This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the United Nations, the world’s population will grow by 2 billion people over the coming decades to reach 9.7 billion by 2050 (UNDESA-DP 2019a). The dignity and life prospects of those additional 2 billion people will depend on their ability to meet basic needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter, and their access to adequate employment. The most pressing need for jobs will be felt in those regions and countries that have not yet gone through the demographic transition, and where the cohort of young people is growing rapidly. The challenge will be compounded by an increasingly crowded, more competitive world with fewer natural resources per capita, and by the threat of climate change, which is projected to affect every sector of the economy (Arent 2014).

Book excerpt: "This analysis examines the dynamics of youth employment in agriculture and the agri-food system in Tanzania and Malawi. The study finds that when extending the definition of a farmer beyond household heads, the average age of 'farmers' is 34 years in Tanzania and 31 years in Malawi. With 59 and 56 per cent of rural youth consistently engaging in farming, juxtaposed against high turnover into and out of the sector, it is likely that poor economic prospects outside farming are driving strong youth participation. To increase rural agricultural youth employment, it is recommended that countries promote opportunities in the agri-food system."--

Book Synopsis Youth and jobs in rural Africa: Beyond stylized facts: Synopsis by : Mueller, Valerie
Download or read book Youth and jobs in rural Africa: Beyond stylized facts: Synopsis written by Mueller, Valerie and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rural population in Africa south of the Sahara is growing, and its rural economy is still underdeveloped. The pressure to create jobs in rural areas is therefore particularly acute. There is cause for optimism, however. Evidence suggests that agriculture is transforming in many African countries, albeit slowly, and that youth are often participating in this process. Further research is needed to accelerate this progress.

Download or read book Rural youth and employment in Ethiopia written by Schmidt, Emily and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines labor diversification in Ethiopia, focusing on youth, and explores current conditions that youth face in both the agricultural and non-farm labor markets. Using data from the Ethiopia Socioeconomic Survey (ESS) and the National Labor Force Survey (NLFS), we explore current trends in labor diversification, along with youth non-farm engagement in rural and small towns. We find that youth (ages 25 to 34 years) have a greater probability of working in non-farm enterprises compared to mature individuals (age 35-64). However, wage labor opportunities remain scant in rural Ethiopia. The majority of individuals working in non-farm employment are engaged in small-scale trade activities.

Book Synopsis Agricultural finance and the youth: prospects for financial inclusion in Kenya by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

This book was released on 2020-12-13 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this publication is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the current state of financial inclusion among the Kenyan youth, especially those residing in rural and financially underserved areas. In particular, the study seeks to illustrate the clear linkage between the substantial financial access gap faced nowadays by the Kenyan youth and their inability to pursue high value-added entrepreneurial opportunities, chiefly in the agribusiness sector. The study sets out to analyze the core constraints and opportunities associated with the provision of tailored financial services to young Kenyans (especially first-time entrepreneurs), while showcasing the essential role that key supporting actors (such as the government, international development institutions, NGOs, foundations and many others) can play in fostering the provision and uptake of such services.

Book Synopsis Tackling Youth Unemployment by : Francesca Fazio
Download or read book Tackling Youth Unemployment written by Francesca Fazio and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth have always had higher unemployment rates – about twice or more than the average – as they are usually the last to be hired in an expansion and the first to be let go in a recession. In addition, young people engage in extensive job searching in their early years, and this can imply considerable job churning as both youth and employers look for a good match. This highlights the importance of facilitating the school-to-work transition and having early interventions to assist such youth before negative conditions set in. It also highlights the potential importance of determining those young people most “at risk” of long-term unemployment, and of targeting or streaming them into programmes that will yield the largest incremental net benefits given their characteristics. Unemployed youth without previous work experience often are not eligible for unemployment insurance benefits when they first enter the labour market. When they do receive job search assistance, they often face a bewildering array of programmes that are available to assist them, often with little guidance to help them select the programs that best meet their needs. Consequently, ensuring that today’s youth do not become a “lost generation” is an urgent matter. George Bernard Shaw once said that it is too bad that “youth is wasted on the young”, implying that youth do not realize the opportunities they have as youth and only see them as they get older. There is a danger, however, that many of today’s youth may be never have those opportunities and hence not even see them with hindsight. This book and others in the ADAPT Labour Studies Book-Series are intended to deal with these challenges, to make sure that youth is not wasted on the young.
Book Synopsis Youth Employment Programs in Ghana by : Christabel Dadzie
Download or read book Youth Employment Programs in Ghana written by Christabel Dadzie and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unemployment and underemployment are global development challenges. The situation in Ghana is no different. In 2016, it was projected that, given the country’s growing youth population, 300,000 new jobs would need to be created each year to absorb the increasing numbers of unemployed young people. Yet the employment structure of the Ghanaian economy has not changed much from several decades ago. Most jobs are low skill, requiring limited cognitive or technology know-how, reflected in low earnings and work of lower quality. An additional challenge for Ghana is the need to create access to an adequate number of high-quality, productive jobs. This report seeks to increase knowledge about Ghana’s job landscape and youth employment programs to assist policy makers and key stakeholders in identifying ways to improve the effectiveness of these programs and strengthen coordination among major stakeholders. Focused, strategic, short- to medium-term and long-term responses are required to address current unemployment and underemployment challenges. Effective coordination and synergies among youth employment programs are needed to avoid duplication of effort while the country’s economic structure transforms. Effective private sector participation in skills development and employment programs is recommended. The report posits interventions in five priority areas that are not new but could potentially make an impact through scaling up: (1) agriculture and agribusiness, (2) apprenticeship (skills training), (3) entrepreneurship, (4) high-yielding areas (renewable energy†“solar, construction, tourism, sports, and green jobs), and (5) preemployment support services. Finally, with the fast-changing nature of work due to technology and artificial intelligence, Ghana needs to develop an education and training system that is versatile and helps young people to adapt and thrive in the twenty-first century world of work.
