Book Synopsis Challenges Facing Implementation of the Precautionary Principle in Namibian Marine Phosphate Mining Regulation by : Kennedy Xuro Haraseb
Download or read book Challenges Facing Implementation of the Precautionary Principle in Namibian Marine Phosphate Mining Regulation written by Kennedy Xuro Haraseb and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the endorsement of the world¿̐ưs first Marine Phosphate Mining (MPM) licence by the Ministry of Mines and Energy in July 2011, The Benguela Commission¿̐ưs (Commission) mandate to protect and sustain the marine ecosystem is being tested.1 The interest shown by prospectors of Namibia¿̐ưs continental shelf is confirmation of its potential mineral reserves. In this regard, advances in technology are transforming the way phosphoric sediments are explored and extracted. The advances in MPM are not without consequences. Surbun argues that there is tentative evidence that the use of specialist vessels affects the marine ecosystem. Their use has an impact on the breeding, communication and migration patterns of sea creatures.2 In 'Challenges facing implementation of the Precautionary Principle in Namibian marine phosphate mining regulation¿̐ư, a study is conducted relating to the regulation, management and sustainability of the marine ecosystem. In addition to the above, this dissertation will assess the implementation of the Benguela Current Convention (Benguela Convention) in practice with regard to the Atlantic Large Marine Ecosystem (ALME).3 Included in the study will be an assessment of environmental protection standards, procedural safeguards and decision-making processes by the Secretariat of the Commission, with reference to the Marine Spatial Planning Initiative (MSPI) paper and the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) report. This study is offered as an objective survey of some of the benefits that man can enjoy and some of the hazards that he must face in a responsible approach to the protection of the marine environment.

Download or read book Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises written by Erich Hoyt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of the widely praised Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises, published in 2005, led to numerous new marine protected area proposals and a number of notable conservation successes around the world. In this completely revised and expanded second edition, new developments in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific are described, as well as future directions for High Seas protection. New sections show how to design and manage MPAs in an ever noisier ocean subject to climate change, increased shipping and hydrocarbon exploration. The process of protected area creation for cetaceans has been accelerated and more than 200 exciting new places are detailed in this edition. This book provides a route map for MPA managers, as well as countries, to meet the ambitious targets for highly protected MPA networks by 2012 and 2020. This book is a key conservation tool and a springboard for worldwide change in human attitudes toward the world ocean where all life originated and where the majority of life on Earth still lives.

Book Synopsis Specially Protected Marine Areas in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by : Thomas Dux
Download or read book Specially Protected Marine Areas in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) written by Thomas Dux and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the question of what States are legally empowered to do under international law when they seek to protect certain areas of their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In this context, the regulation of shipping and other human activities under the Law of the Sea Convention and, in particular, the regime for special areas under Article 211(6) of the Convention are addressed. Global and regional instruments containing mechanisms to protect specific areas are discussed and relevant State practice is considered with a view to possible implications on customary international law. Finally, guidance is given as to what States can practically do to protect specific areas of their EEZ for environmental reason. (Series: Schriften zum See- und Hafenrecht - Vol. 18)
