Book excerpt: Measurements of differential cross sections are presented for the production of a Z boson and at least one hadronic jet in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 inverse femtobarns. The jet multiplicity distribution is measured for up to six jets. The differential cross sections are measured as a function of jet transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for the four highest transverse momentum jets. The distribution of the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta is also measured as a function of the jet multiplicity. The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions at leading and next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD.

Book excerpt: Measurements of jet production rates in association with W and Z bosons for jet transverse momenta above 30 GeV are reported, using a sample of proton-proton collision events recorded by CMS at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. The study includes the measurement of the normalized inclusive rates of jets sigma(V +>= n jets)/sigma(V), where V represents either a W or a Z. In addition, the ratio of W to Z cross sections and the W charge asymmetry as a function of the number of associated jets are measured. A test of Berends--Giele scaling at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is also presented. The measurements provide a stringent test of perturbative-QCD calculations and are sensitive to the possible presence of new physics. The results are in agreement with the predictions of a simulation that uses explicit matrix element calculations for final states with jets.

Book excerpt: We present a study of events with Z bosons and jets produced at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in p{bar p} collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data sample consists of nearly 14,000 Z/[gamma]* 2!ee− candidates corresponding to the integrated luminosity of 340 pb−1 collected using the D0 detector. Ratios of the Z/[gamma]* + d"n jet cross sections to the total inclusive Z/[gamma]* cross section have been measured for n = 1 to 4 jet events. Our measurements are found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order QCD calculation and with a tree-level QCD prediction with parton shower simulation and hadronization.

With an integrated luminosity of 4.6fb-1, this data set allows for an exploration of a large kinematic range, including jet production up to a transverse momentum of 1TeV and multiplicities up to seven associated jets. The production cross sections for W bosons are measured in both the electron and muon decay channels. Differential cross sections for many observables are also presented including measurements of the jet observables such as the rapidities and the transverse momenta as well as measurements of event observables such as the scalar sums of the transverse momenta of the jets. As a result, the measurements are compared to numerous QCD predictions including next-to-leading-order perturbative calculations, resummation calculations and Monte Carlo generators.

In each jet multiplicity sample the differential and cumulative cross sections with respect to the transverse energy of the n{sup th}-leading jet are measured. For W + {ge} 2 jets the differential cross section with respect to the 2-leading jets invariant mass m{sub j{sub 1}j{sub 2}} and angular separation {Delta}R{sub j{sub 1}j{sub 2}} is also reported. The data are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo simulations.

Inclusive and differential Z/[gamma]∗(→ e+e−)+jets cross sections are measured for jets with a transversemomentum pT(jet) > 30 GeV and rapidity |y(jet)| 4.4. Z boson candidates are identified by their decay into electron pairs. In order to stringently probe the modelling of Z/[gamma]∗+jets production by Monte Carlo generators in regions of high-pT phase space typical for Higgs boson decay and searches for new physics, events with high-pT final states are investigated. High-pT final states are defined as events with either pT(Z) 300 GeV or pT(leading jet) > 300 GeV. A set of four observables, sensitive to the topology of the event, are measured for the standard event selection as well as in the regions of high-pT phase space. The results from data are unfolded to particle level and compared to calculations of the matrix element from Monte Carlo generators Alpgen+Pythia and Sherpa interfaced to a parton shower. The results show that Sherpa tends to model Z/[gamma]∗+jets production in high-pT regions of phase space much better than Alpgen+Pythia." --

Book excerpt: The Standard Model is the current theory used to describe the elementary particles and their fundamental interactions (except the gravity). My PhD within the ATLAS experiment put this model under test using objects called jets, to study final state particles that interact through the strong force. First, I contributed to a method of jet calibration aiming at calibrating the energy scale of jets in the forward region of the detector with respect to central region. I improved the calibration by making it faster and more precise. Next, I worked on a search analysis of new physics using events with two jets. The Standard Model predicts a smooth distribution of the invariant mass of di-jets, hence we search for a bump which could come from a new particle. Since no significant bump is found, we put limits on signals as predicted by Beyond Standard Model theories and on model-independent signals. Last, I developed a new physics analysis measuring the leading (highest in transverse momentum) jet differential cross-section as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The challenge was to factorize the detector effects (resolution and acceptance) from the observable, which I did using a new unfolding technique. I also worked on the theoretical predictions calculation which was very challenging to perform and needed the implementation of special regularizations. The measurement and the predictions are then compared and tensions are observed due to the difficulties of theoretical predictions calculation.

Book excerpt: We report the production jet cross-sections and properties in W and Z events using data from collisions with √s = 1800 GeV at Fermilab Tevatron. Observed distributions in general agree with predictions of leading order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiations and simulated parton fragmentations; however, some limitations of LO QCD predictions are also observed. The cross-section ratio of W + ≥ 1 jet events to inclusive W events is reported and compared with next-to-the-leading order QCD expectations. Good agreement between data and theory is seen. The color coherence effects are also observed in W+ jets events.

The measurements are made using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb−1 collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, and achieve considerably smaller uncertainties on W+jets production cross sections than previous measurements. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations in the n = 1-3 jet multiplicity bins and to leading order pQCD calculations in the 4-jet bin. The measurements are generally in agreement with pQCD predictions, although certain regions of phase space are identified where the calculations could be improved.
