Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first of the ALZA CONFERENCE SERIES which will deal with a wide variety of topics of biomedical interest. These Conferences are planned to cover a range of subjects from the molecular level, such as drug receptor and drug membrane interactions, to the organ and organismal levels and the dynamics of drug therapy. This year's topic is "PROSTAGLANDINS." It is rapidly becoming clear that prosta glandins are of great interest and potential utility in therapeutics. An understanding of the role of prostaglandins in the regulation of cell processes should provide insight into the understanding of a variety of difficult and intransigent fields such as cancer, allergy, and transplant rejection. We hope that this Conference may focus attention on novel approaches to these areas. We wish to thank our distinguished Chairmen and guests for their attendance. The papers and dis cussions were prepared by Yvonne Hendrickson, using an ATS/360 Text-Editing System; we acknowledge with gratitude her skill, patience, and hard work. P.W.R. B.B.P.

Book Synopsis Prostaglandin Abstracts by : Richard M. Sparks
Download or read book Prostaglandin Abstracts written by Richard M. Sparks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains abstracts of most of the significant scientific literature dealing with prostaglandins published between 1906~when certain biologically active tissue extracts first stimulated the speculation of researchers~and 1970~when the use of prostaglandins for experimental control of fertility and induction of labor had been reported from six countries. Of the more than 4000 articles now identified which were published between 1906 and 1972, approximately half had appeared in print by the end of 1970. A second volume will cover the material printed in 1971 and 1972 with special emphasis on the role of prostaglandins in reproductive physiology. The reasons for publishing this considerable compilation of data are twofold. On the one hand, prosta· glandins, a family of fatty acid derivatives first identified in human semen, have been shown to have great and varied effects on all aspects of human physiology due to activity at the cellular level as mediators in the formation of cyclic AMP. The study of prostaglandins is considered today one of the most promising fields in the biological sciences. Secondly, as is now recognized, prostaglandins play an important role in reproduction, influencing both male and female fertility. It is hoped that this volume will make the results of early prostaglandin research available to investigators throughout the world, including especially those in developing coun· tries who may not have easy access to such material.
Book Synopsis Advances in the Biosciences by : Stig M. Bergström
Download or read book Advances in the Biosciences written by Stig M. Bergström and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 905 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the Biosciences 9 is a collection of presented papers on the International Conference on Prostaglandins, held in Vienna, Austria on September 25 to 28, 1972. The book consists of 114 chapters of various topics in the field of prostaglandins. The meeting touches on several main topics such as new active analogs of prostaglandins; effect of aspirin and indomethasin and other compounds relative to the study of the role of the prostaglandins in the living organism; and the evaluation of the various analytical methods for the determination of the extremely minute amounts of prostaglandin occurring in the living organism. Biologists, pharmacologists, endocrinologists, physicians, biochemists, and medical technologists will find the contents of this book invaluable.
Book Synopsis Prostaglandins: Chemical and Biochemical Aspects by : S. M. M. Karim

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second in a series of three books on advances in prostaglandin research. In recent years there has been an unparalleled interest in these compounds and as a result a vast amount of research data has accumulated since the publication of my earlier book in 1972. At that time it was possible to present a fairly comprehensive review of the various aspects of prosta glandin research in one volume. This is no longer possible and the contents are divided into three volumes; the first one dealing with prostaglandins and reproduction was published in October 1975; the present volume dealing with chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research, to be published in April 1976 and the third book dealing with physiological, pharmacological and pathological aspects of prostaglandin research wiII be published in May 1976. The authorship represents international scientists consisting of physiolo-. gists, pharmacologists, chemists, biochemists, veterinary scientists and obstetrician gynaecologists actively engaged in different areas of prosta glandin research. An attempt has been made to provide a total coverage of advances relating to prostaglandins. For the sake of completeness and continuity, material covered in the 1972 book is either briefly summarised or reference made to that edition. In recent years there have been notable advances in the chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research and these are discussed by various authorities in the chapters that follow.
Book Synopsis Prostaglandin Abstracts by : Ronald A. Shalita
Download or read book Prostaglandin Abstracts written by Ronald A. Shalita and published by Springer. This book was released on 1975-01-05 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prostagtandin Abstracts Volume II contains abstracts of the significant scientific Iiterature published in 1971, 1972, and 1973 on the role of prostaglandins in human reproduction. Of the more than 4000 articles which were published between 1971 and 1973 and deal with prostaglandins, endogenous and exogenous, in mal es and females, nearly 1100 involve human reproduction. Prostagtandin Abstracts, Volume I (Plenum Publishers, 1973) contains abstracts of all articles on prostaglandins published between 1906, when the action of these compounds was first noted, and 1970, when clinical research with these compounds was weil underway. Clinical use of prostaglandins during the 1960s proved safe but provided evidence of troublesome side effects. Du ring the 1970s, the development of new analogues, various protocols for international testing, and improved routes of administration indicates that prostaglandins still hold promise as a useful drug in the management of fertility. Research into potential contraceptive and other clinical uses of prostaglandins continues to be an exciting and expanding field of fundamental and clinical research. The citations and abstracts which are included in this volume have been selected and reproduced from POPINFORM, a computerized on-line information retrieval system which includes in its data base more than 25,000 documents on regulation of fertility. Also included as an Appendix is a bibliography (without abstracts) of 1971 -1973 material on aspects of prostaglandin research that do not involve reproduction. This bibliography was prepared by the Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan and is printed here with permission.

Book Synopsis Prostaglandins and Inflammation by : Rainsford
Download or read book Prostaglandins and Inflammation written by Rainsford and published by Springer. This book was released on 1979 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since prostaglandins were first proposed as mediators of in flammation some eight years ago, there have been a variety of arachidonic acid metabolites discovered including the thromboxa nes, prostacyclin, prostaglandin endoperoxides and lipoxygenase products such as SRS-A. All of them have subsequently been shown to have significant and specific biological activities not only in inflammatory responses but also in other physiological pro cesses. The explosion of research in this area has been an indi cation of the importance of this field but has also meant that it is time for an evaluation of activities of prostaglandins and products of the arachidonate pathway - collectively described as eicosanoids. For this reason the organizers of this conference felt it was timely to bring together workers in the field and critically evaluate some aspects of the role of different eico sanoids in inflammatory responses and the action of the anti inflammatory agents drugs used to modulate or inhibit these responses. The conference held at King's College Hospital Medical School produced lively and constructive discussions. While there are still many complexities to be investigated several important conclusions did emerge. The organizers were grateful to have the use of facilities at Normanby College and King's College Hospi tal. Also we would like to thank the Boots Company Ltd. , for generous sponsorship and Mrs. P.
