Book excerpt: This thesis examines the question of what States are legally empowered to do under international law when they seek to protect certain areas of their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In this context, the regulation of shipping and other human activities under the Law of the Sea Convention and, in particular, the regime for special areas under Article 211(6) of the Convention are addressed. Global and regional instruments containing mechanisms to protect specific areas are discussed and relevant State practice is considered with a view to possible implications on customary international law. Finally, guidance is given as to what States can practically do to protect specific areas of their EEZ for environmental reason. (Series: Schriften zum See- und Hafenrecht - Vol. 18)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Life is not all beer and skittles,' said a reflective sportsman, and all books are not fairy tales. In an imperfect state of existence, 'the peety of it is that we cannot have all things as we would like them.' Undeniably we would like all books to be fairy tales or novels, and at present most of them are. But there is another side to things, and we must face it. '"Life is real, life is earnest," as Tennyson tells us,' said an orator to whom I listened lately, and though Longfellow, not Tennyson, wrote the famous line quoted by the earnest speaker, yet there is a good deal of truth in it. The word 'earnest,' like many other good words, has been overdone. It is common to sneer at 'earnest workers,' yet where would we be without them, especially in our climate? In a Polynesian island, where the skies for ever smile, and the blacks for ever dance, earnestness is superfluous. The bread-fruit tree delivers its rolls punctually every morning, strawberries or other fruits, as nice, spring beneath the feet of the dancers; the cavern in the forest provides a roof and shelter from the sun; the sea supplies a swimming-bath, and man, in time of peace, has only to enjoy himself, eat and drink, laugh and love, sing songs and tell fairy tales. His drapery is woven of fragrant flowers, nobody is poor and anxious about food, nobody is rich and afraid of losing his money, nobody needs to think of helping others; he has only to put forth his hand, or draw his bow or swing his fishing-rod, and help himself. To be sure, in time of war, man has just got to be earnest, and think out plans for catching and spearing his enemies, and drill his troops and improve his weapons, in fact to do some work, or have his throat cut, and be put in the oven and eaten. Thus it is really hard for the most fortunate people to avoid being earnest now and then. The people whose stories are told in this book were very different from each other in many ways. The child abbess, Mre AngŽlique, ruling her convent, and at war with naughty abbesses who hated being earnest, does not at once remind us of Hannibal. The great Montrose, with his poems and his scented love-locks, his devotion to his cause, his chivalry, his death, to which he went gaily clad like a bridegroom to meet his bride, does not seem a companion for Palissy the Potter, all black and shrunk and wrinkled, and bowed over his furnaces. It is a long way from gentle Miss Nightingale, tending wounded dogs when a child, and wounded soldiers when a woman, to Charles Gordon playing wild tricks at school, leading a Chinese army, watching alone at Khartoum, in a circle of cruel foes, for the sight of the British colours, and the sounds of the bagpipes that never met his eyes and ears.

Book excerpt: The real-life individuals whose stories are recounted in this book were vastly dissimilar from one another. The child abbess, Mère Angélique, who ruled her convent and fought against misbehaving abbesses who eschewed seriousness, does not immediately bring to mind Hannibal. The great Montrose, with his poems and his perfumed love locks, his allegiance to his cause, his gallantry, and his death, to which he went joyfully attired like a bridegroom to meet his bride, does not appear to be a kindred spirit of Palissy the Potter, a withered and wrinkled figure blackened by the smoke of his furnaces. It is a considerable distance from gentle Miss Nightingale, who tended to injured dogs as a child and to wounded soldiers as an adult, to Charles Gordon, who played pranks in school, commanded a Chinese army, and watched alone at Khartoum, encircled by ruthless enemies, yearning for the sight of the British flag and the sound of bagpipes that he never beheld or heard. However, these people, as well as all the other characters whose narratives are told, shared a common trait: they were sincere, although they undoubtedly did not endlessly talk about their earnestness. It came naturally to them, and they enjoyed it. Their hearts were committed to two things: doing their utmost and maintaining their integrity.

Book excerpt: Inspired by creole traditions, Charmed Life is the second book in Marti Dumas’s fun, middle-grade contemporary fantasy Wildseed Witch series with an all-BIPOC cast, about a social-media-loving tween—and witch! After a summer of being the worst witch at a fancy witch school, Hasani can’t wait to get back to the peace and normalcy of Riverbend Middle where she knows all the rules and is destined to be captain of the Mathletes. There are a few little hiccups to work out—like how she’s going to tell her best friend that she’s a witch—but even though the other two members of Hasani’s coven have joined her friend group and her school, there’s no reason to think that eighth grade won’t be smooth sailing . . . that is until her former friend (and fellow witch) LaToya shows up. LaToya starts trying to take her friends and make Hasani seem like the bad guy. To make matters worse, strange things begin happening around the school—including a termite infestation—and Hasani is sure that LaToya is to blame. However, when Miss Lafleur comes to visit to help deal with the termites and investigate the magic, she helps Hasani to channel her powers and realize just how strong her magic has become. But Miss Lafleur also isn’t convinced that LaToya could have caused all this chaos on her own—so Hasani sets out to prove it, and heads to a magical market, 3Thirteen, to find the ingredients she needs to do so. But in all her focus on proving she’s right and learning more about her magic, is Hasani losing sight of the people and things that are most important to her? Includes a teaser chapter of Fortunes & Frenemies (Wildseed Witch Book 3) The Wildseed Witch series Wildseed Witch (Book 1) Charmed Life (Book 2) Fortunes & Frenemies (Book 3)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative volume, the author addresses some important challenges related to the effective and equitable governance of marine protected areas (MPAs). These challenges are explored through a study of 20 MPA case studies from around the world. A novel governance analysis framework is employed to address some key questions: How can top-down and bottom-up approaches to MPA governance be combined? What does this mean, in reality, in different contexts? How can we develop and implement governance approaches that are both effective in achieving conservation objectives and equitable in fairly sharing associated costs and benefits? The author explores the many issues that these questions raise, as well as exploring options for addressing them. A key theme is that MPA governance needs to combine people, state and market approaches, rather than being based on one approach and its related ideals. Building on a critique of the governance analysis framework developed for common-pool resources, the author puts forward a more holistic and less prescriptive framework for deconstructing and analyzing the governance of MPAs. This inter-disciplinary analysis is aimed at supporting the development of MPA governance approaches that build social-ecological resilience through both institutional and biological diversity. It will also make a significant contribution to wider debates on natural resource governance, as it poses some critical questions for contemporary approaches to related research and offers an alternative theoretical and empirical approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kristen Glenn had put eighteen months of her life into her relationship with Andre, and he walked away. Her greatest desire in life was to marry and have a family, but at age thirty, she wasn't sure it would ever happen. She came to Switzerland for the summer to regain a sense of balance and to realize her lifelong dream to hike the Alps. During her first hike, she veered off the marked path and found an old cemetery with just three headstones. A father, mother, and an eleven-year-old child named Angèlique. All three died during World War II-the parents a year before the child. What happened to Angèlique and why did she die so young? In the journey to solve the mystery, she met a man who became an essential part of the puzzle and had a life-changing effect upon her. She met a pastor, who had held a dark secret for decades, at a small church in the village. Why wouldn't the old woman at the historical library in the village give her any information? Kristen experienced an event that few humans would ever experience, which led her to answers.
