Book Synopsis How To Break Bad News by : Robert Buckman
Download or read book How To Break Bad News written by Robert Buckman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1992-08-08 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many health care professionals and social service providers, the hardest part of the job is breaking bad news. The news may be about a condition that is life-threatening (such as cancer or AIDS), disabling (such as multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis), or embarrassing (such as genital herpes). To date medical education has done little to train practitioners in coping with such situations. With this guide Robert Buckman and Yvonne Kason provide help. Using plain, intelligible language they outline the basic principles of breaking bad new and present a technique, or protocol, that can be easily learned. It draws on listening and interviewing skills that consider such factors as how much the patient knows and/or wants to know; how to identify the patient's agenda and understanding, and how to respond to his or her feelings about the information. They also discuss reactions of family and friends and of other members of the health care team. Based on Buckman's award-winning training videos and Kason's courses on interviewing skills for medical students, this volume is an indispensable aid for doctors, nurses, psychotherapists, social workers, and all those in related fields.
Download or read book A Child in Pain written by Leora Kuttner and published by Crown House Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-05 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book is designed to help pediatric health professionals of all disciplines gain understanding and skill in how to approach and treat children's pain, and how to help children make sense of and deal with their own pain. Pain is the most common reason for children to seek a medical consultation - and sometimes a common reason for avoiding it. Unaddressed fears and anxiety complicate pain management and recovery. A central theme in this book is the examination of children's fears and anxieties that accompany their need for pain relief, and the communication skills and words that can help calm these fears. This book is addressed to all disciplines, in its valuing of the professional-patient relationship and in the language used to allay anxiety, address fears and promote relief and well-being. It is organized into three parts:Part I explores our scientific understanding of pain as a part of children's development. Part II explores pain treatments themselves, their efficacies and how to combine them for therapeutic impact. Part III uses this understanding to help translate knowledge into clinical practice in three domains of pediatric medicine: the physicians' practice, the dental practice, and in the hospital. This volume also includes contributions by Dr. Jonathan Kuttner, on the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of pain, Dr. Carl von Baeyer on pain assessment, and Drs Stefan Freidrichsdorf and Helen Karl on the pharmacological management of pain.Without doubt, this volume will stand as the "bible" on pediatric pain management for years to come.
Book Synopsis Personal Relationships During Adolescence by : Raymond Montemayor
Download or read book Personal Relationships During Adolescence written by Raymond Montemayor and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1994-04-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators will find much useful information in this book. It offers insights for program and curriculum planning and suggests numerous topics for stimulating discussions with teens. It also raises provocative issues about how the developmental needs of youth can be served more effectively by families, communities, and educators. The book holds the potential to define personal relations as an integrated line of study that serves to develop theory and research beyond contextual boundaries. The contributors analyze the ways in which critical interpersonal bonds are forged and maintained. The relationships discussed are: The parent-teen connection; the impact of cultural diversity on teens' social development; same-sex friends as well as opposite-sex friends during adolescence; heterosexual, bisexual, gay and lesbian romantic relationships; adolescent crowds (or cliques); and relationships involving non-kin adults. The authors also explore conceptual issues that cut across relationships and the problem of integrating the views of both individuals in a relationship.
Book Synopsis Age and Gender Considerations in Psychiatric Diagnosis by : William E. Narrow
Download or read book Age and Gender Considerations in Psychiatric Diagnosis written by William E. Narrow and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2008-05-20 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written to help identify major gaps in our knowledge of how gender and age affect psychiatric diagnoses and to stimulate much-needed research to fill these gaps, Age and Gender Considerations in Psychiatric Diagnosis serves as both a valuable short-term source for the DSM-V Task Force and its disorder-specific workgroups, and a long-term guide for future studies that will contribute to revised psychiatric classifications in these three areas. Here, 47 experts present findings in three areas of psychiatric research that historically have been neglected but rightfully have received increasing attention in recent years and thus are worthy of investigation into their clinical features, etiology, and course: 1. Significant gender differences in prevalence, symptom profiles, and risk factors for mental disorders, including neurodevelopmental, neurophysiological, and environmental factors for men and women that cut across diagnostic categories-for example, the critical importance of gender in how psychiatric illness develops and presents; DSM's approach to gender to date; and relevant research findings and gaps in the epidemiology, etiology, and pathophysiology of disorders and the gender-related expression of psychopathology, including the controversial and complex question of whether DSM should have different diagnostic criteria for men and women. 2. Mental disorders in infancy and early childhood, including diagnosis and measurement of psychopathology; PTSD and social and cognitive factors related to the experience of stress; reactive attachment disorder (unique in part because of its specificity to early childhood); mood and anxiety disorders and difficulties in diagnosis; sleep disorders, including two new disorders, Night-Waking Dysomnia and Sleep-Onset Dysomnia; feeding disorders, including the need to address overeating and overfeeding (especially given the alleged U.S. epidemic of obesity); early childhood manifestations of behavior disorders; and early symptoms and diagnosis of autism. 3. Mental disorders in the elderly, such as dementia and depression, once considered normal consequences of aging but now understood to represent mental disorders, including the need to identify specific brain structure abnormalities, biomarkers, and the many contributing biological, psychosocial, and environmental factors of mental illness in late life and to understand their roles in the elderly to better diagnose and monitor disease progression. Written for clinicians and researchers alike, this thought-provoking compendium contributes critical information that helps enhance our understanding of the causes of mental disorders, develop effective preventive and treatment interventions, and inform future editions of DSM and ICD.

Book Synopsis The Tenacity of the Couple-Norm by : Sasha Roseneil
Download or read book The Tenacity of the Couple-Norm written by Sasha Roseneil and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenacity of the Couple-Norm explores the ongoing strength and insidious grip of couple-normativity across changing landscapes of law, policy and everyday life in four contrasting national contexts: the UK, Bulgaria, Norway and Portugal. By investigating how the couple-norm is lived and experienced, how it has changed over time, and how it varies between places and social groups, this book provides a detailed analysis of changing intimate citizenship regimes in Europe, and makes a major intervention in understandings of the contemporary condition of personal life. The authors develop the feminist concept of ‘intimate citizenship’ and propose the new concept of ‘intimate citizenship regime’, offering a study of intimate citizenship regimes as normative systems that have been undergoing profound change in recent decades. Against the backdrop of processes of de-patriarchalization, liberalization, pluralization and homonormalization, the ongoing potency of the couple-norm becomes ever clearer.
