of microbial agents for insect pest management, the role of biopesticides in sustainable agriculture, and constraints to their use. Chapter two covers the field experiment conducted on Galia melons in 2010 and 2011 using Chromobacterium subtsugae and Beauveria bassiana. Chapter three covers the laboratory assays using Beauveria bassiana and the laboratory and field experiments using Isaria fumosorosea. Chapter four is the final experiment on the effects of these microbial agents on cucumber beetles and squash bugs in organic pumpkin production. The results indicated anti-feedant effects by Chromobacterium subtsugae and Beaveria bassiana in the laboratory assays, but field trial results were inconclusive and did not show a reduction in beetle populations or a yield increase resulting from spray applications of these microbial agents. Complications in the field studies arose from plant pathogens and physiological factors independent from cucumber beetle population and damage. Recommendations are to improve biopesticide efficacy through improving formulation and delivery, by additional screening and testing to determine efficacy on multiple life stages of the pest, and research to increase the understanding of ecological roles and interactions of microbial biopesticides in the environment.

Book excerpt: The predatory arthropod assemblage often differs in abundance and richness between organic and conventional agroecosystems, likely due to habitat management practices that are more common on organic farms, such as the use of smaller fields, reduced tillage, and increased natural area. Such practices may allow growers of specialty crops to minimize their use of pesticides by enhancing predator populations. However, this conservation biological control does not always result in increased pest suppression, perhaps because different predatory taxa may benefit from different habitat management practices. Thus, effective integration of conservation biological control into a production system depends on accurate identification of the guild of predators that provide pest suppression. Cucurbits are a specialty crop plagued by striped and spotted cucumber beetles (Acalymma vittatum and Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi), which feed on fruits and foliage, and transmit the causal pathogen of bacterial wilt. One goal of this research was to determine whether the increase in abundance and richness of predators that is often observed in strip tillage and organic management translates to an increase in biocontrol of cucumber beetles. To do this, we used pitfall traps to ascertain the predator assemblage, and a sentinel egg study with video surveillance to determine rates of D. undecimpunctata howardi egg predation and identity of egg predators. These experiments were conducted in cucurbits grown within strip tillage versus conventional tillage with plastic mulch under organic versus conventional management. Another goal of this research was to identify the predators that consume A. vittatum using PCR-based molecular gut content analysis. Such techniques enable researchers to accurately determine predators of a focal pest in an un-manipulated system. Predators were collected from organic and conventional farms located in Ohio. DNA was extracted from all samples and PCR used to amplify A. vittatum DNA, if present within the gut contents of a sample. In addition, predatory arthropods were sampled at each farm using pitfall traps, and a sentinel egg study was conducted. Here we show that while strip tillage often resulted in enhanced predator populations within cucurbits produced under both conventional and organic management, this did not translate into increased biological control in our study system. Of 1,215 predators tested for the presence of A. vittatum DNA, 139 were positive (11.4%); there was no effect of organic versus conventional management on proportion testing positive. Approximately 40% of Coccinellidae, 14% of Opiliones and Carabidae, 6% of Lycosidae and Chilopoda, and 1% of Formicidae and Staphylinidae tested positive. Our sentinel egg studies identified Formicidae, Coleoptera, Diptera, Gastropoda, and Opiliones as important predators of above-ground cucumber beetle eggs. This research is the first to use molecular gut content methods to identify the guild of predators that consume A. vittatum. Additionally, we show that sentinel prey studies may not identify important contributors to biological control and may inflate the importance of certain taxa to pest suppression.

Book excerpt: The breakthrough resource for fruit and vegetable growers at every scale who want to go ‘beyond organic’ and build higher soil quality and fertility using fewer inputs through a unique ecosystem-balancing approach “Atthowe’s book takes ecological farming to the next level. It is packed with useful, field-tested, innovative techniques for farming more gently without sacrificing productivity. . . This is the future of farming. I highly recommend this book.”—Ben Hartman, author of The Lean Farm The Ecological Farm is the go-to guide for ecological growing, with a unique focus on reduced tillage, minimizing farm and garden inputs, and pest control. Reflecting the wisdom that farmer, consultant, and educator Helen Atthowe and her late husband, Carl Rosato, gained during decades of farming experience, this book guides readers on how to reduce or eliminate the use of outside inputs of fertilizer or pesticides—even those that are commonly used on certified organic orchards and market gardens. In clear language and with color photographs, charts, and graphs throughout, the book emphasizes the importance of managing the details of an entire growing system over the full life of the enterprise. Based on advances in scientific research in ecological food production, farmers, homesteaders, permaculturists, and gardeners alike will learn methods to: design a farm system that maintains a growing root in the soil year-round to feed the microbial community instead of just crops. strengthen the “immune system” of a farm or garden supply crop needs using only on-farm inputs such as cover crops and living mulch maximize the presence of beneficial insects and microbes that support healthy crop development minimize ecological impact in dealing with insect pest and disease problems The Ecological Farm also features a crop-by-crop guide to growing more than 25 of the most popular and profitable vegetables and fruits, including specific management advice for dealing with pests and diseases. The Ecological Farm makes complex, sometimes messy, ecological concepts and practices understandable to all growers, and makes healthy farming—in which nature is invited to participate—possible. "[This book] will guide all of us as we learn to farm in harmony with an ecosystem and to become obedient to the whole rather than being distracted by the urge to tinker with the parts.” —Wes Jackson, cofounder and president emeritus, The Land Institute
